The Mets have just sat around and let this get bad. I understand it’s tough since Dillon Gee and Johan Santana went on the DL and R.A. Dickey has not pitched well at all, but you see a team like the Yankees get Ichiro, a team like the New York Rangers get Rick Nash. Sure you have to give up assets, but to get something you have to give up something and when your 10 games up and first in the wild card don’t you want to hold the fort down? I mean their has got to be some type of bullpen help out somewhere. The Yankees get creative and make trades.
This is the same team who thought Jonathan Broxton and Joe Nathan were too expensive yet both are all stars. Sandy Alderson I understand doesn’t want to give up prospects, but you can get creative I am sure. I almost feel it’s too late now for this team and it really stinks because this team had something special going. Now the team doesn’t hit and the rotation can’t pitch anymore. Add to the fact that is the worst bullpen in baseball and Terry Collins is now in a tough spot. Now you send down Lucas Duda since he has been a huge disappointment this year. And you switch Pedro Beato for Manny Acosta when neither can pitch in the Majors. They are asking Matt Harvey, who I feel is not ready yet, to save this season.
So much is being relied on Matt Harvey and people will blame Terry Collins, but it’s not his fault. Look at what he has to work with. Dan Warthen in my mind needs to go as well. The bullpen has been surreal this year and should be embarrassed. I mean back to back collapses in extra innings I never saw that before. Will see if the Mets have anything left, but this ship is sinking. Doesn’t it feel like a long time ago when Johan Santana threw that no hitter. Things have changed in a hurry.

Using the Yankees’ pickup of Ichiro is ridiculous. Picking up a former star that’s been hit badly by age is an Omar move that kills teams (the only saving grace is the Yanks gave up very little instead of an Omar-sized contract).
“Now the team doesn’t hit and the rotation can’t pitch anymore. Add to the fact that is the worst bullpen in baseball”
And how is going knee-jerk and “getting creative” solve all of these problems? I know Mets fans want to see bullpen help, but with all of these problems, no bullpen help in the world can transform this team back into the faux-contender they were in the first half. Relax.

well, if it was Omar, he would have signed him to a 2 year extension after he had a 3 it game.

you can’t really create a market that is not there (meaning you need willing sellers too). Unless, of course, you want to pay top $.
Ever buy a new model car that had all kinds of buzz? You want the first one out? Well, prepare to pay the “additional dealer markup” and to get the $1,200 pin stripes!
I actually agree though that trying to get some BP help earlier was needed. However, they did, it just came from internal to the system. I happen to like Edgin a lot!
Not much any team can do really when you lose 3/5 of your rotation. You are going to see some emergency back-ups or wet behind the ears rookies.
Hopefully in the off season though the FO is able to do some serious remaking of the team, clearing some more dead wood, and converting what they have in excess into some missing parts (at least on the MiL level).
If you want something bold to happen now, and assuming Wheeler is off limits, they almost have to trade a guy like Murphy.

“Not much any team can do really when you lose 3/5 of your rotation.”
That’s not exactly true. The Yankees lost Michael Pineda (the youngster they got from Seattle that possesses incredible talent), Pettitte, CC (now back) and some others that I can’t recall and are still running away with their division.

well, the deepest pockets will always skew the results, and they I belive were winning despite the rotation.
but even there, you end up reaching for a MiL that is not quite ready, talking a dude out of retirement that did not pitch last year, or recycling ancient injured carcasses.
then you pummel your opponents to death with cheap HRs.

Cheap Home Runs, I think not. They hit some majestic shots when they played at Citi. They’ve hit 82 round trippers at home but they have also hit 70 homeruns on the road. I don’t like the Yankees but I have to give them their due. From a financial and baseball perspective (and they go hand-in-hand) they’re the best run franchise in baseball. That said baseball needs a salary cap to prevent a successful large market team from swamping a successful small market team.

Speaking of the Yankees…
Saw this on WFAN:
With A-Rod Out, Could Wright Fill Void For Yankees?
Oh boy…..If this FO would even think about trading Wright to the Yankees right about now, it would be a full fledged revolt by the fans.

that did seem like Yankee fan entitlement mentality to me.
though realistically, yankees mught be able to supply what the mets need (like a catcher)

to be clear, and of course can not say if he tired or not, but Sandy needed to be trying everything to find actual pen help before the ASG, as soon as Franky went down.. regardless of every other issue with the team, that was a glaringly obvious hole!
But, you can’t get crazy. Harper in the DN has a piece this AM that there best trade chip is Murphy (a fair premise), but he is talking about getting a 28 YO MR from the padres (Gregorson?) because he had a couple of good months (4 ER since 5/20). For a .300 hitting 2B. Ah, no.
actually, there is another guy in the same boat. Had a rough start, but since 5/28 (2 months now), only 5 ER allowed, for a 2.87 ERA, and a .613 OPS allowed. And a WHIP below 1.0.
Of course, that is Jon Rauch, so no need to trade for him.

I know it’s tough but now is not the time or the season to make panic moves. Remember with an added wild card so many teams think they are in it. That lessens the trade pool and drives up the prices.
Again no talent traded for mediocre players on a long shot.

so take on a salary dump for mediocre talent back. That is a tired and tured trade deadline practice, perfected on the other side of NYC.

How many have you seen? I am telling you with this additional wild card even salary dumps want talent . I think that is why Hernandez isn’t here.

I’m still trying to figure out that Hanley trade. Might have been a salary dump as well as a way to get rid of what once was the ‘golden boy’, but dang…..I didn’t see all that much talent coming back to Miami in that trade.
A SP that may be credible some day and another that looks to be a middle reliever.

Let’s offer Miami Duda and Murphy for Reyes – and talk Loria into sending some cash for Reyes’ contract. He’s so focused on winning here and now as opposed to restocking the farm. Heck, throw a couple of lower prospects in there to entice him.
An IF of Wright/Reyes/Tejada/Ike? Nice.
Of course that does nothing to solve the OF problem.
Hey, maybe we could pry Stanton away from them too!

other teams moving though. NL east shaking up.
TRS, per our discussion last night in the dugout, I guess we shall be seeing how the Phils will fill out the roster now that hamels is locked up. Could be mostly status quo, or if they do have to free up more cash, Pence or Lee are possible casualties. But with Amaro’s MO, expect a big extension soon for vicky!
and it did not take long for the Miami fire sale to get into full swing. I certainly hope Reyes has some other buddies down there to go clubbing with.

Yeah Reyes is stuck and no one is taking his contract. Johnson and other big names will be moved too and attendance will be cut in half.

No guarantee Reyes remains a Marline long either.
Just saw this quote from Loria linked over on MLBTR on the Hanley trade:
“We had to do something,” Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). “The machine was sputtering. It’s too good a baseball team and for some reason it didn’t seem to be operating on all cylinders from the beginning of the season.”

I, for one, am glad we’ve got a different mindset in the FO for a change. This kind of thinking from the last FO is why we’re where we’re at right now.
This FO has a plan and I’m content to see how it plays out. We’ll need to be making moves this off season (OF, for one as we basically don’t have one) and it will be interesting to see how they go about it.

Harold Robbins over on MLB.TV said in March something like he’d bet the ranch that Hanley would not be wearing a Marline uniform come end of July Looks like he was spot on with that.
Just goes to show – as most Met fans know – throwing money at top talent is not the entire answer. You have to look at the entire team overall, making sure talent you’re bringing over is worth the money and the right fit. Talk about panic mode early……they trade for Carlos Lee not even a month ago, now they’ve got him on the trading block. Some Met fans complain about this FO but seriously…..do they really want what the Marlins did this year? How did that work out for them? And Miami has one of the lowest rated farm systems to boot.

Well, I don’t exactly know as we’ve only heard the overall mindset which is build a team that can compete every year.
Last year was obvious – had to wait wait for Perez and Castillo’s money to come off the books. Unfortunately, just in time for payroll to be slashed some 40-50 MIL, thank you Madoff and the Wilpons.
The minors are not bereft of talent as most were reporting a few years ago but most of the good talent appears to be in the low minors – Harvey/Wheeler aside. So that will take time. In the interim, the way I see it there will have to be some trades made this off season as we really don’t have an OF at all. That’s for a start.
I’ve been willing to be patient, considering the situation this team was in when SA took over. I still don’t believe the money issues are over – far from it – no matter what Metsie keeps trying to tell us (lol).
I do expect some moves to be made this off season to improve this team. If that doesn’t happen, I won’t be a happy camper and they really better have a damn good reason why.

I’m thinking Harvey and Wheeler will be mainstays in the rotation but it’s not looking good for Familia at all. And I’ve got my doubts Mejia will pan out as a starter either.
There are some other arms in AA and A that might be good but doesn’t look like any of them will be ready for next year. Could be some are used for trade chips to acquire talent we’re lacking elsewhere – like the OF.

now we are getting somewhere.
Harvey and wheeler, they will both be in the rotation next year. So if you are building around them in their embryonic stage + Neise, then they can get started.
But, if you are looking at them needing a few years seasoning and adding in someone from the Fulmer/Tapia/Monteo level, trade Wright in the off season, because he will be 40 by the time the team is ready to compete!
