Last Night on the Farm – 6/7/12

No wasting time, let’s get to it:

Buffalo 3, Columbus 2

Garrett Olson had a nice outing, giving up 2 runs over 5 innings and getting the win.  Manny Acosta of all people struck out 3 in 1.1 innings.  Josh Edgin faced 5 batters, got all of them out, including 3 on strikeouts.  Corey Wimberly, Raul Reyes, Dustin Martin, and Sean Kazmar all had 2 hits.  If Omar Quintanilla hits the DL, Kazmar and his .125 AAA average could very well be the Mets shortstop.

Binghamton 4, Harrisburg 1

Zack Wheeler continued his dominance of the Eastern League pitching 7 innings, giving up an unearned run on 2 hits.  He walked 4 (still an issue for him), but struck out 7.  Adrian Rosario pitched 2 scoreless innings, striking out 4.  Matt Den Dekker, Juan Lagares, and Kai Gronauer had 2 hits each.

Clearwater 3, St. Lucie 2

Angel Cuan struck out 5 in 5.1 innings, but let up 3 runs and took the loss.  Taylor Whitenton struck out 3 in 2 scoreless innings in relief.  The Lucies managed just 3 total hits.  Francisco Pena had 2 hits, including a double.  The third hit was a solo homer from Cory Vaughn, his 11 of the season, which puts him alone in the lead for most homeruns in the FSL.  Vaughn’s line sits at .235/.330/.446.

Asheville 2, Savannah 0 Game 1

Rafael Montero had a strong outing, striking out 4 in 6 innings, but he made 1 mistake in the form of a 2-run homer and that was the game.  A pair of singles by Cam Maron and a single by Travis Taijeron were the only hits the Gnats could muster.

Savannah 5, Asheville 4

Michael Fulmer let up 4 runs in 5 innings, but he came away with the win after Carlos Vazquez and T.J. Chism each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.  Brandon Brown hit a 2-run homer.  Charley Thurber and Travis Taijeron had 2 hits each.

    Go Go Gadget Wheeler!

This Wheeler kid is going to something special. Had no command and managed to go 7 shutout innings with only 2 hits allowed.

Should be arriving in Queens early May of 2013…

Didn’t get to hear the full BMets game but yes Wheeler was not as sharp as in his prior starts. With that said his only 2 hits was a swinging bunt base hit and an infield hit to Wheeler.

He hit 1 batter and at least through 5 if I remember correctly he had given up only 2 flyballs to the outfield for outs everything else was being hit into the ground or was a strikeout.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Wonder when they’ll be promoting him to AAA?

      1. Bryan

I think the plan has been to promote him between mid-July and the beginning of August, but they may be re-thinking that a little and possibly doing it sooner.

  3. Stickguy

promoting? My guess, they can’t wait any longer than the mid year/ASG MiL break. He really needs to go up to see if there is a challenge there.

as to control, some reports on the MiL blog were that he was working on the change up, and was throwing a lot of them early when in a “real” game he probably would not be going to it so much. SO how much is that he can’t control ,is pitches, vs. he was using one with 3 balls that he might not normally use so much, is a question.

he already has better stuff than batista orHefner, and once he gets a little more experience with dealing with the majors he will leave Gee int he dust too.

May 2013 is fine, for control year reasons, but I think he will earn a job out of ST next year.

Gee has been doing very well this year despite the ERA. I expected him to be nothing more than a AAAA pitcher, but he is striking out more and walking less.

Gee has been in the the top 25 in SO and he’s one start behind most of the guys on the list…

The Mets actually have 4 starters averaging over 8 strikeouts per 9. That’s pretty damn impressive.

and if Young manages to stay healthy, you can argue the Mets have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Now if the Mets had a bullpen and some healthy bodies we might just have a chance!

          1. Stickguy

and not many people prior to the year would have believed that, especially with Pelf (well, maybe more so with pelf…) going out for the year!

the healthy bodies part is certainly a problem.

and man, the pen just had some very visible failures, but there also were stretches were they (outside of a few guys now gone) were helping carry the team, with the SP going short there.

This is for the 1% of people here that don’t spend 95% of their time over at MMO.

Dan Valis over at MMO wrote an article titled “Mets And Yankee Fans Have A Mutual Dislike For Each Other” and while I don’t notice the dislike among people of my generation you do see it in the younger fans. But basically he wrote the following that echoes my sentiments:

“I root against the Yankees in every way. I know why I do it too, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I am jealous of them and their organization. Where is our Derek Jeter? Well, his name is Jose Reyes, and we had to let him walk! Would the Yankees ever let that happen, if they had a 28 year old superstar at shortstop, NEVER! I don’t want an all-star at every position like they do, and I don’t want to buy my championships like they do either. I am just jealous of their their homegrown guys like Cano, MO, Posada and Jeter will all stay with the team until the end, and contribute to the teams success. They just run a more professional organization then we do, and above all else, all they do is win. If they start to falter, or have some holes, they just go out and get what they need and keep chugging. I’m not asking to be them, I just am jealous that they always find a way to make things work, where we always find to way to go in the wrong direction. Hopefully that will change with Sandy, but aside from the occasional 2000 and 2006 seasons, most years are left looking forward to next season.”

If I commented there I would tell him how much I enjoyed his article.

    1. Mr North Jersey

You really should let him know you enjoyed it. I mean is there anything keeping you from doing so?

I just read it a while ago and left a comment.

I detest getting into flaming wars with juveniles over such a trivial topic as sports. So outside of reading the articles I generally don’t bother with posting at sites that seem to thrive on insults.

I never really equated jeter and reyes, other than (duh) playing SS. conceptually he would be more analogous to Wright.

I think you can also easily question if Reyes is a “superstar”

but very much a part of it is playing in an entirely different $ spectrum, and not having to make roster decisions for budgetary reasons. Certainly helps retaining guys when you can pay them well more than other teams!

of course, that also helped buy other teams best players too.

anyway, I agree that I hate everything about the Yankees, but mostly their fans. I just hate smug, obnoxious attitude, and really hate people that think because the team they root for is successful, they personally are “better” than you (as if they had anything to do with it!)

Phillie fans have adopted this attitude recently (after 100 years of being downtrodden also rans!). Though it is nice to see that the entitled smug arses are now booing the Phils because they got old and hurt and are no longer the big bad bully team.

“but very much a part of it is playing in an entirely different $ spectrum, and not having to make roster decisions for budgetary reasons. Certainly helps retaining guys when you can pay them well more than other teams!”

The Yankees can do this because of the huge incoming resources they derive from continually winning in NY, the same town the Mets play in. And this all comes down to the Yankees being a better run business. These resources are there for the Mets taking if the owners had a clue. While the revenue difference criticism is valid in Tamp Bay vs. New York it doesn’t play when you’re in the same town and have access to the same food supply that feeds Goliath.
