Last Night on the Farm – 6/18/12

Last night on the farm Collin McHugh made his AAA debut, a couple major leaguers rehabbed in St. Lucie, and the Cyclones played their season opener.  Let’s take a look:

Norfolk 7, Buffalo 5

Collin McHugh made his long-awaited AAA debut, going 5 plus innings and giving up 4 runs on 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 5.  McHugh gave up just 1 run through 5, but allowed the first 3 batters of the 6th to reach base.  McHugh will certainly settle down and be better in future starts.  Josh Edgin came in next and allowed McHugh’s inherited runners to score as well as 2 runners of his own while only getting 1 out.  Corey Wimberly was 4 for 5 with an RBI.  Matt Den Dekker was 2 for 4 with a double, a homerun, and 2 RBI’s.

Bradenton 6, St. Lucie 5

Angel Cuan had another good outing, giving up 2 runs across 6 innings, striking out 5.  A rehabbing Ramon Ramirez gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in an inning of work.  A rehabbing Ruben Tejada went 1 for 5 with a double and a strikeout while playing 9 innings at shortstop.  Francisco Pena was 3 for 4.  Richard Lucas and Alonzo Harris hit back-to-back homers in the 9th to pull St. Lucie within 1, but the Lucies couldn’t complete the comeback.

Brooklyn 2, Staten Island 0

The Cyclones opened up the season with a win over the hated Yankees.  Gabriel Ynoa got a no decision but pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and no walks while striking out 4.  Darwin Frias pitched 2 scoreless innings to get the win and Tyler Vanderheiden (19th round pick) struck out 2 in a perfect 9th inning to get the save.  Phillip Evans and Alexander Sanchez had 2 hits each.  Stefan Sabol and Cole Frenzel were hitless but provided the RBI’s.  Brandon Nimmo was 0 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in his Brooklyn debut.

On the flight deck of the USS Yorktown Savannah’s Travis Taijeron advanced to the finals of the SAL homerun derby, which will be held tonight prior to the all-star game.  Taijeron, T.J. Rivera, and T.J. Chism will represent the Sand Gnats.

Collin McHugh….as you pointed out, hopefully that not so good start was a bit of nerves and getting his feet wet with the promotion.

Good to see so far, Den Dekker appears to pick up in AAA right where he left off in AA.

Ruben Tejada….I didn’t realize he was playing already. Hopefully he doesn’t have any set backs and we’ll see him back up here shortly.

He was fine through 5 innings except the walks and that;s probably just nerves and adjusting to a new level.

Sounds like Edgin had a rough night. dD is ripping it up. Trade Torres for a batting glove and a pair of spikes, stat! ;-)

If DD can keep up the production and not go crazy with the Ks, it could happy. Not sure there will be any team wanting to trade for him at the deadline, but you never know.

Or he can just be a bench guy?

but a 3 man rotation of DD, the captain and Hairston for LF and CF is entirely possible. Not sure who the 5th OF will be, but it should be a RH bat (though it could be Baxter when he gets back, meaning the OF is 4 LH batters).

At this point, it’s probably just wishful thinking but it is nice to see some of the kids playing well at upper levels in the minors.
