Update 12:08pm – Brad Como of SNY tweeted that “Dillon Gee will be placed on the 15-day DL after doctors found a clot in the artery of his right shoulder.”

Original Post:
Dillon Gee was hospitalized today after what is believed to be the feeling of numbness in his fingers. Adam Rubin of ESPN reports that Mets manager Terry Collins who is at the All Start game said Gee was due to undergo an angiogram.

Rubin’s article goes on to say that Gee’s dad Kevin Gee, was en route to New York.

Saw on Rubin’s blog something about ‘blood in the shoulder’ problem.

Wonder if it’s the same problem Glavine had that year. He missed 2 weeks with that.

Safe to assume Gee is not pitching the first game back on Friday as previously announced.

Looks like we need to trade for a starter now :) All joking aside, nothing but positive thoughts to him.

Good memory on the Glavine Injury, it was a blood clot:

All I could remember with Glavine was it was a similar numbness, he didn’t go on the DL but missed some time and the treatment was aspirin.

        Thanks for the link.

Funny that I remembered Glavine and this type injury, but not Parnell who had a similar problem early last season and went on the DL.

That’s usually the first signs of dementia, right? Remember the distant past but not recent past? LOL.

Parnell had a similar issue last year as well.

He missed more than a month with it

SNY’s Brad Como tweeted that the network has learned that doctors found a blood clot in the artery of Gee’s right shoulder and that Gee will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

AdamRubinESPN: Mets, if they rearranged rotation again, would not need a 5th starter until as late as July 21 because of A-S break and Monday off-day.

AdamRubinESPN: Gee pitched 7/7. He would be eligible to return as soon as 7/23. So if all pitchers stay on standard rest, it’s as little as 1 spot start.

With Gee on the dl my 1st guess is they slide Bautista into that slot.

    1. srt

I could live with that for one start. Maybe we’ll score 10 runs for him.

More than one start? Batista is not the answer, IMO.
Weren’t they already one man short in the BP the week before? If Batista slides into the rotation, they’d better be bringing up 2 arms.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Agreed Batista would be the short term solution.

This certainly sucks, but the good news is they seemed to have caught it early and taken care of it. Better than some of the alternatives (if it breaks loose and decides to travel).

But, the thought of Batista making a start makes me nauseous. I don’t even want him pitching mop-up duty.

so, I guess everyone slides up one day now, and they deal with it when they have to. Hope like heck Johan’s ankle is OK.

and SRT, they were already down a pitcher in the pen, so this will let them call up another BP arm without having to ditch a position guy (just keeping the rotation at 4 four active guys)

Still wondering who goes when Bay comes back (now hearing next Tuesday?)

They should go with a 4-man rotation if possible and limit the need to use Hefner or Batista to just one start.

Also there is no reason why Dickey shouldn’t start Friday. He hasn’t pitched since Friday and is likely not going to pitch more than an inning tonight…

Per Rubin, the juggled rotation coming out of the ASB.

Batista getting the start Wednesday against the Nats. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. Hoping Batista can pull a good start out of his arse like he did against Milwaukee, but I’m not too optimistic as the guy simply doesn’t throw enough strikes. Sorry to hear about Gee. He’s been very good as far as No. 5 starters go.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Considering we still don’t know how long Gee will be out and Batista is scheduled to start next Wednesday. I look at this as anything but locked in stone. As depending on how things go the next week this can still change.

If Gee will not be out long then Batista is just a spot starter and nothing more but if God forbid there are any complications requiring him missing a longer period of time they may go another route.

Also keep in mind we still don’t have any assurance that Santana will be fine to pitch his next start as well.

I saw where Backman was quoted to say he feels Harvey is ready if the Mets need him. Something he had never said earlier this year. How much does that play into the team’s thinking I don’t know but I think Harvey making his debut against a division rival on the road at the start of a pennant race is not putting Harvey in the best position to make his debut let alone best position to succeed.

      1. SaltyGary

There was a video of Backman (I think CerroneBlog posted it) and Backman said Harvey is where they need him to be now. He has better control of off-speed pitches and his command. I don’t want to blow his development or psyche, but hey if he is close to being ready give him a taste now instead of in September if they are in the middle of the WC race.

        1. Stickguy

he has to pitch somewhere. Might as well be there! Sink or swim baby.

my theory also about “rushing” them is every pitcher has a checklist of tasks to master. and once they do, or are close enough that they can finish it up in the majors, call them up so you don’t waste their arm in games that don’t count!

pretty much no pitcher is ever perfectly ready to come up, and there has to be some fine tuning going on (finishing school?), but Harvey will have that now, In September, or next may.

          1. Mr North Jersey

Sink or swim is not how you should handle pitchers you believe can be a big part of your future. Just my opinion.

          2. Stickguy

that was tongue in cheek. But road or home, no big deal. Especially if it is “his confidence will be shattered and he will be ruined forever”. If that is really the case, he has not future anyway.

and 1st game they are going to be a nervous wreck anyway.

          3. Mr North Jersey

I hear you but while what you say has truth in it simply introducing Harvey into the Bigs on the road is not necessary when they have other options.

He would be nervous enough as it is why make it worse by making his debut on the road?

Especially if it is for 1 start.

Like you said he won’t be ruined forever but that doesn’t mean he needs to be placed in that situation regardless.

Mets have been careful not to let situations at the bigs impact how they deal with Harvey, Familia or Wheeler and while that may eventually change if Harvey is only going to be called up for a spot start I don’t think they will do it.

          4. Stickguy

I can’t see that he will come up for 1 start anyway, so that won’t be an issue.

and when he pitches has more to do with when the team needs him to, especially if the alternative is Batista!

    2. Stickguy

they have an off day. And johan is pitching the day before. SO why not just skip his turn, and keep the other 4 guys on normal rest (since Wednesday would be Neise’s regular day to pitch).

I can not think of any rational or sane reason to have the rest of the rotation get extra rest, after just having a bunch of it for the ASB, in order to get the worst pitcher on the team a start?

  8. Connor O'Brien

I’m not sure what I think of this but what about working the rotation so Dickey pitches more often? I’m not sure how it would work, but I’m sure they could figure out something…

    1. Stickguy

well, if they really intend to give batista a start next Wednesday, that would be giving dickey more time between starts, not less.

  9. Connor O'Brien

I wrote up a post for tomorrow about this, my first long opinion piece in a while here… Check back here at 9:30 tomorrow to read it! :)
