For the first 2 months of the season the Mets affiliates had a better record than anybody else in baseball, but lately there has been a lot of losing. Save for a win by red-hot Brooklyn the losing continued yesterday. Let’s reluctantly take a look:
Durham 12, Buffalo 6
Jeurys Familia was perfect through the first 2 innings and then the wheels fell off. He ended up going 3.1 innings and giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Elvin Ramirez had struggled of his own giving up 5 runs (2 earned) in 1.2 innings. Pedro Beato threw 3 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk, doing so on just 32 pitches. The Herd had plenty of offense, but it wasn’t enough. Matt Den Dekker was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Jordany Valdespin had 3 hits. Josh Satin hit his 7th homer of the year.
Altoona 7, Binghamton 4
Cory Mazzoni lasted just 4 innings, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits. Mazzoni gave up 2 homeruns to former Mets farmhand and a teammate of Mazzoni’s in St. Lucie last year Stefan Welch. Eastern League all-star Eric Campbell had 3 hits. Wilfredo Tovar and Wilmer Flores both had 2 hits. Allan Dykstra made his return to Binghamton after some rehab work with St. Lucie.
Fort Myers 4, St. Lucie 2
Angel Cuan took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 9 hits over 6 innings. Cory Vaughn, Juan Torres, and Robbie Shields all had doubles, but no one in the St. Lucie lineup had more than 1 hit. Adam Loewen was 1 for 3 with 2 walks in another rehab appearance.
Savannah was rained out. They will play two with Augusta today.
Brooklyn 3, Hudson Valley 0
Luis Mateo struck out 6 and walked none in 6 scoreless innings of work, surrendering just 3 hits. David Wynn and Tyler Vanderheiden pitched the final 3 innings. The Cyclones managed just 4 hits, including a Cole Frenzel homer, but it was enough to win. Brandon Nimmo was 0 for 4.
Greeneville 12, Kingsport 0
The nightmare continues for the K-Mets. Akeel Morris made his 3rd start of the season and got his 3rd loss. He lasted 6 innings and struck out 7 against 2 walks, but he allowed 4 runs on 5 hits. Miller Diaz pitched an inning plus and let up 8 runs (6 earned) with 4 hits and 4 walks. The K-Mets made 2 errors and had just 3 hits. Maikis De La Cruz, Michael Bernal, and jeff Diehl all singled and that was it.

Is Familia ever going to develop enough consistency to have a shot at staying a SP? Or is it time to start the conversion, and get him in the RP mindset?
Beato probably should be coming up soon. Just have to figure out who he replaces. Looking at you, Ramon. Though Batista is not a bad option either. So that means they probably would send down Hefner, the long man, since he has options (I think…)
Flores and DD getting a couple hits is always nice to see. Keep working at 2B Wilmer!

I don’t see any way Familia is ever a SP in the big leagues, but I imagine he’ll keep starting the rest of the season because it’s the best way to get him innings and hopefully make improvements. They’ll probably move him to the bullpen at the start of next year unless he magically gets better and they bring him up in September and use him out of the bullpen, but that’s unlikely considering Wally was talking about a possible demotion for him after yesterday’s game.
I still don’t understand why Beato isn’t up yet. Hefner does have options and although he has pitched well they have Batista and Ramirez who can be the long man. Of course, they’ll have to demote someone when Frank comes back so bringing Beato up means two demotions, although Ramirez has be working his way towards getting the boot.

I was wondering where that rumor came from about a possible Familia demotion.
Hefner and Batista in the BP is just redundant. No need for both of them. And to mention that Hefner has probably pitched about 3 times in the past 17 days. If they’re not going to use him, just send him back down and bring up Beato.
Or start using Hefner then one of Ramirez or Batista can go.

I could live with Beato and 3F replacing Batista and Ramirez (fresh blood baby!)

Are Mets making Beato’s name plate yet?

right now, in the Pen, I am done with Ramirez and batista. The remaining weak links.
Rauch has actually looked pretty good recently. Certainly better than he was. So wonder if that elbow issue was impacting him more than we realized?

Maybe not after three starts, but should be done at some point. Age wise, he’s about 6 months older than Rafael Montero, who just got moved to St. Lucie, so Mateo, despite lack of time in the States, should be able to handle the SAL.
