Final Score: Diamondbacks 6, Mets 3
Player Of The Game: Ike Davis- 4-for-4, 3 home runs
Goat Of The Game: Chris Young- 4 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 68 pitches (45 strikes)
Discussion Points:
- Chris Young… yikes! Young has been so consistent, allowing more than three runs only once this season, but tonight was just bad.
- Ike Davis hit three home runs. I’m not really sure what to think of this because his batting average is still very low… He is now the ninth player in Mets history to hit three home runs in a single game.
- Ramon Ramirez pitched two solid relief innings for the Mets tonight. Manny Acosta was also decent.
- Ruben Tejada had a nice game as well. He was 2-for-5 with a walk.
- This is a tough loss to swallow. The Mets really needed to take three of four from Arizona. Hopefully they can take the fourth game tomorrow and head out to San Francisco with some momentum.

Kind of hard to win games when even though Ike hits 3 HRs they’re solo ones – in part because 15 of the 27 outs are strikeouts. Not many on base when he’s hitting those bombs.
Here’s hoping we can at least get a win tomorrow and at least get the split.

Oh these games have just been painful. Tonight Young can only go 4 innings and gives up 6 runs. Failing to give a struggling offense a chance and forces the team to go to the pen after 4 innings.
Now with Wright in the midst of a slump Ike Davis at least has continued to get his hits with an impressive Homerun show tonight (nice job Ike) but Bay and Kirk are just struggling so bad right now. That 1 inning when the Mets had 1st and 2nd with no outs and Murphy hit that shot deep to straight away center and it was caught for the 1st out with Bay and Kirk to follow. It was hard not to expect that the inning would end right there.
It’s not for a lack of effort. They fight every inning but they just can’t get over the hump like they did during the 1st half of the season.
On a positive note I don’t think I can ever get tired of watching the moon shots Ike hits for HR’s. Freaking awesome. Hate to say it but Putz’s Splitter was just disgusting. Props to Tejada just to get a single and get on base in that 9th.
Props to the pen for at least keeping it within a swing of the bat to tie it then later to take the lead.
Dickey is on the hill as the Mets look to at least split this 4 game series which right now would be a huge step in my opinion.

I haven’t seen much of this series, but it looks like the starting pitching has been fairly mediocre. That’s not gonna win you many games, especially when the offense is doing nothing. So much for “Omar’s team” being something to drool over.
You can only fight and claw your way for so long before a lack of talent catches up with you. It was really hard to expect the stellar starting pitching of the first half to continue all season, and now we’re seeing that in action. It’s getting really tough to watch.

So many people have pointed out TC’s leadership skills and the Mets outstanding attitude as being the key to the first half success story. Balderdash. It was the Mets starting pitching coupled with pure luck that resulted in all those two out runs that only meant something because of the starting pitching. Show me an extremely talented ballclub with outstanding pitching that plays hard on the field while everybody hates each other off the field and I’ll show you a winner. Sitting around a campfire and singing kumbaya in baseball is not a prerequisite for winning. What can and does hurt is if the team starts to expect to lose and a negative collective subconscious, if there is such a thing, takes hold. But sans talent the opposite will not cause a baseball team to win.
Another change that we are seeing is that word has apparently spread through the league that the best way to pitch against the Mets is to go right at the hitters and challenge them. The Mets offense revolved around a patient, work the pitcher and try to draw walks approach and pitchers instead of painting the corners are now going right at the Mets hitters.

This is the wisest comment I have read on a Mets blog all week.

Thank you. When I graduated engineering school our slogan was “Yesterday ise couldn’t spell engunare and today I be one” so anything I write that is vaguely coherent is by pure accident.

Very wise, Gate. None of that comment can be argued against.

well, outside of 3 Ike ABs, not a game I regret missing.
Young is really starting to look like a SP that can’t break a pane of glass.

well, never good when the Mets don’t win, but at least the Phils lost again, so there was a small measure of good news on the day.
And I see the WS picked up Loriano. That would have been interesting to see the Mets do, as a move for the future.
2 days until the trade deadline. Will be interesting to see which teams are buying and selling.

If you still consider the Mets as a WC contender then the Braves winning is not good news.
I’ve seen slow pitch leagues where they throw harder than Young does now.
Football training camps are in full swing and I hate the Cowboys, RedSkins and particularly the Eagles.
