Niese Pitches Well, Bailey Pitches Better In 4-1 Loss

The Mets were defeated by the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 today at Citi Field.

Why the Mets lost:

The Mets couldn’t muster up enough offense against Reds starter Homer Bailey. Bailey allowed just six hits over eight innings of work.

Why the Red won:

The Reds struck early in the first, with Jay Bruce Hitting a three-run home run that ended up being the difference in the game. Otherwise, Niese pitched very wall, allowing only three hits and one run in the rest of his outing.

Discussion points:

  • The only run the Mets scored tonight came from a first inning RBI double by David Wright. This offense has been so inconsistent lately. This was not what I was hoping for after that promising Tampa Bay series.
  • The offense missed a golden opportunity to get back in the game early during the second inning when they had first and third with no outs. Quintanilla popped out, Niese laid down an awful bunt, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis flied out to end the frame. Missed opportunities were huge in the early part of the game.
  • The FOX broadcast team……
  • The Mets take on the Reds tomorrow in a Father’s Day matchup between Chris Young and Johnny Cueto as the MEts try to salvage something out of this series.

Could not believe we had a hard time getting to Baily tonight. Baseball is a funny game. Would have been nice to win this one with the Nats losing.

That FOX broadcast team is the worst I’ve ever listened to. If I’m not mistaken it’s at least half of the Reds hometown booth, if not both of them. I almost wanted to win the game more just to listen to those 2 whine. Really annoying.

I forget who the play by play guy was, but his dad was the play-by play man of the Reds back in the 70s and is a lifelong fan. Sean Casey, the color guy (right?) spent the majority of his career with the Reds (98-05).

classic case of having a guy on the ropes early, and continuing to let him off and he finally gets settled in and you are done.

Pretty much a must win again tomorrow.

    This damned team is schizophrenic.

bad 1st for neise, but at least he settled in and made it through 7 with only that 1 more run.

They so badly miss that 1 more big bat in the middle of the order. Damned you Bay, and Omar for signing you.

Schizophrenic is exactly the term I was thinking of earlier today for this team. Dominating the Cardinals, then losing 2 of 3 to Washington and getting a beatdown from the Yankees, then dominating the Rays, now getting shut down by the Reds.

Basically, this is a young team with talent and a lot of gaping holes.

Oh, and I’m not nearly ready to declare “Ike is back!” just yet, but if he continues to improve from the early doldrums, they could have the extra big bat in the middle of the order that you mention.

They have some young talent but the best of the lot may still be in the minors. BTW as the youngsters come up to the majors and replace the mediocre veterans you may temporarily see a step backwards before you see further progress.

This is a fun team and what more can you ask for at this point.

Well, I wasn’t saying they’re a team with tons of talent, just that there is some talent there and it’s young (Ike, Duda, Niese, etc). They are playing with several filler parts right now (Hefner, Quintanilla, Valdespin, Torres, Murphy, the list goes on), and I do think they’re still playing over their heads. There will definitely be steps backward along the way. Here’s hoping that one of those good looking young pitchers in the minors actually develops into something really good, and someone develops into a legit big power bat. The team really needs those for the future.

You make it sound as if Bay is the difference between a World Championship or the basement. The problem is not with Bay but rather with ownership. The team across town that we love to hate is run properly for the city they’re in and are an enormously successful business. The people that measure the Yankees success by the number of championships that they have recently won have the business acumen of an ameba. The Yankees are in the playoffs every year and rake in the profits. They make a mistake or someone injures himself they replace him and move on. They can do it because they are a well run franchise and the Mets can’t do it because they’re run like Mom & Pop’s variety shop with assistance from yea Bernie Madoffs Ponzi hardware store . That’s why one has the resources and the other doesn’t. Hopefully the future for this franchise will be brighter but unfortunately it’s the same ownership.

Homer Baily kept getting in trouble but we left him off the hook to many times. Though it means little as far as tonight but Davis & Wright hit some balls hard but the park held them in.

    Avoid the sweep.

PS For all you Dads out there have a Happy Fathers Day.

If the play was made on Wilson Valdez’s bunt single Niese never would have faced Bruce. Ike has to be more assertive on the play since he probably has the base-runner at second if he makes the throw. However, someone has to cover first on that play.
