Last night on the farm we saw anemic offenses from Buffalo, Binghamton, and Brooklyn; the Cyclones and Gnats both let one slip away; the Lucies won their 4th in a row; and a former first round pick hit a grand slam. Let’s find out who:
Indianapolis 6, Buffalo 0
It was another struggle for Jeurys Familia, who lasted just 3 innings giving up 5 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Pedro Beato on the other hand finally had a good outing, allowing just 1 base runner in 2 innings while striking out 4. The offense did not help with just 5 total hits. Mike Baxter and Mike Nickeas both had a double. Just a hunch, but I’m guessing Baxter plays for Buffalo today and then hops a plane out west and is activated for Monday’s game in San Fran. Lucas Duda was 0 for 4 and is not 1 for 12 since his AAA demotion.
Portland 5, Binghamton 1
Greg Peavey let up all 5 runs over 6 innings and lost his 7th of the season. Armando Rodriguez had 2 shutout innings and 4 strikeouts out of the pen and in his AA debut Adam Kolarek pitched a 1-2-3 inning and struck out 2. A Wilfredo Tovar double was the only extra-base hit the B-Mets offense had.
St. Lucie 8, Lakeland 3
This is starting to look like the St. Lucie team from the first half of the season, as they have won 5 of their last 6. Tyler Pill was real good again, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) with 7 strikeouts in 7 innings. Pill is 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA since his promotion to St. Lucie. The Lucies had 9 hits and 6 were doubles. T.J. Rivera had 2 doubles while Danny Muno, Richard Lucas, Aderlin Rodriguez, and Robbie Shields each had one of their own. A-Rod also had a single and drove in 4 runs.
Rome 9, Savannah 8
The Gnats put up a 4-spot in the 1st inning, but could not hold onto the lead. Domingo Tapia walked 4 and let in 3 runs over 5.1 innings while striking out 6. Randy Fontanez let in 4 more and finally Chasen Bradford allowed 2 unearned runs and took the blown save and loss. Cam Maron and Cole Frenzel had 3 hits each; Frenzel homered. Matt Reynolds, Dustin Lawley (showing some versatility by playing 3B), and Albert Cordero all had 2 hits each. Cordero is back above the Mendoza line.
Mahoning Valley 3, Brooklyn 2
Hansel Robles struck out 7 in 5 innings while giving up 1 run on 5 hits. John Mincone added 2 shutout innings but David Wynn allowed 2 unearned runs in the 8th as the Cyclones let one slip away. Just 5 total hits for Brooklyn, including a Brandon Nimmo single and a Kevin Plawecki double.
Kingsport 9, Bristol 5
Gavin Cecchini hit a grand slam, as the K-Mets keep beating up on Bristol, which is the only thing keeping them out of the Appy League basement. Corey Oswalt improved to 3-1 on the season with 7.2 solid innings, allowing just 3 runs on 9 hits; however, he had just 1 strikeout. Bradley Marquez played for the first time in literally a month and went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Marquez will be leaving soon for football camp at Texas Tech, so every at bat he gets his precious.

Familia…oh boy. Not coming up anytime soon to help this ball club.
TC hinted last night at bad news, 2 different updates. Only he wouldn’t give those updates and said we’d have to wait until today. When pressed, he did say something like it wasn’t all bad, or not that bad.
Reading here, doesn’t appear to be a set back with Baxter. I haven’t read anything on FF having another setback either.
Could be something with Johan, although any news about him other than a 15 day rest would have to be considered bad news.
Maybe Bay is going on the DL….

Well, one of them appears to be another set back with FF.

Can someone who has watched Familia pitch in the minors tell me what in their opinion seems to be the problem with Familia this season?
