good stuff. liked hearing it. Hope it plays out the way he suggests (staying in the race and getting some help).
Also good to get the official perspective on the Gavin pick. I never bought into it being a 2nd tier guy just because he would sign cheap.
I do like to see that they seem to be concentrating on guys with actual useful skills (making contact, and playing defense). Guess I am just tired of seeing an adventure every time the other team hits the ball!
maybe soon we can see Den Dekker and his splashy D anchoring the OF too (someone posted this on another site)

Really, the Astros could be blasted for drafting their number 1 and then signing him under slot. That should be viewed as cheap no? Or just smart… hmmm, depends on who’s looking at it I guess.
Honestly, I’m happy with the draft and hope they sign all the players. The fact they got a SS they project to actually play SS and is already under contract is great.

As with all drafts no one really knows how good or bad their choices were until a few years down the road.
This new system in place for the draft will be worth watching to see how teams decisions pan out.
There was an interesting article I saw today regarding the Pirates and Boras in how things will break down with the signing of the Bucs pick of Mark Appel.

2 quotes from this video that stood out for me.
1. “It’s very possible we will still need help in the bullpen but there may be some other areas of need that will emerge and we’ll have to address.”
A recognition that the pen despite attempts to improve it have at least till now not been all that successful.
2. “We have to see where we are at the time of the deadline or during the couple of weeks that lead up to it to really have a good sense of what our needs might be. Whether we need to fill in for a younger player or a veteran player or for someone that’s been injured. We’ve had a lot of injuries at SS for example during the last month or so and that might be an issue for us.”
The injuries at SS are a concern especially depth wise as they near the ASB.

Good stuff here. Thanks for posting.
‘If we’re in the race, as I expect we will be….’
Said that a couple of times. Doesn’t sound like a GM who wrote off this season as ‘building for the future’ only.
Gavin was in their top 6 and expects him to stay at SS and hit.
Very nice.
