Last Night on the Farm – 7/5/12

Oddly enough it was a Brooklyn loss that prevented an undefeated night in the organization.  Of course, a couple rainouts helped that.  As for the teams that did play: Buffalo went to extras, Zack Wheeler dominated, the Lucies played vintage Lucie baseball, and the Cyclones had their 6-game win streak snapped in a close one.  Let’s check out the details:

Buffalo 9, Syracuse 8 (14 innings)

This was a long one, but the Bisons were able to pull out a win.  Dylan Owen started but gave up 6 runs in 3 innings.  Josh Edgin threw a scoreless inning; he has not allowed a run in his last 8 outings.  Late in the game Fernando Cabrera threw 3 scoreless innings and Jeremy Hefner threw 4 shutout innings to propel Buffalo to the extra-inning win.  Lucas May was 4 for 5 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI’s.  Adam Loewen and Josh Satin both homered.  Matt Den Dekker was 0 for 6, dropping his average to .189.

Binghamton 5, Richmond 1

Zack Wheeler went 7.1 innings against the Giants AA affiliate, his first appearance against his old organization.  Wheeler gave up 1 run (that actually scored after he left the game) on 6 hits with 0 walks and 6 strikeouts.  He is supposed to appear in the future’s game next week and is likely approaching the end of his AA career.  Reese Havens was 3 for 5 with an RBI; in his last 10 games Havens is hitting .300/.378/.475, but has struck out 14 times in that span.  Juan Lagares, Wilmer Flores, Francisco Pena, and Wilfredo Tovar all had 2 hits each, and all but Tovar had a double included.

St. Lucie 7, Jupiter 1

Rafael Montero pitched 7 innings and gave up a run on 4 hits, walking 3 and striking out 4, improving to 2-0 in St. Lucie since his promotion.  Hamilton Bennett threw 2 scoreless frames.  Travis Taijeron was 3 for 5 with a homer and 2 RBI’s.  Richard Lucas was 2 for 4 with a double, homer, and 2 RBI’s.  Cory Vaughn also had a 2-hit game.  Zach Lutz was 1 for 4 with an RBI and 3 strikeouts in another rehab outing.

Savannah was rained out at home; they will play 2 on Saturday.

Williamsport 5, Brooklyn 4

Rainy Lara took the loss after giving up 4 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings of work; he struck out 9, raising his season total to 23 K’s in 15.2 innings.  Juan Gamboa was 2 for 5 with a homerun.  Brandon Nimmo and Cole Frenzel were both 1 for 4 with a double.

Kingsport was rained out in Elizabethton; they will play 2 today.

The mets should call up Havens. A left hand hitting K machine? He will fit in perfectly!

seriously though, nice to see the production come. Hopefully the ks start coming down now as he really gets settled in. I still have not given up on my guy.

He’s always been a strikeout per game guy, so I’m not sure that’s going to change. But he does balance it out a little by knowing how to take a walk.

You joke about a promotion to the Mets, but I think you have to consider a promotion to Buffalo if he keeps going well, as he’s spent the equivalent of a full year in Binghamton over the past 3 seasons.

I already am on record (as soon as he got hot) that he should be sent up to Buffalo. Not like taking ABs from Emaus is a bad thing, right? Best way to see if he is really back all the way.

Plus, it would give some time (only 3 weeks or so now) before the deadline to see if he can be a viable ML call-up at the trade deadline if they did something big and moved murphy.

Really happy to see Wheeler rebound after two bad starts the way he did last night.
