Last Night on the Farm – 6/4/12

Aside from a couple of future farmhands joining the fray, there wasn’t a whole lot of action last night.  Jenrry Mejia and Pedro Beato were both very sharp, the Lucies suffered a rare loss, and the B-Mets played an inning and a half.

Buffalo 2, Toledo 1

This is the Jenrry Mejia we’d all like to see.  Throwing 72 pitches, Mejia lasted 5.1 shutout innings, giving up 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3.  Pedro Beato pitched the final 3.1 innings (doing so with just 29 pitches, 21 of which were strikes) allowing no hits or walks and striking out 1.  Ruben Tejada began his rehab assignment and went 0 for 3 while playing 5 innings at shortstop.  He should be back in the big leagues Friday night when the Mets play in the Bronx.

Binghamton 2, Akron 2 Game Suspended

The two teams got started at 10:30 in the morning, continuing their game from Sunday, but they only made it to the top of the 6th before more rain forced another suspension.  The game will be concluded later this month when the B-Mets travel to Akron.  The teams will also makeup Monday’s scheduled game during that trip to Akron with the B-Mets playing as the “home team”.

Tampa 2, St. Lucie 1

The Lucies couldn’t quite complete the 4-game sweep of the hated Yankees.  Chase Huchingson started and gave up 1 run over 5 innings while striking out 4.  Jack Leathersich gave up 2 hits and a walk while striking out 6 in 2.2 innings.  Adam Kolarek pitched a shutout inning but allowed a runner inherited from Taylor Whitenton to score the winning run.  Singles from Wilfredo Tovar, Cory Vaughn, Blake Forsythe, and ZeErika McQueen is all the offense the Lucies could muster.  Jason Bay was sick and did not play, so he will not be activated today as expected.

Savannah was off yesterday, but today they open up a 3-game series with division leaderin Ashville, who they trail by 6.5 games in the standings.  It’s essentially a must-sweep series for the Gnats if they’re going to make a run at the first half title.  Domingo Tapia is tonight’s scheduled starter.

I love to see reports every day of multiple guys pitching well. Can never have too many pitchers!

And Bay, dodged a bullet there Met fans! Maybe Ike gave him Valley Fever? I actually think he is going to really screw up the team when he gets back. Production (another clog in the lineup), chemistry, viibe, you name it and he will sugar it’s gas tank!

And I can’t believe they are really going to let him start vs. RHP too on a regular basis. That steams my clams.

Hopefully he has about as long a leash as DJ did. 1-2 games of looking like a RH Ike vs. RHP and platoon city.

of course, they can not call it a platoon. Just Terry giving him selected rest days to keep him healthy. Just coincidentally always when a RH starter is going.

I’m glad to see that you are ambivalent about Bay returning. :-)

I like to keep an open mind about things.

Mejia and Beato pitching well. Tejada on the mend… We may actually have a real Major league team soon enough!

Bayonne ripping me in the shoutbox. I feel like I’ve done my duty for the day. :-)

And I’d still trade Tejada + pitching away for Starlin Castro. In a heartbeat.

Why has he been obsessed with you lately? Have you been engaging with him?

      1. NJstuckinTX

I did ask if he hit his head on the rafters in his basement.

My next question will be if he can get me a pirated copy of “Live in Pompeii” for cheap.

That sounds so dirty LOL. You have to remember that Bay is Bipolar so it doesn’t really take much.

        1. SaltyGary

I know but you or even I are a more sensible target. Just think its real funny that he keeps bringing him out out of the blue.

I saw that. All because some talking head on the MLB network said something about Castro making a HS level mistake. Still a hell of a talent. And why Ruben is a nice player, lets not get carried away and anoint him Ernie Banks.

I loved that he told you to stay in Texas though.

and of course, he is the guy that staked his “reputation” that Murphy would never play a game at 2B for the Mets or survive if he did. And that Ike was a lock for 35 HRs and was a total beast. So take it from the source.

Yeah, that cracked me up. Sometimes I wish I could glimpse into the pandora’s box o’ his brain, just to see how rusty the wheels are in there.

Question: why did Beato pitch so many innings?

    1. TRS86

      Building arm strength.

    2. Stickguy

he only threw about 21 (or 29?) pitches. Had to go that long to get some work in!

      1. TRS86

Yeah, lets remember that at one point they were discussing stretching him out to be a starter so maybe they are even entertaining the idea of him being the long-man. Besides, one of the things in recovery for a reliever is multiple innings or back to back days.

      2. Bryan

It was 29 pitches, 21 of which were strikes, and really he could easily throw more than that in just 2 innings in the big leagues, which is something he’ll probably be asked to do at some point.
