In an article at ESPN they are reporting that NYC has agreed with a development group that includes the Mets on a $3 billion dollar deal to “construct a mix of retail, hotel and commercial space in a gritty area made up of auto repair shops and junkyards.” – Link

Daniel Massey of Crain’s New York wrote an article that reported sources to say that the 2 developers Related Companies & Sterling Equities had teamed up to place a bid on the project back in October while in the midst of the Clawback situation. – Link

    Can you say eminent domain?

  2. Stick

that could be a fantastic area if they do it right. And certainly more attractive.

Where the hell am I going to get parts for my Mercedes and Bugati Veyron if they proceed with the planned area improvement?

Dang. I was hoping the development would include some housing like condos. Had my retirement spot for the summer months all picked out. :-)

I am sure your husband would have loved that!

They plan on adding 5000 condo/apt units. Your dream will come true.

      Condo/apt units? Really? Hmmmm.

And LOL yeah Stick…haven’t really brought this up to hubby yet. I’m sure that would be a hard sell. Retiring in Queens NY would not be his first choice…….

Probably on the 20th choice either lol. With the amount of waste that is there, I wouldn’t buy in. There are now sewers or underground plumbing. So all that waste just soaks into the soil and the currents take it in and out.

I am not a proponent of “eminent domain”. In NH we are dealing with a possible electric transmission line from Canada (called the Northern Pass) though the entire state North to South that would affect tons of people.

On this particular project I am actually ok with it. As an outsider that area is scarey as all hell. Also when you look at planning those facilities don’t make a lot of sense there. I would hope that they would help with relocation efforts. Not to hard to move a steel hanger.

Add in all this commercial and real estate space will also benefit the US Open and adjoining worlds fair park.

Good article in Daily News regarding the project:

It needs to be done. It’s kind of embarrassing driving past row upon row of chop shops on the way to the parking lot.

Salty – I’m also opposed to eminent domain, which makes me conflicted, but in this case, that area has to be cleaned up.
