Never mind the decision to throw a ball to first
when you have no shot…..when Niese doesn’t have his best stuff he doesn’t seem to know how to compensate. Still a work in progress.

Ronnie after the game very blunt on Bay. Said when Baxter comes back, it should be Baxter and Hairston platooning in LF and Bay on the bench, period.
He went on to talk about when he was 35, he knew he was done. Batters he absolutely owned were hitting line drives off him left and right. Said his mantra was every time he took the mound, he was going to give his team his best effort to win. When he realized at 35 he could no longer do it, it was over.
Said if you don’t realize that and walk away, you’re being a hypocrite.

Kind of interesting there. Every one knows he’s done but the Mets won’t cut him? Want him to walk away so they can save next year’s salary.

Unfortunately, it seems every time you think Niese is ready to take a step forward he disappoints you. There are some that compare Niese to Jerry Koosman and I’m sure that there must be some useless metrics that may even support the argument but to those of us that saw Koos pitch know that Niese doesn’t compare in or out of jail. :-)

Maybe that is it, when Baxter comes back, Bay goes. Or, Hairston is traded and Baxter takes his spot.

Would Bay for Soriano make any sense? It prob doesn’t, but there are little to none in scenarios where Bay is traded. He is just going to have to be cut. Que the “Truly Old Bay” posts…

    3. Hazmet

My prediction last week was that Bay will retire or be released by the end of this road trip. Book it.

I think it’ll play out that he retires based on the recent concussion history and it will be called a day by the time they take the field for their next home game.

      1. Hazmet

All that being said, he did make a fine catch to get Niese out of that disasterous inning. Like an old war dog he’s still trying but he’s just shot. Running back to the dugout after the catch he almost tripped over his own feet at one point. The dude’s not right with the concussions, etc – he needs to retire for his own well being let alone the interests of the club.

      2. NJstuckinTX

Does he get the remainder of his salary if he retires? If not, then he ain’t retiring.

        1. Stickguy

no, but if he argues it is medical (post concussion syndrome?) he might.

Entirely possible he works out a settlement with the team to pay him off at some % on the $ to retire?

Otherwise, the team can just bench him. Only a month until rosters expand. he can be the last man on the bench. What Q used to be.

not a chance in hell he is back next year. just wont happen.

          1. Hazmet

Exactly on the concussion syndrome / settlement path. Maybe he cuts one of those Bonilla deals the Wilpons love that will pay him for the next 20 years. This way we could keep complaining about him for the next 2 decades. ;)

And he might be entitled to his full value based on the concussions. I’m not familar enough with the players agreement or his contract to know.

          2. srt

His loss of skills are not for lack of trying, as evidenced by that catch last night. You really have to feel for him a little. I know he never showed any offense from the get go but have to agree with Haz here…..I think one too many concussions now have taken their toll. For the good of his health first, and the team he really should call it a day. He can’t possibly need the money, I’m sure he’s set for life.

Ronnie also said for the good of the team and the line-up, when Baxter returns and if Bay is still here, he role should be reduced to coming off the bench, if necessary. Platoon Baxter and whoever else makes sense in LF.

Missed most of this game thankfully. Let’s hope this doesn’t start another 6+ game losing streak.

    Stick…you owe us a sweep sir! =)

    1. gategem

I guess you’re not aware of this but Stick continuously offers useless guarantees. They’re not even taken with a smile on one’s face but rather they should be ignored like some of the comments at MMO. This is not well known but Stick guaranteed a hall of fame career for Doug Sisk. :-)

    2. Stickguy

you missed the fine print. it was a sweep, or AT LEAST 3-4. So I am still in the running.

not a good day by Elvin there I see.

      1. NJstuckinTX

        Always read the fine print.

        1. gategem

Well in Stick’s case the fine print is not even visible with an electron microscope. :-)

          1. NJstuckinTX

His fantastic penmenship is always on display! Even at minuscule sizes.

  3. Mr North Jersey

Can we blame the weather for what happened to Niese last night?

    Come on can we, please?

What a game. Mets spot Niese 2 runs he gives up 6.

    Sigh.

    1. Hazmet

One of the more interesting stats they put up during the game last night that Niese was 2-3 with 4 days rest and 5-1 with 5 days rest. Can’t remember the ERA’s but they corresponded with the records as would be expected.

      1. srt

If I remember correctly, Niese said he concentrated in the off season in getting in the best shape he could, so this season he could last for the 30-32 starts he should be making.

I’m not sure this is as much about ‘rest’ in between starts as it is his pitch selection. For some reason, when he feels he doesn’t have his best cutter, he resorts to too many fastballs.
