Now that’s a great Met win and a devastating Phillie loss!

The ninth inning said it all last night about both teams.-which, at this point-seem to be going to opposite directions.  I tell you how things have changed…a couple of years ago, that would be how the Mets lost the game tonight.

So much has changed.

It terms of a loss, it was a devastating one for the N.L.East Chumps.  I means think about it from their point of view(which is really fun when you are a Mets fan)  You had your ace on the mound pitching the game of his life.  You fought back and regained the lead to take it into the ninth inning.  You survive the eighth inning with a bullpen that has band aids all over it and when you get to the ninth,  you put that  closer on the mound, the one which you paid a lot of money for……and he loads the bases with two outs and blows the game on a come backer and a bloop single by David Wright…..It’s the kind of a game that would send a team reeling and their GM to the phone to begin making trades.

And that’s what I’m talking about!

For the Mets side….it’s that two out, never say die, play 27 outs  baseball that Terry Collins has been preaching since Spring Training.  It’s that very attitude that the Phillies once had but sold away with their age and free agent pitchers.

It’s the game that throws a spotlight, not just on David Wright for hitting that bloop single, but the entire team for their hard play.    The Cubs are coming to town…..another team looking for Time Machine into the Off-Season.  Tonight’s game makes you think that the Mets are for real.  And I think it may be time to say that.

I went to bed tonight with a smile on my face again……knowing that the Mets didn’t pull out a miracle to win the ball game, but just played the game right and were rewarded.

A game that puts the Mets aiming for the top and the Phillies spiraling to an endless bottom.

    proving how the worm turns:

Tonight was the Phils 9th walk off loss of the season. That is a real lot, right?

and tell me this doesn’t scream of desperation:

Phils are calling up Howard to start at 1B tomorrow. after 6 games and 21 PAs , some as the DH.

he put up good numbers, but is still building back his leg strength, and running a bit awkwardly.

I hope that the rust and timing gets exposed bad in the majors.

good point about the age and payroll. Guys have had plenty of success and postseasons, and hit the payday jackpot. Combine that with being a bit older, and maybe they lose that edge a bit? the hunger?

that, and they have developed a huge entitlement complex as a team. They still think it is 2008, and they will also have whatever late game heroic comeback needed. Sucks when they don’t come though!

and yes, the Mets are for real. they have been all season. Though a few key reinforcements would certainly help stay that way, and keep going up.

Great read, Gonzo. You have a knack for writing and getting a point across that usually has me nodding my head in agreement.

I’ve aid it before….the 2012 Phil’s remind me of the 2009 Mets. Lots of injuries, lousy depth, bad BP and a high payroll that’s not getting them anywhere.

Any part that the Mets can play that buries them and makes sure they stay in the cellar is just fine with me.

Just out of curiousity I thought let me read what they are writing in Philly today. Here’s the link:

this was in the philly inquirer that I get. They were actually a lot calmer than I expected. It really seems that they have pretty much gotten the angst and drama out of their systems, and are resigned to this being a lost year.

      Sucks for them!

Gonzo by now I hope you have taken the cold shower you obviously needed and thanks for offering me comic relief with this article.

It was a nice win against a last place team. Right now the Phillies are not an issue and the only teams that concern me are the ones the Mets (hopefully) will battle for a WC.

The only Philadelphia team that concerns me is the Eagles as the NFL prepares for another glorious season. I enjoy letting Eagles fans know that in spite of their dancing when the Eagles beat the Giants they haven’t won sh*t and the Giants are the Super Bowl champions.
