The Mets were defeated 4-2 tonight at Yankee Stadium.
Why the Mets lost:
They just couldn’t get the job done on offense. They stranded runners on base to end an inning five times and despite out-hitting the Yankees 8-6, they lost.
Why the Yankees won:
They just hit a bunch of home runs.
Discussion points:
- Dillon Gee pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out five. He was pretty good, but got out–pitched by his counterpart Phil Hughes, who allowed only two runs.
- David Wright had another home run tonight, his eighth. He is starting to slow down with regards to his batting average, but is still managing to have productive games.
- The Yankee bullpen shut out the Mets, piecing together 2.2 innings with four pitchers. Even without Mariano Rivera, they’re not that bad.
- Why did Terry Collins pinch-hit Jordanny Valdespin for Scott Hairston in the ninth? I know Hairston doesn’t hit righties well, but you’ve got to have your run producer in that situation. Plus, Valdespin himself is hitting only .136 in 22 at-bats versus right-handers this season as well.

Very evident watching these two teams play, the differences between the Yankee lineup and ours.
We’ve got very little power and it’s starting to show. Gee pitched good enoghfor them to win, but when you’ve got a couple of black holes sprinkled with singles hitters, the losses might start adding up here in June. Aren’t going to really get it done with just Wright and Duda. Multiple injuries are starting to be felt.
