Another Met game attending by moi, another win. Time to get season tix! The B-Mets were rained out, but other than that it was victory all around. Let’s take a look!
Buffalo 2, Columbus 1
Matt Tuiasasopo singled in Fred Lewis with the go ahead run, and then Val Pascucci scored on a groundout for insurance to give the Herd the win. Pedro Beato got the win in relief, going a scoreless inning. Matt Harvey started for Buffalo and had a pretty solid outing. In six innings, he gave up only one run on three hits and five strikeouts. The only blemish was the three walks he issued. That’s 26 in 59 innings. It would be nice to see that tick down a bit in the coming weeks.
St. Lucie 9, Palm Beach 1
Cory Mazzoni may be destined for the bullpen, but damn! Mazzoni stymied the Cardinals over seven innings, allowing a run on three hits and a walk against six strikeouts. His ERA for the year is now 3.10. Kyle Allen and Ryan Fraser each chucked a scoreless innings to close it out. Fortunately for the hurlers, the offense put this away early, so they could relax. Wilmer Flores was 3 for 4 with a two run homer, three RBI, and two runs scored, and former Cyclone teammates Cory Vaughn ((3 RBI) and Darrel Ceciliani (1 RBI, 2 runs) both went 3 for 5.
Savannah 12, Greenville 2
TJ Rivera (2 run), Charlie Thurber (3 run) and Travis Taijeron (3 run) all homered in the Sand Gnats nineteen (!) hit barrage. 1B Cole Frenzel was the lone starter without a hit. The pitching left a little to be desired, however, as evidenced by the thirteen (!) hits allowed. Domingo Tapia started and struggled a bit. He only gave up a run in four innings, but surrendered seven hits and three walk sin the process. That’ll get you out of a game early. Marcos Camarena got the win in relief, going two innings and allowing one run.

Yeah Harvey is getting the job done but those walks are not a good sign. Then again he has time to work on his comand.

really nice to see Flores putting up overall big numebrs to go along with his usual projection on tools + being young schtick.
He needs to be bumped up to AA at the break, after this much time in A+.

True he has been there long enough but the kid is still a kid. Glad to see him attempting to reclaim his perch as a top prospect.

moving him up to AA will create the interesting dynamic of what to do with him, since AA is that magical place where a good prospect can suddenly become a guy ready to call up.
and the real intriguing part is, they have an incumbent pending FA (after 2013) at his new position.
look at these #s:
age 20:
A+ 15/75, .270..369/.459/.828 (466 ABs)
A+ 9/32, .317/.358/.511/.869 (180 ABs)
Age 21:
AA/AAA .341/.441/.605/1.046 (and a trip to the majors).
???
Yes, the first guy is Wright, and the 2nd guy is Wilmer. Just interesting to compare the same level/age. Now, say Wilmer keeps this up, and goes to AA mid-year and holds is own, then starts 2013 in Bingo and just goes hog wild (like Wright did).
If you haven’t already extended DW, do you make a different decision? Pull a Phils like when they dumped Thome to make room for Howard? Figure out another position switch to get them both in?
Of course, a bit premature until Wilmer gets up to AA and dominates, but he will be there this season, so it could happen by next year.
Dang, should have made this a post of it’s own, then sent the link to the core…

Can Wilmer play OF or 1B?

1B maybe, but it would take some time in the minors for him to learn it. OF is doubtful. If he does move to AA mid-season it’ll be interesting to see how they handle playing time between him and Marte at 3B, because both need reps on defense as well as offense. Marte has played a little 1B, but not much.

I can’t imagine he couldn’t butcher the OF as well as Duda.

I guess they just make do, with Wilmer playing primary 3B, some DH, with Marte getting 1B and DH time too.
not sure what is going on at AAA at the moment, though marte is probably too raw for that now.
My guess, they keep Wilmer as the main 3B, and once (if?) wright gets extended, they make the call on a position switch for him. Or he just becomes trade bait.

what really surprised me is when I looked up the numbers, and saw the huge jump that Wright made in his age 21 season. not that he was bad before that, but we are talking about quantum leap here.
no way I would have looked at his PSL stats and said that kid is going to rocket up to start in the majors next year.
Actually, not that I want to dredge out the old Miggy comparison, but he did the same thing, just 1 year younger (not sure about B’days, they may have been at the same stage).
age 19 in A+ 9/75, .274/.333/.421/.754
age 20 in AA 10/59, .365/.429/.609/1.038 (266 Abs then up to MLB)
again, a huge leap at that level and basically the same age, and no chance you looked at a 19 YO with a .754 OPS in A+ ball, and said that the next year he would finish 27th in MVP voting (and ROY -5 only playing 1/2 a season).

Stick I’m sure you can go down the line and matchup a given years mediocre minor league stats followed by a subsequent years successful stats for a given minor league player and then show that it compares favorably to a player that has excelled in the majors. Its quite a leap of faith to suppose that Flores keeps this up. At this stage it’s pure fantasy.

Those Gnats bats exploded last night Rivera & Taijeron had huge games.
