Michael Fulmer is the scheduled starter for Savannah.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Thx Bryan.

  2. TRS86

Very nice start for Young. 5 shutout innings with only one hit given up so far. Decently tidy on the pitches too. 71 through 5 isn’t shabby.

    1. TRS86

6 innings so far 2 hits, 87 pitches.

      1. srt

        Nice.

I just got back home and saw this post. Clicked on the Bison game. Thanks for the update so far.

And thanks for posting these links, MrNJ.

        Oh, Josh Thole up…..

        1. TRS86

Well Chuck James ruined that. Oh well. Beato in now.

    2. Stick

So, young up for the next start, with Hefner to the pen, and schwinden down?

      1. Bryan

I think the plan is for one more AAA start, although that could change. He has an opt out for tomorrow, but I doubt he takes it b/c he’s obviously going to join the Mets rotation when he’s ready. Schwinden should be gone ASAP, but at this point you have to account for Hefner and Batista moving forward in addition to Young.

        1. TRS86

Really they could just DFA Schwinny and bring him on up.

          1. Stick

I am thinking that Schwinny just might get DFA’d. also claimed though, so maybe they lop off Satin instead? But ultimately they both likely go.

          2. Bryan

Adam Rubin is reporting that Elvin Ramirez in addition to Thole will be brought up tomorrow. So somebody is getting DFA. Could be Schwinden or Egbert.

          3. srt

Glad to hear Thole is on his way back.

If we’re bringing Thole up, which catcher goes down?
            I’m thinking Nickeas stays.

Looking forward to getting a look at Elvin Ramirez.

          4. Stick

they seem to have reached the point of produce, stay. so I hope that means Nickeas goes down.

          5. Prismo

Which catcher gets sent down is a big story that I’m surprised more aren’t talking about (GKR mentioned it briefly the other night).

Because Thole’s coming back from a concussion, the backup could still play in a few games a week, at least for awhile.

            Rob Johnson (35 PA): .313 .371 .344
            Mike Nickeas (70 PA): .148 .235 .230

I think their fielding has been similarly average. So what’s the real question here? Does Nickeas get the job simply because he had it to start the season?

I’ll say this – Rob Johnson won’t finish the season hitting .313 if he stays up, no way. It’ll be .250 if he’s LUCKY. But, Nickeas could definitely continue to stink in a historic way and surprise no one doing so.

One factor may be – I don’t know if Nickeas has options or not, I think he may have to accept going back to AAA. Given his stats, he SHOULD. But that could factor into the decision.

Ideally Johnson stays up, and if he falls off the side of the earth, maybe you bring Nickeas back up. Maybe.

          6. Stick

the options situations on some of these guys of course is a big consideration, I just don’t know what they are.

as long as they don’t mind keeping someone on the 40 man, sedning them down is fine with the option. But some of these guys are not going to clear waivers.

          7. Stick

also, not knowing how much Thole can catch is a big reason to keep Rotino around.

          8. Prismo

Right on Stick, no issue with sending down Nickeas as long as he’s on the 40 man.

          9. srt

GKR were talking about this a bit last night during the game. They did say one consideration is RA Dickey. Apparently, Johnson has caught him some in ST and I thought they said in the minors.

Agree – I’ll be very surprised if Johnson does stay, that he continues hitting at the clip his small sample size up here . But I’ll be happy if he does.

If I may change the subject for a moment this was just too weird to pass up. The only explanation I can offer outside of heat stroke, temporary insanity, his body inhabited by an Ancient Alien or a change in dining habits would be he was a Dolphins, Heat or Marlins fan. Being a Dolphins fan in itself would be sufficient as most Dolphins fans are known to behave in this manor (It’s hard to tell if Marlins fans behave this way due to small sample size.)

    From AOL.com:
“A newly released surveillance video from atop a Miami Herald parking garage shows the entire violent attack Saturday during which a naked man chewed off most of a homeless victim’s face.
The video, uncensored though partially obscured and from a distance, shows 31-year-old Rudy Eugene in the last moments of his life: striking Ronald Poppo, 65, removing Poppo’s pants, and brutalizing his face in broad daylight for nearly 18 minutes as traffic rolled past on the busy MacArthur Causeway.
Eugene was shot and killed by Miami Police officer Jose Rivera as he loomed over Poppo’s bleeding body, but the video helps piece together the moments leading up to the gruesome attack and suggests the two men met by chance on the MacArthur’s Biscayne Boulevard off-ramp, in the shadow of the Miami Metromover.
CBSMiami reports in a timeline of his last hours that Eugene, who spent Friday night with a girlfriend in Miami Gardens, drove to South Beach Saturday morning to check out Memorial Day weekend festivities and was unable to start his car to make a return trip. Abandoning his purple sedan, which was later towed, police say he at some point set off on foot across the causeway:
It was a hot day, with temperatures in the 90′s, and a long walk. Either late that morning, or early that afternoon, police sources said, Eugene began his trek back to Miami. As he walked across the causeway, they said he started stripping, leaving his clothes on the walkway and in the road.
Cops found his drivers license and clothes strewn from the beach to the mainland.
Footage released by the Herald picks up a fully naked Eugene just before 2 p.m. as he walked down the exit ramp on the other side of the bridge. Pausing in a shady spot, he reels or spins slightly as a bicyclist whizzes by, then is mostly lost to sight as he bends over the homeless Poppo where he sat or lay on the ground.
About two minutes, later, however, Eugene rolls Poppo into the middle of the sidewalk. He appears to strip away some of the older man’s clothing and then savage his face as Poppo futilely resists. Several minutes later, Eugene again drags Poppo farther down the sidewalk and continues to attack him before another cyclist rolls slowly by and a white car pauses on the off-ramp, just on the other side of a short wall separating the roadway from the bike path.
Gruesome photos circulating the web would later confirm most of Poppo’s face, including his nose, eyes, and mouth, was ripped away, in what Miami’s Fraternal Order of Police vice president Sgt. Javier Ortiz told the Associated Press was of the “goriest scenes I’ve ever been to.” Poppo remains in critical condition.
“He had his face eaten down to his goatee. The forehead was just bone. No nose, no mouth,” said Sgt. Armando Aguilar, Miami FOP president. “In my opinion, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The Herald reports at least five passersby called police:
According to Miami police, the first call of a disturbance came from a passing motorist who reported seeing Eugene stripping off his clothes and acting erratically. That call was routed to the Florida Highway Patrol — it’s unclear why — and then transferred to the Miami police. Police have not disclosed the time of the first call.
A Road Ranger called to the scene also called 911 and used a loudspeaker to call for the naked attacker to cease. As the attack dragged on, two other motorists called police, as did another cyclist, Larry Vega, who later told reporters that Eugene “just stood, his head up like that, with pieces of flesh in his mouth. And he growled.”
The surveillance video shows at least two more cyclists pass before Officer Rivera drives up the off-ramp, about 18 minutes into the attack. Rivera can be seen approaching the scene at a normal pace before pulling his gun and quickly stepping into a shooting stance. Vega later told news outlets that when Rivera yelled at Eugene to back away, the naked man merely raised his head “with pieces of flesh in his mouth,” growled, and began chewing again.
Rivera reportedly then shot Eugene once, but Eugene still continued to attack Poppo’s face, prompting the officer to shoot multiple times until he was dead.
“The guy, he was like a zombie, blood dripping, it was intense,” the New York Daily News quotes Vega as saying. “The closest thing I’ve seen to it? ‘The Walking Dead’.”
Though police theorize Eugene was prompted to attack Poppo by drug-induced psychosis — possibly caused by a new drug called “bath salts” — the Herald reports no drugs or paraphernalia were found at the scene. Toxicology reports are expected to take several weeks. “

      all righty then…

    2. srt

Heard something about this yesterday. Avoided trying to hear more about it. After reading this, I know why…
      Just too creepy.

    3. NJstuckinTX

When Huey Lewis said he wanted a new drug, I don’t think zombie induced psychosis with a side of blood lust was what he had in mind.

  4. oleosmirf

game is on MLB network as well. Nice to Young looking like he did last season. One more start in AAA?

    1. Stick

well, hefner looked good enough to not push it if they aren’t sure young is ready. or, they could just skip his turn if they want to (since there is an off day), and just run out Gee on normal rest.

  5. NJstuckinTX

Cubs are selling everyone but Jeff Samardzjia. So, would the Mets or Cubs be interested in Tejada, Mejia and Valdespin for Starlin? I’m not saying that is the proper trade value, but something along those lines. Just food for thought on a lazy afternoon.

    1. Prismo

I think I saw that the Cubs said Starlin was NOT on the block.

      1. NJstuckinTX

        This is what MLBTR had:

“Starlin Castro could be obtained for two impact prospects, according to Nightengale. First baseman Bryan LaHair and starters Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster could also be acquired. The Cubs will contribute cash in a deal involving Alfonso Soriano, who earns $18MM per season through 2014.”

  6. Mr North Jersey

Item of note. Listening to BMets game and the BMets announcer mentioned during the 1st inning tonight that Wheeler has a different change-up grip he has been using his last 4 or 5 starts which he credits to Mets pitching coordinator Ron Romanick.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Wheeler is simply Dominating tonight. He has faced 1 more than the minimum through 5 innings which was a single. He has 6 K’s through 5 no walks and out of 63 pitches he has thrown 48 of them for strikes. That is 76% of his pitches so far for strikes.

  7. Mr North Jersey

Since the 5th Wheeler cruised retiring every hitter he faced until the 7th where Wheeler gave up a 1 out double off the wall that just missed being a HR. It was followed with a single that dropped into LF for a basehit and ending the shutout. He then got a strikeout and a long flyball to end the 7th.

He is at 90 pitches 68 for strikes. Don’t know if he will come out for the 8th.

    1. srt

      Very nice.

    2. Stick

I’m becoming convinced that he is going to be in the Met rotation at the beginning of next year, purely from earning it.

  8. gategem

NJ thanks for making the radio links available to us and giving us the updates on Wheeler.

Many years ago the NY Giants had a fullback by the name of Ernie Wheelwright. His nickname was “wheels.” That was appropriate for a running back but I’m not sure it would be a good nickname for Wheeler.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Your welcome Gategem.
