R.A.Dickeyulous!!!
If you still haven’t cleared your schedule for Dickey’s next start what are you waiting for? R.A. is must see TV.
Back to back complete game 1 hitters are you kidding?
If you happened to listen to Howie Rose he had the phrase of the night regarding Dickey. He said “The Brothers Grimm & Hans Cristian Anderson have nothing on this (R.A. Dickey) story!”
On the TV side Gary Cohen had the phrase of the night regarding Ike Davis he said “It’s official Ike Davis is back.” after Ike hit a Grand Slam to put the Mets up 4-0.
If Gary is right and Ike Davis is indeed back give the Mets GM Alderson the manager Terry Collins the hitting instructor Dave Hudgens and everyone that stood by Ike as he fought and continues to fight his way back credit for making the “bold move” in keeping him here. Then get out of his way and say watch out N.L. Pitching.
Great season thus far. So many good stories with these Mets. What a ride so far.
Santana on the hill 2morrow.

On that note of clearing your schedule for the next RA start…
Both RA and CC pitched tonight. So it should be a match up of those 2 this weekend. My money is on RA at Citi Field.

We’ve all run out of superlatives to describe RA Dickey.
This run is absolutely incredible. He’s so locked in. Love that pic used here with that small fist pump with that last K.
And thank you Ike Davis. Just what the doctor ordered.

really nothing left to say about Dickey other than Wow. And if you take out the Atlanta monsoon innings, his ERA is something crazy like 1.2 or 1.4.
And really nice to see Ike coming back to life. No idea if it would have happened quicker with some time in AAA, but if he really is back to being a legit ML player, it is going to help the team immensely.
So, with Bay now gone (my guess, he has played his last game for the Mets, and will not be back this year, and there is a very real possibility he just retires at this point), the next big debate has to be 2B, right?
the OF is pretty well set other than slicing up a few starts between hairston, torres and kirk. With Duda there every day.
!B, catcher and 3B are obviously set.
so, that leaves MI as the wildcard. When Tejada gets back, he will start. So that leaves Omar, Murphy and Spin (I guess some turner too) to fight for 2B.
And that could be an interesting situation. Murphy just is not really adding value (outside of his Grit!), and frankly could make an OK bench guy. or fine trade bait (if anyone wants him now…)
So, could they make a bold move, trade Murphy, and roll with Spin getting most of the starts, Turner a few vs. LHP, with Omar or cedeno on the bench for defense and back-up SS?
small sample, but in his last 10 games Valdy has a decent BA and a lot of XBHs. Not a fantastic OBP, but that is not gonna be part of his game for a bit! But he does add some power and speed, and really, not that much lower than Murphy, who is no OB machine himself!

oh, and even with the roller coaster ride lately, and all the doom and gloom after a few losses in a row, as of today the Mets are all alone in 2nd place in the division again, and back in the virtual playoffs.
and only 4 games out of the division.
Just a little bit left of the Knog death march portion of the schedule, so if they can get through that without dropping any more games toward .500, who knows?

if they go 3-2 through the weekend, to finish this tough stretch 11-11, I really don’t want to hear any more about them overachieving, etc. They will have to be considered for real, and a competitive team.
and look around the league. There are not a lot of good (or non-flawed) teams. Outside of the division leaders, there are only 4 (including the Mets) that are more than 1 game over .500! And this is almost 1/2 way into the season.
so basically, with the overwhelming level of mediocrity, why not the Mets?
kingman 26
6/18/2012-10:59pm at 10:59 pm (UTC -4)
My quick answer, as I sort of convinced myself with my last post, is the last five years.
To some degree, a choke/collapse in the 2nd half EVERY year after 2006.
Every year at some point between right now and late September, they have been above .500 and in the hunt only to collapse.
Sure, there are different players, it is Collins’ 2nd year, etc., but we have to wait and see if Niese will not fade/get hurt again, if Young can stay healthy, if Ike continues hitting, if the atrocious pen does not cost more games, etc.
Hey, I love what they have done, I love how they have fought the odds, but they are 8-9 in this stretch, with 2 Dickey 1-hitters and a Johan no-hitter!
So let’s not get TOO crazy.
I want the postseason as much as any sane fan, but I still say my goal for this season remains 82 wins or more. They can really build on that after the last half decade of disasters.
Stick
6/18/2012-11:11pm at 11:11 pm (UTC -4)
so what you are saying is, they’re due?
seriously though, every year is a different situation. though a big wildcard is how Sandy plays things.
that, and injuries. Hopefully they got that out of the way early.
and I still expect to see more player movement in the pen. Hopefully it improves overall, but hell, how could it get worse?
kingman 26
6/18/2012-11:20pm at 11:20 pm (UTC -4)
They are due for second-half luck with injuries for sure.
But again, subtract Niese and Young, and we go from .500+ to disaster pretty quick.
Having said that, if Dickey/Johan/Young/Niese/Gee stay healthy the rest of the year, there is no reason 82+ wins cannot happen, and if Johan and Niese finish strong, a WC might be within reach as well.
There, I said it.

They’re overachieving. I said it. And I’ll continue saying it until they’ve clinched a .500 record or are eliminated from contention.

Haven’t felt like this about a Met pitcher since 1985. It almost seems like RA allows someone to reach 1B so he can work on his stretch under game conditions.
That 9th inning, you almost get the impression that the O’s had just given up hope. Kind of like the Steppes of Europe waiting for the Golden Hoarde to pay a visit.

To semi quote Darling on the post game show regarding Valdespin: ‘He’s a bit of a lazy player, but there’s no denying the talent in the field, the speed and the pop in the bat. The talent is there.’
Translation IMO: If he can just get his act together he can go from a utility guy to a starting 2nd baseman.

I’ve said it before but it’s the velocity that makes it do unhittable. A “normal” K b starts to break a lot sooner so you get the movement, but it extends well outside the strike zone. But with Dickey’s the speed means it breaks so late that if he just aims for dead center of the strike one it will break within it someplace. And the batter has no chance adjusting since its at 80+. while it is similar to KBs of the past it is flat out a new pitch for all intents snd purposes.
I liked the Thole quote: RA has stopped feeling sorry for me.

Great stuff. Josh Thole always appears to be so upbeat. If I’m not mistaken, he’s the only catcher over these past 3 years who doesn’t mind catching RA. I read where RA gave Josh the over sized softball mitt he now uses to catch him and it’s made it easier. If you notice, Josh doesn’t even bother with a target half the time anymore. Just gets ready to smother the ball when it comes in.

He just throws it so fast it is an entirely new pitch. Like Sutter. It’s not a KB in the traditional Niekro sense – its the Befuddler.

Just what I said above—he has kind of invented a new pitch.
The Dickball?
The Dicker?
Omar’s Revenge?
The Throws of Kilimanjaro? (Sorry Ernest)

One caller said CC had 10 k’s tonight and Somers replied yeah but Dickey had 13 and he only gave up 1 hit. LMAO.

It’s a shame that R.A. can’t start every game. The Mets would be virtually undefeated.

NOOOO. If the Mets didn’t have an off day, I’d have the post game for Dickey’s next start!

I go back to the mid 1950’s and RA’s assortment of knuckleballs with the concomitant variation in velocity is indeed unique and sets him apart from some of the great ones I have seen. We can talk about some players overachieving, etc. but the Mets are where they are in the standings because of RA.

The movement on RA’s pitches reminds me of the action of the spitball.
