After last night’s extra innings loss I just have one thing to say- IT’S BEGINNING TO GET UGLY !!!!
I do not know if this team is tired, dejected over the loss of both Dillon Gee and Johan Santana or they have just plain given up. I hope for their sake it’s not the last the three theories because this team has built up so much goodwill with the fan base that I can’t see them just taking a dive in the second half.
For the most part the Mets offense has looked flat, the bullpen has looked ( with the exception of a couple of relievers) putrid, and the starting rotation looks as if they are pitching scared. I don’t think that Sandy Alderson making a big trade will get this team off it’s current slide – besides who of immense trade value are we willing to trade – and will a rival G.M be willing to give back a more than servicable player in return ?
I say that for the most part this team should stay pat – unless a offer that is too good to refuse is mae – or too stockpile players for next season.
Don’t get me wrong I have not given up on the Mets finishing over .500 this season – but at this point it woud take the stars to align just right for this team to make the post season.
And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
Middle reliever from the ’93 season, Jeff Kaiser is 52 (1960) . Kaiser appeared in 3 games for the Mets that season. In 4.2 innings,he gave up 6 earned runs, which translated to a E.R.A of 11.57. He would be put on waivers that April – and claimed by the Reds.
The New York Mets traded reserve catcher/ outfielder, Hawk Taylor to the California Angels for minor leaguer, Don Wallace on July 24, 1967.
The New York Mets signed free agent shortstop, Melvin Mora on July 24, 1998. Mora would wow the Mets fans as Rey Ordonez’ replacement when he was felled by a leg injury in ’00. He would have made an excellent everyday replacement – but the Mets instead opted to trade him to Baltimore for Mike Bordick .
Mo Vaughn suggests that instead of watching the Mets lose – we should start watching Taboo on NGC. His reason – Taboo is least likely to make us sick to our stomach !!!!

Yea, you almost cant blame the offense for looking the way they did last night. You can only take so many of those types of losses by the pen with stride. These guys are tired and going into the dog days just going through the motions. I expect the offense to still put up a fight though, cant say the same with the pen.

screw that. The offense going through the motions is OK< so why not the pen? Shouldn't they say "well, the SP kept failing early, so we re tired?"
besides, the core pen guys have been getting ti done, and holding the other team into extras. So giving the offense plenty of chance to win, by scoring 1 lousy run. They have just been getting killed by the one bad inning by the 5th 6th or 7th man.
Beato is down, and Ramon had actually been pitching well, but should never ever get a 2nd inning.
Also, last night again (and this happened a lot, particularly to Parnell) the defense absolutely killed the pen guys. When you do your job by getting an easy GB that should be a DP, and instead it is 2 on 0 outs, it can get demoralizing!

How many double plays did Spin ground into last night? Three?
Someone needs to teach that boy that hacking isn’t going to get him a permanent ticket in the majors.

there have been many more games the offense picked up the bullpen than the other way around. Their job is still to get outs and most of the time with runners on. Last I checked they had the worst bullpen in the majors, not offense.

“there have been many more games the offense picked up the bullpen ” Depending on what you mean by picked up that is not necessarily accurate.
Coming into this home-stand for example the Mets had 16 games this season where they entered the start of the 7th with the game tied or with a lead that they lost.
How many of those games did the offense come back to pick them up for the win?

‘I say that for the most part this team should stay pat – unless a offer that is too good to refuse is mae – or too stockpile players for next season.’
Couldn’t agree more, Rusty.
Too many holes to salvage this season. They’re either going to do it with the horses they currently have – or more likely not.
Making a deal for the future however is always a good idea. We’re still ‘building’, as Sandy puts it.

Granted, the wheels fell off, but if Tejada doesn’t muff that play, they still could be playing…

All season this team has been fighting tooth and nail to overcome the massive deficiencies of their bullpen, defense, and inability to get the ‘big hit’. At some point, that’s all going to take its toll on you. They’ve exhausted their energy by overcoming their lack of talent and ability. This is the result.
