Mets Fall Just Short, Lose To Yankees 4-3

Why the Mets lost:

Terry Collins left Chris Young in one inning too long. He was dealing and his pitch count was low, so I don’t blame Collins for leaving him in, but it cost him.

Why the Yankees won:

Timely hitting and a little bit of luck.

Discussion points:

  • Wow, that was a real nail-biter.
  • Those two homers were barely out of the park. In “The Old Citi Field,” neither of those would have been out.
  • Chris Young was very good. Through six, he looked absolutely dominant. However, that seventh was what killed the Mets and he was in the middle of it.
  • The seventh inning was a big disappointment. Valdespin made it to second with no outs, but David Wright, Lucas Duda, and Daniel Murphy all failed to drive him home. Hits in those situations are what separates third place teams from first place teams.
  • Great pitching matchup to look forward to tomorrow… Hopefully, the Mets and R.A. Dickey can pull out the series. Let’s go Mets!

    Ugh.
11 LOB. Not going to win many games doing that.

Spin needs to be sent down and learn how to hit ML pitching. I suspect he does get sent down when Ruben returns.

Youong had a good game, until Duda kind of open the gates there with that misplay in RF.

Rauch has 7 losses now. Ouch.

TC said after the game Ike was so sick they sent him home.

Also: FF was not available tonight. After the game last night he felt something on his left side – rib, oblique – he doesn’t now. It’s still bothering him.
They’ll reevaluate tomorrow. Might be getting ahead of myself but can’t imagine who they try for closure if he goes on the DL.

i’m sure Ramon Ramirez will be rushed back despite his terribleness in his rehab performances.

Would like to see them call up Beato already and I agree with sending Valdespin down.

I can’t get on Collins for sticking with Young tonight up to when he did. Young was pitching shutout ball gave up a leadoff walk and then a ball that Duda misread and it dropped in for a hit. Giving Young a chance to at least get Ibanez out was ok with me. It just in this case was the 1 mistake Young made all night and it cost him 3 runs.

I also while disappointed can’t get too mad at Rauch who had started to pitch better of late for giving up an opposite field HR to Chavez that barely got over the wall.

My disappointment is in Wright’s at bat tonight in the bottom of the 7th. He needed to pick up the pitching and get Spin home from 2b there. He moved the runner over but right there you wanted to see him pick those guys up.

You really couldn’t expect to sweep the Yanks and when outside of your starter you can only muster 2 runs well it is that much harder to win.

If they win 2morrow and take 2 out of 3 I’ll be good with that.

Dickey on the hill 2morrow night. Hope the weather calls for clear skies.

    LGM!

Chavez’s homerun was similar to the ball Kirk hit and Ibanez’s homerun was hit better than the ball Davis hit yesterday. But who cares? If the Mets hit one that scrapes the back of the fence going out I’m happy. They don’t give you more runs for the length of the homerun. The fact is they left a boat load of men on base, Terry was short in the bullpen preventing him from making moves and Duda was terrible in the field and at bat tonight. Perhaps he needs a night off. OTOH if Murphy had an once of power his ball goes out and the Mets win.

Frustrating game, but here’s hoping R.A. gets CC tomorrow. I really can’t fault TC for leaving Young in against Ibanez. If he brings Byrdak in, then Andruw Jones is the PH and you basically waste Byrdak (who was probably being saved for Granderson or Cano later). Having one lefty in the pen is a real head scratcher. I believe you need two. Also, TC was short a man in the pen, so he was probably trying to squeeze one more inning out of Young. Just didn’t work out. It’s frustrating that Mejia and Ramon Ramirez are throwing the ball so lousy right now. The pen could use some reinforcements. Guess Beato has been pretty good though. Maybe Rottino gets sent down and they bring Beato up. Can’t be a few men down in the pen.

certainly a frustrating game. right there for the taking, and they couldn’t get it done. Best be winning tomorrow to at least salvage the series.

did not know about franky. But for all the complaining (especially by a core of Sandy haters), he has been mostly pretty good, outside of a few notable games early in the season.

No clue who would replace him, but I would rather not see him trying to pitch hurt.

I think they will need a bunch of moves soon. Tejada likely back, so Spin down? and they need another RP anyway, so what, beato up, and Omar DFA? and if Franky has to DL, who? Ramon?

    gonna be messy!

I would expect on Monday for Rottino and Valdespin to be sent down for Beato and Tejada

might keep rotino and dump Omar though.

having cedeno and Quint seems like a duplication, and a real week bench. How many back up SSs do you need?

Rotino at least has some power potential, and can catch or play OF in needed.

Problem is, Omar is out of options. If they send him down, he’ll certainly be picked up. Mets have to be prepared to lose him.
