Mailbag

With the All-Star break comes a slow news week as well as the symbolic middle of the baseball season. Comment on this post or post on The Real Dirty Mets Blog facebook page with any Mets/baseball related questions, which I will answer. The Mets in contention for a playoff spot, Wright and Dickey in the All Star Game  and the Mets prospects rising and falling. It’s been an exciting year so far for Mets fans. I will come out with a Mailbag post sometime this week provided I get some good questions.

Ask away Ladies and Gentleman and enjoy your All-Star breaks.

What trades, if any, do you see happening?

Listening to Sandy in the SNY booth last night, I get the distinct impression any ‘tweaking’ this team does by the trade deadline will be minor. BP arm, maybe a catcher. No trading of high prospects for any kind of established star.

    1. Is that your read on this too?

    2. Is it the correct move? If say, Justin Upton was available would you think it’s the correct move to trade prospects to acquire someone like him?

How could it not be? A star OF player. Can he play CF? I think he’s a RF, though… At that point you are kicking Bay to the curb and sliding Duda over.

How much longer is he under contract for?

Would be nice, but doubtful. Pitching wins and I can’t see Sandy parting with any on the Gen K2. Though I would trade Familia, as I don’t see him panning out.

upton is signed through 2015, for about 41mill total (including remainder of this year).

so, that qualifies as a building for the future move. You just don’t have to wait for the kid to develop!

I’d say do it (he’s an MVP possibility every year).

Harvey, Familia, + some smaller pieces? Murphy? Turner?

The only true untouchable is Wheeler. I’d like to keep Harvey, but for Upton, it’s worth the risk.

          1. SaltyGary

I would be fine in moving Harvey for him and anything else besides Wheeler. For that kind of player who will be locked into a contract, you absolutely make that more.

          2. Stickguy

he also is relatively cheap (9.75mill or so) in 2013. And only jumps up to 14 in 2014, when conveniently, bay will be gone. Santana off the books too, right? So just Wright and his buddy Upton signed for large $$

      2. srt

I believe he’s a RF too. Not sure if he can or has ever played CF.

If they did acquire him, they would have to move one of Bay or Duda. Of course my preference would be Bay but not sure how feasible that is.

        1. Stickguy

just RF. But, correct, if they do this then one of Bay or Duda is out of a job (at least as a starter).

Could Duda be traded? Possibly. But, in this fantasy scenario which would really be Sandy dropping an atomic bomb on the core, you absolutely have to couple it with just releasing bay.

Duda than moves to LF (needs to happen anyway).

but, if they did get upton, and kept the rest, you could see something like:

          Upton – RF every day
          LF – Bay/Duda sharing time
          CF – Kirk/Hairston sharing time.

of course, this means Spin goes to AAA and Torres just goes away. And no place for baxter. All the more reason to think Duda could also be the odd man out.

Red flag though is he’s having a down year so far this year. Not sure what that’s all about though.

Agree with you on this FO’s philosophy so far. I’m willing to bet they’re not moving Harvey or Wheeler for anyone.

        1. Stickguy

He is only 24, and has a ton of upside potential.

        2. Stickguy

also, not so sure about Harvey (wheeler, no). And if you are going to, this is the kind of guy you make the move for. Young but established as a potential MVP candidate, yet still developing, and under control for 3 years after this one in his prime.

Yes, I take the risk and move Harvey for him.

          1. srt

Hmmmm…..I’d be willing to trade any other prospect not named Harvey and Wheeler.

AA actually has a post and poll up about speculating about this trade this morning:

Some good points in the comments. And I see I’m not the only Met fan not willing to give up Harvey for him.

          2. Stickguy

I don’t go over to AA normally.

but, in general, you want to hang onto young pitching. But remember that post here from last year, about prospect for vet deals, and who wins?

occasionally you have a change for a young veteran building block type. Not often, but if the right guy is available, then it can be worth trading some higher line prospects for him.

that may or may not be this deal (and none of us know exactly what the D Backs want for him) but if Sandy really thinks that over the next 3 years past this one he can be a stud for the Mets, how can you not trade a couple of prospects for him?

  3. Stickguy

question: Does bay have more than the next 2 weeks (Friday through basically the trade deadline) to show revitalization before being axed? Or does he get the rest of the year (assuming he can even stay off the DL) to prove he is totally shot?

as a follow-up, will Terry ever have the stones to admit the obvious, and stick him into a platoon?

  4. SaltyGary

Question: 2012 Mets, Great Mets team or greatest Mets team ever?

    1. NJstuckinTX

      2012? are you ok?

      1. Stickguy

10:26 is just a tad early to be that deep into the brewskies on a Monday.

  5. Stickguy

where was the convo about Upton?

How about, does the D backs want Murphy for their 3B need? Too much to wish for?

Familia + Murphy, and a couple of lower level guys for Upton!

Or maybe have Kirk in their too.

hey, what the heck, it’s something!

    1. NJstuckinTX

      Sign me up for that!

    2. Daniel Stein-Sayles

As amazing as that deal would be, there is absolutely no way the D-Backs agree to that. Even with Uptons down year he is an elite player under 25 with a decent contract with his best years still ahead of him, it would take much more.
