What else can be said? Good start by Niese, down most of the game, lack of timely hitting when they could have won and left it to the bullpen for too many innings. The Mets were down most of the game and came back to tie 3-3 in the 9th with chances there to win it as well. A botched call at 1B stunted their chances and it became a battle of the pens, Mets lost. After getting in and out of trouble in the 11th with a lead off walk the same fate would not bestow Ramirez in the 12th. Ramon allowed back to back singles, got the next two hitters including Kemp before allowing 5 runs (yeah, that will hurt your ERA in a hurry). So the Mets get ready for 3 games vs Washington trying to climb back above .500. But hey the good news is the Mets inserted a guy with even worse numbers than Batista in the rotation so that should be fun. Now back to the standard whining about either Terry or the front office.

16 hits, 3 runs. That’s not going to get it done.
It’s official: this team just isn’t good enough to compete as currently constructed.

I believe the more interesting aspect is that in spite of this clubs excellent attitude (never say die, etc.) under Terry versus the country club atmosphere under Jerry the performance level is about the same. We see a good first half followed by a terrible second half. The leadership qualities possessed by Terry and the positive clubhouse chemistry is extremely important in a sport like football where you only play 16 regular season games. It has a much more limited effect in baseball over a 162 game season.

Good clubhouse atmosphere is only going to take you so far.
First it was the BP, then the SP with it’s injuries, now the offense is faltering somewhat.
Too many platoons b/c we really don’t have a solid OF.
So many holes now is going to make it hard to finish at .500, let alone above it.
This next stretch looks to be brutal b/c of the SP. I’m assuming it’s going to be:
Dickey/Niese/Young/Hefner/Harvey ?
Since I’m assuming it’s Harvey who will probably struggle somewhat when brought up,
Hefner is just isn’t that good,
Young who has a problem pitching beyond the 5th…
It’s just not gonna be pretty.

Terry might actually be the perfect manager for the Marlins.

“Now back to the standard whining about either Terry or the front office.”
You’ve spent so much time at MMO that you’re confusing your websites.

It isn’t just there just more likely. It’s all over Met land. Time to blame the players.

but over there, they should change the name to the He man Sandy haters club. Joe finally has his wish. the Mets hit a rough patch so he can make it all shots at Sandy all the time.
also, and this might be wordsmithing, but you can’t (or shouldn’t) “blame” the players. you can blame the FO or the manager, but the players are what they are.
maybe say point at the players, who are what they are, and all of them seem to be busting their asses to try and win. Having less talent than the other team is a fact of life, not something to blame them for.

I suppose Stick but why is it that every year they tank right now? To me they are just as much to blame as anyone else.

At the very least, barring the radio and bloggers complaining, it should be an interesting week and a half with the upcoming trade deadline.

At this point I see the Mets either conducting a fire sale (which could still happen because of the Wilpons still on going, although apparently improving, financial problems) or keeping the status quo.

well, the fire sale is not going to do anything for the wilpons financial situation. They don’t have enough to trade.
first, dumping what they can will not help revenue this year. Never mind ticket sales (seasons) for next year. so not making money there.
and they don’t have guys making enough of a salary that can be dumped without eating most of the $$. Unless you think they are trading Wright and/or Dickey? That I don’t see.
Bay is untradeable (but I think he will just get DFA’d in August if things continue to go downhill). Santana, they aren’t getting salary relief from him, and man, that could freak out the fans. And trading Wright at this point is like declaring war, and giving up on ever seeing fans again at Citi.
so, can you get enough for the disposable parts (Byrdak, Hairston, etc.) to make it worthwhile? Wanna roll the dice on something a little more high profile, like Murphy?
I would love to see something bold that could bring back a future building block (Like Upton), but I don’t see this do-nothing FO coming up with a bold plan like that.

That’s my feeling. You aren’t getting much in return, most likely, for the expendable parts. And unless the highly illogical happens and the Mets put forth the best package for a Garza or Upton or Whomever the Marlins are selling off, no real upgrade looms on the horizon. Unless bowled over in the offers, I see little to nothing happening, minus the waivers post deadline. And honestly, unless this team is bringing in a Garza or an Upton, all other moves will be shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.
Stay the course, Sandy.

Damn, where’s my fiddle and Nero toga?
Hey, at least Harvey will provide something to look forward to this week. Hopefully some more ‘Spin AB’s someplace.
