Last night on the farm there was plenty of good pitching, as 3 of the 4 Mets affiliates won after surrendering just 1 run each. Let’s get to it:
Buffalo 5, Columbus 1
Definitely a much better game for Herd than the previous night, thanks in large part to Jeurys Familia. Familia pitched 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. In his last 2 starts Familia has pitched 11.2 innings and struck out 10 while walking just 3. At the plate Brad Emaus and Fred Lewis led the way with 3 hits each. Emaus hit his 3rd homer of the year.
Harrisburg 4, Binghamton 3
Collin McHugh didn’t exactly make his best start of the year, giving up 4 runs in 6.2 innings, while striking out 5. In the loss Adrian Rosario pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Matt Den Dekker and Josh Rodriguez both had 3 hits and were a homer shy of the cycle. Jefrey Marte was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Reese Havens had his 4th hit in the last 5 games, which is progress. Juan Centeno was 2 for 3 with a double. All the B-Mets in the lineup except McHugh had at least 1 hit.
St. Lucie 3, Clearwater 1
Yohan Almonte pitched 7 shutout innings to improve his record to 6-0 on the season. Adam Kolarek gave up a run but struck out 3 in a 2-inning save. Expect Kolarek to move up to Binghamton after his appearance in the FSL all-star game, if not sooner. Just 4 hits for the Lucies, but that would be all they needed. Alonzo Harris homered for the second straight game. Francisco Pena and Richard Lucas also drove in runs.
Savannah 8, Asheville 1
Logan Verrett made his 4th start of the year after sitting out the last 6 weeks with an injury and he pitched 6.1 strong innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 4. Marcos Camarena and Jeffrey Walters, both of who have sub 2 ERA’s, combined for 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings and 4 strikeouts. Even with Travis Taijeron and Aderlin Rodriguez going hitless the Gnats managed to score 8 runs. T.J. Rivera led the way offensively again, going 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s. Dustin Lawley also had 3 hits. Brian Harrison, Charley Thurber, and Greg Pron all had 2 hits each.

Bryan. Thanks for the recaps. Always a good read. I know it was kicked around yesterday on the 40 man management. Who is coming up that needs to be added next year?

Do you mean guys that need to be added to the 40 to be protected from the rule 5 draft? For next year it would essentially be any college player drafted in 2009 or earlier and any high school player drafted in 2008 or earlier. There’s plenty of guys, but the ones who would realistically be taken and may need protecting are Darin Gorski, Collin McHugh, Adrian Rosario, Jefry Marte, Juan Centeno, and possibly Armando Rodriguez.
They added 7 last year, so it likely won’t be that many, but throw in the likelihood of Harvey, Edgin, or Den Dekker coming up before the end of the season and taking up a spot as well.

Uff Da…
This team really needs to either trade some upper level players for another teams lower level prospects, package a couple of the prospects for BP help, or plan on losing a couple of these guys in the next rule 5.
And thanks for the info.

Well, we don’t know what the roster will look like by season’s end, and there will be some spots opened up after the season by free agents like Rauch, Cedeno, etc and guys that will probably be DFA at season’s end if not during the season like Rottino, Johnson, etc. And who knows, if guys like Parnell, Beato, Mejia, Elvin Ramirez, Rosario, Edgin, McHugh could all be potential bullpen guys next year and you won’t have to go out and sign guys like Batista or Rauch or Acosta or Byrdak.

True enough. There is also a great deal of non-major league ready players on that 40 man as well.

Yes, and that’s really the biggest problem they have, not that it’s a bad problem, but Flores and Puello especially are on the 40 and they have huge upsides but they’re years away, especially Puello; if Flores moves to AA soon and does well, we’ll see. Also Carson, Familia, and Lagares may not be ML contributors til at least next year, and who knows with Havens.

Regarding who needs to be protected on the 40 man come next year…..
Thanks to your excellent minors coverage here Bryan I actually know who these guys are that you’ve listed!

Better outing for Familia, especially only giving up the 2 walks.

Agreed. Also the Rosario kid in his early showing in AA has pitched well.

I also really like Rosario, but as I mentioned earlier he’s rule 5 eligible after this year. He was actually picked in rule 5 two years ago when the Orioles took him from the Brewers, but eventually returned him, so I’d be willing to bet he’s chosen again if he’s not protected. Hopefully he can get some AAA time before the end of the season.

Keith Law just took each teams first round pick this year and ranked it in their system:
New York Mets: Gavin Cecchini
Matt Harvey’s been good-not-great in AAA, and Zack Wheeler’s clearly still No. 1 in the system; I’d rank Cecchini third, over last year’s first-rounder Brandon Nimmo as well as Jeurys Familia, who I still think ends up a reliever in the majors.

Cecchini third? Well, that was quick. Did the kid even sign yet with the Mets? If so, I must have missed that.

I don’t believe he has yet.

From that link I see that the signing deadline is 07/13, isn’t that less of a window in the past? Nimmo signed in mid-August and I think he was a deadline signing.

Yes, that’s part of the new CBA and new draft rules. The signing deadline has been moved up a month. Obviously we don’t know until the deadline if it matters, but it shouldn’t be. The thinking is that the top picks and the guys that are tough signings will sign at the deadline, regardless of when it is. So if they’re going to sign anyway right at the deadline, there’s no difference in moving it up, and that way you can get a solid month to month and a half of playing time in the minors before the year ends.

As for his ranking in the system, he’s certainly top 10, but I would put Harvey, Wheeler, and Nimmo (based on higher upside) higher than him right now. Cecchini probably fits somewhere amidst Flores, Familia, Mejia, Puello, and Tapia. That’s probably your top 9 right about now.
