Last night on the farm only the Cyclones were the only team that was victorious, although we did see another stellar performance from Jeurys Familia, as well as Rainy Lara; although those were balanced out by terrifying performances by Akeel Morris and Chase Huchingson. Let’s take a look at the good and the bad from last night:
Toledo 4, Buffalo 1, 10 innings
Well, look what we have here. For the third consecutive outing, Jeurys Familia was really good. He pitched 8 innings and allowed just 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. The only run came on a solo homer to 35-year-old veteran John Lindsey. Unfortunately for the Herd, in the 10th inning Manny Acosta put runners on and Justin Hampson let them in. Also unfortunate for Buffalo, there was very little offense. Adam Loewen was 2 for 5, Rob Johnson doubled, and Matt Den Dekker took home the golden sombrero.
Trenton 7, Binghamton 1
Cory Mazzoni was solid, but unspectacular in 5 innings of work, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 4. The bullpen didn’t help, as Jeff Stevens let in 3 runs and Adrian Rosario let in 2. It was all singles for the B-Mets offensively. Juan Lagares, Allan Dykstra, and Michael Fisher all had 2 hits. Wilmer Flores was 0 for 4 for the second straight day.
Brevard County 9, St. Lucie 7
Chase Huchingson struggled and was chased (pun intended) out of the game in the 1st inning, letting up 5 runs (3 earned) and recording just 2 outs. Kyle Allen gave up 3 more, which put the game out of reach despite a comeback attempt from the Lucies offense. Late in the game Adam Kolarek struck out 2 in a scoreless inning; why he is not in Binghamton yet I have no idea. Alonzo Harris was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, an RBI, and a walk. Danny Muno, Blake Forsythe, and Richard Lucas all had 2 hits. Lucas blasted a homer and drove in 3 runs. Cory Vaughn was 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and 2 walks.
Brooklyn 7, Hudson Valley 3
Rainy Lara put together another solid outing that included a lot of strikeouts. Lara struck out 7 and walked none in 5 innings, while giving up 3 runs (2 earned) to earn his 4th win of the year. David Wynn threw 3 shutout innings in relief and Tyler Vanderheiden pitched a perfect 9th inning. Kevin Plawecki was 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and a walk. Eudy Pina and Jeff Reynolds both homered. Brandon Nimmo doubled (his 8th of the year) and drove in 2 runs.
Bristol 10, Kingsport 7
The nightmare continues for Akeel Morris, who lasted just 2.1 innings and gave up 7 runs on 5 hits, while failing to strike out a batter. In 5 starts this year, Morris has put up a 9.74 ERA. The offense showed up some, with 8 of the 9 starters getting at least 1 hit. Gavin Cecchini hit his 6th double of the year.

not a good day at all for the organization.
But damned, Famila. Way to jack up that trade value!
and not sure where I saw this yesterday (so apologies if I “borrowed” it from someone here), but as to Harvey, a fine idea was formulated that they intend to just give him 2 more AAA starts to continue fine tuning, with the intent of bringing him up on the West Coast. Far away from the NY media.
makes sense. Get started with less distractions, in relative pitchers parks vs. weak offenses. If you want to get someone acclimated to the majors successfully, that sounds like a good way to do it.
That also gives Batista 2 starts max to prove that he is a crappy mop up man that needs to be out of MLB. I really don’t think he is going more than 3 innings at this point anyway, so these starts should have gone to heffner anyhow.

I heard something similar to that. It makes a lot of sense in that he went 12 days without throwing except for the ASG before his last start, so at least 2 or 3 starts to get back in rhythm and shake off any rustiness, especially with regards to his control, which needs to be as sharp as possible when he gets to the big leagues. But is the media really that much less on the road than at home? I don’t know about that, but probably less pressure not being in front of the hometown fans.

Why do we keep saying that Hefner is a better option than Batista? The ERA’s are significantly different. Miguel has 4.00 ERA as a starter and Hefner is close to 7.

IDK, maybe because Met fans are just tired of seeing Batista fail so watching someone else fail in the same spot would at least be novel for a couple of starts….
Seriously, Patrick Flood seems to agree with you. Between Harvey, Batista, Hefner and Schwinden he thinks Batista gives them the best shot right now.

what is the best you can possibly hope for out of Batista? 5 innings if a miracle occurs, but more like 3, stretching into the 4th?
I just don’t consider him to be a viable SP now. He is a long/mop up man being pressed into a spot start, so you basically have to look at Saturday as a BP game.
and wasn’t hefner’s SP stats skewed by that game where he sat for an hour+ rain delay, then got hammered after that?
Hef had 3 starts (cue the SSS music). SD< 3.2/6 ERs (the rain delay game).
that was followed by back to back quality starts (6 IP for each) against washington and philly, with a total of 1 walk.
then when Terry decided to use him like a RP (late June), he had 4 consecutive scoreless outings. all 1 inning or more, with no walks.
He was 2 BBs on the year. Batista can't get 3 outs without giving up more BBs than that.
Hell with 5th starter, they should be looking at the freaking guy to be the closer!
and that my friend is why I think Hefner should be getting this start instead of Batista. He does not suck as bad, and he is actually a starting pitcher.

I’m in agreement with you about Batista vs. Hefner.
If they’re going to leave Harvey down there for a few more starts, I’d just assume they started Hefner first over Batista.
Then again, if Batista is the starter than Terry won’t be tempted to use him in late inning/high leverage situations any more. Maybe a silver lining to that cloud…….

Good to see Familia getting it together down there.
I saw something mentioned last night about possibly putting Mejia back in the ST. Any truth to that?
I know he’s been awful in the BP.
Stick: as to your point above about giving Batista about 2 starts max…..I’ve been reading the same thing. Actually thought this probably was the plan when they announced they weren’t bringing Harvey up here for Saturday’s game. I figured they want to get him a few more starts before bringing him up.
I know one thing: If TC doesn’t stop bringing in Batista late in games in high leverage situations, I’m gonna lose my mind. I have no idea why he keeps going to the same well that never gets it done over and over again.

old geezers look out for each other?
Either that, or he does not trust his other options, or they have been getting overused lately.
so cut batista, as the next step in getting a better well to dip into.

Batista in his early forties is pitching in major league baseball games while you at the age of 10 are not. So he’s in better shape than you are. TC’s probably in better shape than you are. Watch what you say young whippersnapper.

I think what you may have seen is Paul Depodesta’s interview with Adam Rubin where he said that Mejia may go back to starting. If that happens, then they’d pretty much be giving up on him helping the ML BP this year. I think they’ll wait at least a couple more weeks before doing that, but I think it could be best for him in the long run. He’s coming off TJ and guys sometimes aren’t back to 100% for 18 months, so it might be best to let him start for Buffalo in August, get some more innings to develop and maybe get some starts in the bigs in September under the right circumstances.

Now that you mention it, yes, that’s where I saw it.
Just seems to me that Mejia is having a hard time wrapping his brain around being a BP arm vs. starter.
If the plan was to see if he could help out the big club this second half out of the BP, and give him a chance at starting again next spring – that’s fine. But maybe he sees it as the organization giving up on him being a starter. I really have no idea though as I’m not privy to what was discussed with Mejia.

I don’t know why you guys are so keen on trading Familia. He’s finally pitching well and his future is almost certainly in the bullpen, so if he keeps it up he could be an important bullpen piece next year.

I have a feeling he’s not going to harness all that talent. He’s got a high value in the organization, but i would prefer to hold onto Mejia (and Harvey and Wheeler, obviously). In order to get things, you have to give. And I’d be happy giving Familia vs the others I would want to hold onto.
And yes, he could become something special. He also could continue to dazzle and disappoint all at the same time.

Tejada has a 1.4 oWAR compared to Reyes’s 1.6 in half the games. oWAR calculations include plate appearances.
I am just saying…
