Tough loss when you consider how well Young pitched. Had a nice discussion in the dugout over the use of the pen with Oleo and though we disagree on certain aspects the big picture is the pen just has not been able to find a consistently reliable arm that is outside of Byrdak.
Take 2 out of 3 with Dickey on the hill 2morrow and keep moving on.

I just don’t understand how they can send down a guy that doesn’t struggle against lefties when Batista, Rauch and Ramirez have struggled to get lefties out all season.
I also don’t understand why Miguel Batista has continued to be used in a setup role, when he has proven time and time again that he is simply a ROOGY.

batista is the long/mop up man. How terry decided (even with knowing his other options) that Batista is the guy to use as the set up man is beyond me.
and I too am astounded that they decided to go with a short pen, and 1 lefty again. because as Oleo noted, right now, the pen is all OOGYs (unless you trust rauch). So if you have 4 ROOGYs, you really better have more than 1 LOOGY!
man, they miss Franky. if he was still active, you don’t see Batista.

Yeah, Terry’s love for Batista is a true head-scratcher. Batista doesn’t throw enough strikes to be trusted in close games. He still throws hard enough and has decent movement, but his lack of command kills the team. He should just be an innings-eating long man, taking the ball when the game is out of hand. And Hefner needs to be sent down. He should be starting at AAA. He was somewhat effective as a spot starter earlier in the year. Having him and Batista in the same pen is redundant, as they are both long-men/sacrificial lamb type pitchers, only to be used in blowouts.

even with Francisco closing and Parnell as the setup man you still need a 2nd lefty b/c of the how bad the other guys on the staff have been in getting lefties out
It’s mindblowing that they sent Hampson down instead of Hefner since the 40-man spot wasn’t used…

I agree on the second lefty. When I saw Hampson was DFA’d, I thought it was to make room for Edgin.

Why Collins is fascinated with Batista in the 8th i do not know. Byrdak faced Rollins who was hitting .228 vs lefties and he hit a flyball that one can argue Torres should not have allowed to get over his head. Seems this is a pattern with him though oddly enough up to that point SNY made note of how much better it seemed Torres was getting back on flyballs.
SNY jinx?
Even after Rollins got the double to extend the lead 4-2 the game was still within reach. Collins though then went to Hefner and he just imploded.
The pen has been inconsistent this is common knowledge. I am not going to pin this loss on the fact that Hampson who has also struggled was sent down for the option of having Spin back in there in case we needed it to have someone play the OF since they only had Duda, Hairston and Torres as outfielders.

Hef doesn’t have the stuff to be a late-innings reliever. He should have been sent back down to make room for Valdespin, so he can start at AAA. He was a decent option as a spot starter with his assortment of junk. Batista, if he must be on the team, should be the long-man, pitch in blowouts guy Hefner has been.

7/4/2012-5:03pm at 5:03 pm (UTC -4)
If they sent Hef down over Hampson I can see that move. My point is that as far as today the onus is on the pitcher to do his job and he just failed. To say had he not been there the results would of been different (not that anyone dis say that) would be to deny what has been happening most of the season.

Noone was blaming the loss on it, but simply the chance to come back.
Having a 2nd lefty on the roster enables the manager to avoid using Byrdak against a RHB (in which he struggles) and instead save him for Utley and only Utley.
There were other moves to make instead of sending down Hampson, which would have made more sense (Hefner for example)
We are at the halfway point of the season, and the manager should realize by now that Rauch, Batista and Ramirez struggle against lefties. Why they continue to be used like this is beyond me…

using Byrd when they did does not seem to be the issue. It was having batista in to face the lefty starting off the 8th inning, instead of the 2nd (phantom) lefty from the pen!

I hate giving the phils any life. Tomorrow now is a must, have to, season on the line type game now (for both teams).
mets cant afford to lose to these schmoes with Dickey on the mound. And if the Phils win again, beating the ace, it is going to jump start their season.
I predicted in the dugout that if the Phils win tomorrow, it is guaranteed they will be going on a run and will end up in the playoffs.
so, no pressure or anything RA!

Relax. Go back out to the barbeque and have another cold one. But if you decide to jump off one of your local bridges that connect NJ to PA see if you can arrange to have someone send us a photograph.
Even if the Mets lose tomorrow it has little impact on a grand scale for either team. For the Mets it just continues the pattern of win a couple, lose a couple, etc. For the Phillies it’s just one win in what has been a disastrous season.
Now for the game. TC has to realize that by the third time through the lineup Young’s slop of slow, slower and slowest no longer carries the element of surprise (even though you know in advance he throws at 80mph it still catches you off guard you when you face i)t and the hitters adjust to it. And regardless of what some say the backend (or guys that should be in the backend) of the bullpen have difficulty in keeping a game reachable when the Mets are behind.
Happy fourth of July and I wish that A&E and was still televising the entire Boston Pops concert.

who knows with the Mets, as schizophrenic as they are, but you are way underestimating the importance of the game to the Phils. THough the Mets really can’t afford to keep having bad, losing series to dregs teams (especially with another one coming in to town Friday)
They have been vastly underperforming the talent they still have (never mind what is coming back) and a big issue has been mental it seems. Getting them jump started is going to be a very, very bad thing.
So I will stick to my statement, that tomorrow is a huge game, and a must win.

The booth had an interesting observation on when Young tires. They said most pitcher’s when they get tired they start to elevate their pitches but Young when he gets tired center’s his pitches over the middle of the plate. Not a good place to live with slow stuff that is then tired slow stuff.

Very frustrating. Really wanted to sweep these guys and bury them. I love Chris Young, but he seems to be a 6-inning pitcher to me. The third time through the order, he often loses steam and gives up big homers. Still, he did what a starting pitcher is supposed to do, and that’s keep you in the game. The bullpen is downright deplorable. Batista should be flat out released, or at the very least should become the long man. He should be nowhere near a close game. Hefner should be sent back down to start, where he can fill in if another starter goes down. They should send him down and bring Beato up for now. I’d maybe take a look at signing Brian Fuentes, who was just DFA’d by Oakland. He has good overall numbers against lefties, and might help as the second lefty in the pen (Hampson was garbage and never should have been called up). Edgin is throwing the ball better of late and he could be another option down the line. Either way, just imagine where this team would be with even an average bullpen.

Sandy needs to do something with the pen at this point, besides waiting/hoping that the guys out there suddenly decide to be better pitchers!
batista and Hefner have to be on the bubble. and ramirez if he doesn’t look a lot better, real soon.
Beato, Franky and Edgin? Though I think they need to bring in another real back end guy (closer or set up man) to beef things up.
rauch, he seems to have figured something out recently.
so, I think they need to be bold, and go with:
Franky (hope it is just 15 days?)
Parnell
New Guy TBD (outside, so street, balfour, etc.)
Byrdak
Edgin
Rauch
Beato

oh, and what is the love affair with Quintella? Seems like they are making convoluted moves to keep him. He is not actually that good, and these days, not even used.
wouldn’t they be better off with another OF? Tejada, Cedeno, Muprhy and turner are more than enough MI depth. And they have a guy at AAA now having a big year that can fill the Omar role in an emergency.
Valdespin being up now is absolutely useless.
So Sandy, get off your ass and fix that problem too.
Wonder if Bay is really coming back right after the ASG? Another debacle in the making, considering how horrifically bad he was before he got hurt again.

Yeah, I actually thought Quintanilla should have been the guy to go when Rottino got DFA’ed because we don’t really need a pair of light-hitting middle infielders as bench players. I know Rottino was no great shakes, but he bats right handed and had a bit of pop, which was more useful than Q in my opinion.
Mr North Jersey
7/4/2012-4:57pm at 4:57 pm (UTC -4)
Yeah they eventually have to address Don Q.
They know they will lose him if he is put on waivers but you can’t allow that to hold up the roster spot long term.
They have to move him if he is not going to play or move Cedeno. If Spin is going to stay they may need to trade of just risk losing Quintanilla on waivers. At least Spn and Cedeno you have the right lefty bat off bench and though I dont want to see spin play ss. He at least can in a pinch.

Well as long as Kirk is unavailable they need another OF on the roster and in the lineup when the starter throws with his right hand.
Hairston and Torres are both pretty bad against RHP so ideally they should not be playing.
They have kept Q b/c they have lack MI depth, but I agree, it’s time to DFA him as well.
Call up Fred Lewis and either Edgin or sign Will Ohman/Brian Fuentes…

Another thing, I keep reading the Mets plan to pitch Dickey more often in the second half. Instead of giving him extra starts (as the rotation hasn’t been the problem), why don’t they just bring in R.A. in relief here and there, as needed? Wouldn’t that serve the team better? It’s the bullpen killing this team, not the rotation. Not that I really think they should mess much with Dickey, but if they insist on pitching him more, why not an inning here and there in the bullpen instead of dregs like Miguel Batista and Hefner?

Agree with others….Batista needs to be pushed back to the mop up role, since it’s obvious he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Send down Hefner so I guess we’ll be rolling the dice with the next arm.
Can’t believe I’m saying this but when is FF coming back? Put him back in the 9th, you’ve got Parnell for the 7th or 8th.

Fuentes, if used properly, could be somewhat useful. His splits against lefties are much better than righties. He’s desperately trying to build a fan base in Miami. But I don’t think he will be successful. He should have entered into an agreement to move the franchise to another State that would support his team. If need be he could sue MLB if they tried to block him. MLB’s antitrust exemption is BS and should be thrown out. No other sport has it and it should be ended.

The two prospects given up (3B Matt Dominguez and SP Rob Rasmussen) were ranked in their top 10 by Baseball America and other publications. However, their farm system is pretty weak. Dominguez has an excellent glove at 3B but hasn’t hit much in the upper levels but still has some potential, while Rasmussen is a little lefty (5-9) that was a second round pick two years ago. Dominguez former first round pick, so they aren’t total scrubs, which is what I thought Carlos Lee would net at this point in his career.

Wow, glad I was away from civilization drinking my friend’s beer cellar dry yesterday and missed this game. Despite the game, I hope all of your 4th of July celebrations were fun, safe, and thoroughly intoxicating
