Yesterday was the Futures game and 2 Mets participated and coincidentally for both it was also their 2nd time there. Wilmer Flores was 1st selected to the Futures game in 2009 and Zack Wheeler was selected in 2010 while in the Giants organization.

The two biggest Mets to ever go to the Futures game are Jose Reyes (2002) and David Wright (2004). Their impact at the MLB level for the Mets makes them 2 of the best prospects to come out of the Mets system. Recently there are 3 prospects in particular that are trying to add themselves to that list, Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia who also have represented the Mets in past MLB Futures games and Zack Wheeler.
Of the three, Harvey and Familia are already at AAA knocking at the door and the last one Wheeler, is still in AA but reports are he may find himself possibly in AAA if he can dominate in a couple of more starts.
So I wanted to compare how this years NY Mets Futures representative Wheeler who has yet to be promoted to AAA has fared while in AA with the Binghamton Mets vs Harvey & Familia before they were promoted to AAA.
Wheeler is 2 starts behind Familia who leads the three with 17 but Wheeler has more innings pitched with 92.2/IP. Up to now Wheeler has maintained the more impressive ERA of the three with a 2.62/ERA while Familia in less innings pitched has struck out more hitters with 96 strikeouts.
Lastly what is probably most surprising considering control has been his weakest point is that Wheeler currently is averaging a lower BB/9 of the three with 3.4 walks per 9 innings.

Your break down isn’t in depth enough. You have to look at at when they were drafted. If someone went to college, then they had the chance to become seasoned. We all know that college players (high draft picks) head to AA pretty quick, to where as the same player out o HS has to start in Rookie ball or maybe Low A. All of this matters because of mental and arm maturity. Mentally, college players have had the chance to go away and mature amongst peers the same age, to where a great HS player is around men who are 5yrs older and probably don’t speak the same language half of the time. The physical side is that college players throw a lot more pitches in their longer season and are not watched with hawks eyes from any sort of management and so by the time that they are drafted, they are more ahead bc of the innings pitched and MLB organizations know that. Zack was in the Futures Game in Low A as well and would blow Harvey’s results out of the water today at the Major League level. Watch a game, ask a scout, you’ll get the same comment and point of view. It’s too easy to look and compare stats at different levels and to compare age without looking at the path. I’m done.

Appreciate you sharing your thoughts Jimmy. You make some good points regarding the college player opposed to the H.S. player. In this instance I wasn’t looking to look that in depth but rather a side by side of how they did while in Binghamton.
