Last Night on the Farm – 7/16/12

Last night on the farm we saw Matt Harvey audition for a big league promotion, the B-Mets blew a lead, the Gnats won a slugfest, and the K-Mets played two.  Let’s take a look:

Toledo 4, Buffalo 2

As seen on SNY (unless it was blacked out like at my house), Matt Harvey made what could be his final AAA start before a big league promotion.  He went 6.2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts.  The line looks fine, except for the walks, which are a concern.  If anybody watched the game, feel free to post some thoughts.  Jenrry Mejia took the loss giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 2 innings, without striking out anybody.  The Herd managed just 4 total hits, including an Adam Loewen homer, his 7th in just 21 games for Buffalo this year.  Jason Bay was 0 for 2 with 2 walks and a strikeout, in what could be his final rehab appearance before returning to the Mets.

Trenton 6, Binghamton 5

Darin Gorski didn’t have a great outing, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits through 6 innings, but 3 of those 9 hits were homeruns.  He did strike out 5 and walk none as a silver lining.  Adrian Rosario and Brad Holt each pitched a scoreless frame, but in between Ryan Fraser gave up 2 runs in the 8th and took the loss.  Juan Lagares, Wilmer Flores, and Wilfredo were all 2 for 4.  Reese Havens was 1 for 4 with a 2-run homer, his 8th of the year.

The Lucies were rained out; they will attempt a double-header with Brevard County tonight.

Savannah 9, Lakewood 8

Logan Verrett started and got knocked around a bit, but he toughed it out for 7 innings, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits, including 2 homers; but he did strike out 9 and walk none.  Gilbert Gomez, Cam Maron, Brian Harrison, and Greg Pron all had 2 hits each.  Harrison doubled and drove in 3 runs while Pron and Dustin Lawley each had 2 RBI’s.  Lawley scored on an error in the top of the 9th and that ended up being the game winner.

Brooklyn 7, State College 4

Hansel Robles didn’t have his best outing, 5.2 innings giving up 4 runs (1 earned) with 1 strikeout, but he got the win.  The bullpen took it the rest of the way, surrendering just 1 hit in 3.1 innings.  Brandon Nimmo was one of five Cyclones with a multi-hit game.  Nimmo was 2 for 5 with a double and a walk.  Eudy Pina was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI’s.  Stefan Sabol, Jayce Boyd, and Dimas Ponce all had 2 hits each.

Kingsport 1, Johnson City 0 (game 1, 7 innings)

Before you get your eyes checked rest assure this score is accurate (I double checked).  Somehow the K-Mets not only won a game, but won a pitchers duel.  John Gant threw 5.1 scoreless innings and struck out 6.  Then Shane Bay, who’s having a nice season, pitched the final 1.2 innings with 3 strikeouts and no base runners.  A Julio Concepcion homerun was the only run of the game.

Johnson City 4, Kingsport 1 (game 2, 7 innings)

Cristian Chivilli let up 4 runs in 3 innings, but he did strike out 5 without walking anyone.  Andrew Massie followed with 3 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 4.  Gavin Cecchini was 2 for 3 with a double.  Jeyckol De Leon also had 2 hits.

The game was blacked out for you? I didn’t know any provider would black out SNY games…

I saw the game. Posted some thoughts on the previous thread. I think the walks were the result of he didn’t have great command of his fastball. His off speed pitches though were pretty good, a few were just downright nasty. Mostly ground ball outs, which is what you like to see.

I’ll be interesting to see what the decision is.

Mejia looked downright awful. He had no command of any of his pitches. He’s far from ready for a call up to aid this BP.

Bay looked the same. Still can’t hit RHP. I’m not really looking forward to his return, unless they go with a platoon from the get go.

It seems pretty obvious bay is not ready to face ML pitching, and needs to at minimum work on his timing more.

so why are they again seeming to rush him up before he has to be activated?

Last injury, they rushed him back too soon before showing any life in the rehab games, and in the week before he headplanted the wall, he put up numbers that were so bad, Pelfrey would be embarrassed by them.

actually, maybe rushing bay is part of a sneaky plan. They want to get him back when he will suck, so they have an excuse (as if they did not already!) to DFA him!

OK, that might be reaching a bit…

I dont think they are allowed to keep him down there for an extended period without his approval.

        And IMO, it wouldn’t matter.
Whatever happened to Bay, I don’t think there is any reversing it.

      2. Stick

no, they can’t keep him down indefinitely, but I thought they had 20 days once he starts rehab? I know it is well more than he has gotten, and they have no requirement to bring him up this soon.

I watched the Bisons for the first time ever! I loved it and hope to see more. I agree with SRT about Harvey. I feel it may be too soon to call him up. I don’t think Mejia was able to find the zone consistently. What concerned me most was Jason Bay, and here is why. I think the injuries have taken more of a toll than we think. He is not the same player. I genuinely worry about his health. That being said, I have the utmost faith in our boys, and Terry Collins has a keen ability to motivate and bring out the best in our team.
Do they often broadcast minor league games on SNY?

    1. srt

The only time I’ve seen minor league games broadcast on SNY have been when the Mets have an off day.

Someone who follows the minors regularly might know for sure though.

I agree about bay. I think he may just not be able to do this physically any longer. And seriously, not saying this just because I want him off the team, I think it may be best for him to hang it up before he does permanent damage.

I know players don’t walk away from guaranteed money, but the mets can make that decision easy by releasing him, at which time he can go back to Canada and hang them up while still getting paid.

    Go Go Havens!

And Chivilli and Cecchini on the same team? What a name combo.

    1. Stick

I still have not given up on Havens. And I think they should bump him up to Buffalo.

But, while I think he still makes the majors, at this point I really can’t see him with the mets organization next year.

Hopefully if that is going to be the case, they can work him into a trade this month?

      1. NJstuckinTX

I honestly hope they are patient with Havens, but how patient can they be? They are coming to the 40 man issue with him. And Valdy could fill that spot for a while. A trade does need to happen. Maybe he goes with a couple others for Liriano…

Nimmo with his 4th straight multi-hit game is batting .341 15/H 44/AB over his last 12 games and .563 9/H 16/AB over his last 4 games.
