It’s not often that I say “interesting article by Jayson Stark” but today I do. Stark has an article that talks about how had the Umpires’ Union approved an expanded form of instant replay (that is still in plans) Santana may have never pitched a no-hitter. – Link

get over it already people. the umpire making judgment calls on close balls like that is part of BB. If he says it is foul, it is foul. A huge # of no-hitters and other key games turned on an umpire (and sometimes an official scorer’s) call or non-call.
Just before the days of Modell’s instant super slo-mo cameras, you couldn’t dissect them as well!
and frankly, if you want to start having instant replay on anything close, the games will take forever, and the pitchers will be really pissed getting iced int he middle of an inning for 5 minutes at a time!

Just remember this has already been approved by the owners and the players. It’s getting the umpires on board that remains so odds are this will be part of the future. Will it be for better or worse is what remains to be seen.
Though it’s hard to argue that had it been in place this season we would of still witnessed the Mets 1st no-hitter.
