Mets Aren’t Buying What You Are Selling

According to Adam Rubin:

Sandy Alderson suggested Monday that the Mets are unlikely to become sellers at the trading deadline. The GM also implied that while the Mets may no longer become aggressive buyers with 2012 in mind, it does not entirely preclude a trade materializing. ”

Here comes the lunatic fringe again full force as now Sandy is no longer labeling the Mets as “buyers” due to their poor play.   Of course not.  A lot can change in 9 games.  Had the Mets been able to play slightly above .500 then the situation may be different.  They didn’t and now they face the fate of that.  What I don’t get is how the front office was supposed to improve the team enough to make up for the loss of 3 SP, an awful and unproductive OF and a failed pen at the trade deadline, while also not losing any of our best prospects.  I guess they really do expect Sandy to be a genius.   Again, he’s here to be the adult in the room and I am glad to know he is staying the course.

Regardless I feel he should make a trade for a pen ARM. It is needed no matter what and can be done without giving up much. Make a move, the team has worked hard so try and plug a hole. There were way too many holes to fill before the starters fell, but make a move and help the boys out.

I agree. If there is someone they can get for picking up some salary, and a couple of minor (semi) prospects, then do it. They might need a miracle of sorts to make the playoffs, but at least give them some help.

It might end up being cosmetic, but throwing a bone to the fans (and players) can have LT benefits to more than offset the investment.

Good point real about the lunatic fringe as you like to call them. They interpret everything to fit what they already believe (about Sandy).

when you actually read his comments, they are perfectly logical and rational, and not quite the hyperbole that some posters want to make out of it.

I think it’s a bit much to label an entire group of fans asking for a trade as the lunatic fringe. Would I be looking to make a trade, well, no but I don’t classify all those pining for a move to be made to be off their rocker. They want the team to be improved I can’t knock that. Lot’s of teams make move’s of various sizes just to mix things up or get milb depth etc. Heck the Skankee’s just picked up an aging Ichiro and they’re on the top of the heap. I think the time you’re spending on other sites is skewing perspective a bit. I myself don’t believe that the FO ever was going to do anything anyway and I didn’t have a problem with that either given the lack of organizational depth to talent ratio. What I’m interested in is when we get to the off season if the same group stating against a trade now will be seeking a trade in the off season. Should be no difference, same lack of talent in the cupboard in the winter so I wouldn’t expect much than either.

There’s another aspect that bloggers that don’t live in NYC or the LI, Westchester or Northeast NJ suburbs of the City don’t take into account. Just as Stick lives in Phillies land and suffered during the period that the Phillies excelled and laughed at the Mets, people here have to put up with the Yankees and their uncontrollable laughter over the Mets’ plight. The Mets are too the Yankees as the St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles) were to the St. Louis Cardinals, the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves) were to the Boston RedSox, the Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland A’s) were to the Philadelphia Phillies, etc. The Mets are the inept little brother forever doomed by the incompetence of their ownership. It wears on these fans and they take it out in their silly rants on other websites.

Anyway my real rooting passion, the NY Football Giants, are preparing to start a new season in the NFL. It’s amazing but so many of my fellow Giants fans are also Yankees fans and I’m smart enough not to reveal I follow the Mets in baseball. But those that do know I root for the Mets actually express their sympathy and wonder how I can root for a team owned by buffoons. I reply it teaches me humility.

Fine with me. We’re not going anywhere this year.

And like the various opinion posts on here this week. Between here and AA, it’s the only calm, rational Mets blogs I can find lately.

I don’t want a bone or a cookie. I want a good meal and chances are that is not happening this year. So salary dumps? Sure but those are not happening as much with so mant teams in it. Trades for the future? Sure. Who you giving up. My issue with the lunatic fringe is they see only one side and damn the future… Win now. That wouldn’t happen this year if you added Dempster , Street and Upton.

    Beato sent down for Harvey.

Good. Beato is awful. Other than like a 2 week stretch last year, he’s never proven he can pitch up here.

After the other night and tonight, not sure if I ever want to see him in this BP. Sure Ruben was charged with an error but Beato just came right back and gave up some more runs anyway. He’s awful.

so, duda dodged a bullet? Doesn’t that put them short a man in the pen again? I can’t keep up.

      no loss though.

      1. Stick

just did the math, and that still leaves them with a 6 man pen. With Ramon being one of them, that is really too thin.

but, until Franky is ready to come off the DL, not sure who else they would call up for a few games?

and considering that Hefner and Harvey are pitching back to back, they need all the arms they can get out there.

      2. srt

        LOL, neither can I.

        Elvin
        Edgin
        Parnell
        Byrdak
        Rauch
        Ramirez

Yeah, looks to be a man short again.
With Harvey and Hefner pitching this week, could get dicey.

Think they said Baxter will be back possibly this weekend so expect it to be at the expense of one of those OFs. Wish it could be Bay.

And FF should be back NLT a week (if no setbacks) so that puts the pen back at 7 arms, if they don’t send an arm down for him.

Problem is we’ve got too many OFs with too many platoons with too many not producing. Turner would be expendable IMO but they’ll never cut him.

        1. Stick

they have to make another move to get another arm up, and it needs to be someone that can be a long man.

Hampson maybe? and either duda down, or decide his hammy is not responding well enough and he needs that time off?

get someone up ASAP, and figure out what to do about it next week when (if) Franky gets back.

          1. srt

If Duda isn’t hurt, I’d just assume send him down to get some batting instruction. If they put him on the DL, it really helps no one.

And see my post below. Apparently FF has a setback – again….

  7. srt

Now some Met fans want TC fired and Teufel to take over?
    Yup…this is all Terry’s fault.

    1. Stick

saw the calls for wally picking up, but nothing for teufel.

I do think though that very likely after this year, Terry decides to hang it up. Just a hunch.

    Per Rubin:

Frank Francisco scratched from Tuesday’s appearance with Brooklyn. Had discomfort in right knee and required a shot.

Seriously, you just cannot make this stuff up.

    1. Stick

write him off for the year. Just call up someone else and send down an OF.

    2. Stick

wait, misread that. his knee, not his oblique or whatever he is on the DL with?

    3. gategem

It might help if some time in the future FFF actually concentrating on getting himself in shape. He is supposed to be an athlete after all.

      1. Stickguy

well, at lest he isn’t one of those guys that makes themselves all muscle bound, lifting too many weights.

  9. Stick

and can this day get worse?

Phils pulled off another miracle comeback in the 9th. down 6-3, they end up winning 7-6, thanks to our old friend K Rod. might as well trade for him, he would fit right in.

But, maybe it teases them into keeping their FAs to be for the stretch run!

I hate them with a passion. and want them to tank so bad.

    1. gategem

Your Phillies paranoia is getting a little scary. :-)

      1. Stickguy

it’s not paranoia. it’s an obsession.

  10. Stickguy

well, now we know who the BP reinforcement is.

Mr. 2nd half himself, Manny! It’s Acostolypse time again!

Just have to wait and see who goes down. Looks like Duda shouldn’t have gotten to confident after Beato went, maybe?
