Good Morning RDM!

Holy crap the Mets won in extra innings! Well, maybe they should of won the game in regulation, but of course Parnell had to blow the save. But hey, a win on a Hefner game, is a great win, right? So stop with the long faces and enjoy the day in Mets land. Oh wait…

Trade deadline is today. Too bad the Mets don’t want to do anything. I’ll grumble about it below when I get some coffee in me, join me won’t you?

I stayed up to watch this game in it’s entirety. It was like some out of a Marx brothers movie.

    ‘You take the game’.
‘No, I insist you take it.’
‘No, it’s all yours, you had i\t first’.

Don’t let the box score fool you on this one. There were about 5 errors, ones that should have been scored errors (not hits) and a handful of mental mistakes as well. On both sides.

    Hefner deserved better.
    Edgin is a stud.
Hairston doing what Hairston does best.

  2. NJstuckinTX

Hefner is better than Bautista. (that’s for you TRS)
    Edgin is indeed a stud.
    Hairston should probably get traded.
Bay scored 3 times, yet still has got to go.
Parnell… No more closing opportunities for you!

    1. Trs86

That he is. We could certainly stand an upgrade there with Young struggling even if Johan gets back.

So, about 7 hours remains before the trade deadline ends and I’m pretty ticked off at this point. Not trying to get my membership to “the core” ticked, but maybe one level down.

There were tons of folks screaming at Sandy for not making a move before the ASB. That didn’t bother me at all, up until that point only 6 trades were made the entire season (all for garbage minus Youk which was a dump) and the market wasn’t established by then.

I can completely appreciate that going 3-14 through the weekend clearly demonstrates that the team was not ready for the WC, but not one move? Not one move to get something to help. There are so many friggen holes on this team and there wasn’t one move. Madoff is gone and I get that the Wilpons are still broke, but something could have been done. They really couldn’t add 2m to the payroll?

I am not one to bash or even praise the almighty Sandy, but this offseason is time to put up or shut-up. If they don’t do anything major (and I am not talking about adding 30m to payroll) to improve this team, Mets land is going to be a very grim place. Those Sandy haters are going to lead a movement like the tea party against the organization.

Sandy has to realize that doing nothing today is going to bite him right?

    1. Stick

with you 100% on this buddy.

    2. NJstuckinTX

Well, I’m getting the feeling that trading for a player that will be gone the following year is not in the game plan. So that leaves someone who is controllable for at least 2013. Seems that players that are controllable are being valued crazy high. So, do you want him to shuffle around deck chairs on the Titanic or do you want him to over pay? Unless he can turn Murph or others into AA prospects with upside, there really isn’t much out there. And that would just add to the ugly 40 man situation. The only real option, in my mind, is to gun for a big boy, using Murph and a multitude of minor leaguers into an everyday OF. And that probably isn’t happening until the offseason.

      1. SaltyGary

How about some Choo in RF. I think were both homers for that guy (at least on a fantasy baseball level) right? ARB ELG in RF. He is available. There is nothing FA and you have to give to get. If he can get something locked in then do it. A season has passed with the kids and Duda is not working out (sorry stick) Thole is Thole and Murph isn’t the guy we need at second. They know where the holes are, it’s time to do something.

And as for overpaying, payroll got dropped over 50m and there are a ton of kids on the farm that can be expendable to get some ML ready players.

        1. NJstuckinTX

They wanted a controllable major leaguer plus prospects for him. I’d be all for getting some Choo, but unless they have a need for Murph (which they don’t, as they have Kipnis), I don’t think we match up. I wish we did. I’d throw them Murph, Duda, Familia and another prospect for Choo in a heartbeat.

        2. SaltyGary

They can always move murph to 3rd, hannarhan suks.

          1. NJstuckinTX

            Get er done, Sandy.

        3. wanny

i read somewhere (probably ESPN) that choo was pulled off because Cleveland’s asking price was too high.

His asking price should be too high. Why would they want to trade such a productive player at 30 years old who is still under control? He is sneaky good with a 300/400/475 slash lines throughout the back of his baseball card.

While the Mets have some farm system, they don’t have enough depth in it to support a trade for a player of that caliber while he is still under control. Why wouldn’t Cleveland expect a Matt Harvey in exchange for Choo?

          1. SaltyGary

I agree his value should be high but not a Harvey/Wheeler high. He puts up decent numbers and has a little speed. He is like a B level 5 tool player.

Say if Murphy was put into the trade they would also have to put in a very good prospect plus something else.

          2. wanny

Are you saying that the Mets would have to give Murphy plus or that Cleveland would have to put prospects with Choo for Murphy?

If I had Choo — and his career .291 .383 .474 line with excellent defense — I would expect a lot more than Murphy in return. His last three full healthy seasons were .302 .397 .500 and he has a good shot to equal that production this season too.

I really can’t imagine Murphy as the centerpiece in a deal for Choo — unless the something else included the likes of Fullmer and other high ceiling prospects that Cleveland really likes.

          3. NJstuckinTX

I would figure it would be Murph, Duda, Famailia and another. And that is conservative. I wouldn’t be surprised if they would want a Harvey or a Familia + Mateo or Flores types. Choo is really good. I can’t see Cleveland flipping him for next to nothing.

          4. SaltyGary

Oh I was saying murph+ and probably plus a couple. You would probably have to put someone in like Tapia from a prospect level and a couple more.

    3. srt

Media has been reported at this late date, any moves the FO makes will be more for long term going forward – as opposed to moves that might only help the team now.

Translated that tells me the FO doesn’t see us in the race this season, at this point. And actually, I’m fine with this.

If we can get something that will help in 2013, by all means do it. But a trade to try and fill holes this season in the hopes we get to post season? Not so much.

      1. Stick

I have no expectation though that they are going to do anything in the offseason either though.

building actually involves some work. Finding players to fill holes, converting unneeded assets (ML or MiL) into players that fit better, stuff like that.

Apparently the FO plan though is just wait forever hoping that the prospects all somehow develop together in some distant year, and beyond that shave payroll and fill in the gaps with cheap retreads.

And contrary to the mantra of the sandy haters, Omar did not leave the minors stocked. Just having a home grown lineup does not mean they are stars in the making!

and right now, they have a few pitchers close, and nothing vaguely ML viable in the system above A ball, except for Flores who has no position.

        1. srt

I’m not as upset as some Met fans about no moves this trade deadline.

The off season is another story entirely. I can’t wrap my brain around the FO doing nothing. I’ll reserve my ‘I hate this FO’ ranting until ST of next year. I’m betting that won’t be necessary.

          1. Stick

I have always thought that this would be the year to make the big moves, but I am starting to question that. So I bet you just might lose that bet!

  4. SaltyGary

I think I might pull a Pomes and Bayonne and just tweet things to Sandy’s account all day. Maybe I’ll pick up more than my ten followers LOL.

    1. Connor O'Brien

      what’s bayonne’s twitter?

      1. SaltyGary

It’s @TommyGunVideo but he super twitter banned me so I can’t see what he says unless someone re-tweets.

Just search “metsgm” and some gems are starting to materialize.

  5. Stick

Nah, Sandy probably gave the whole FO off today, since there won’t be anything to do.

Meanwhile, I read the morning paper, and the big article about all the big moves that the phils are discussing to retool and address holes for the upcoming years.

  6. SaltyGary

I might have to apply to MMO to become an author and close up shop here. I think I am starting to lose it.

    1. Stick

damn it sandy, get your thumb out of your ass and wake up the 4 other GMs and do something! anything! just do it!

      1. NJstuckinTX

Get Phillips and the interns on the the phone, STAT.

Now that would be a cool band name. Steve Phillips and the Interns, live and in concert, 3 nights only at the West Milford Rotary Club. Bring your own chairs.

    2. srt

Now why would you want to do that, Salty?

I think we need to stage an intervention for you. LOL.

      1. Stick

I think we just need to get him more beer.

        1. SaltyGary

I think I need a prescription for zanax. I’m losing it.

          1. srt

‘Slow and steady wins the race’.

Or some such rhetoric as this.

          2. SaltyGary

Oh don’t start feeding me lines that I kept stating at the beginning of this season. Today I am talking a day off and will stew in my own bile. I’ll be back to my realistic self by next week. Today I am holding my pitch fork.

          3. srt

Did you say that at the beginning of the season? If yes, I didn’t know.
Was just using some platitudes to make it better.
Poor idea of a joke, I guess. :-)

  7. NJstuckinTX

    Vicky to the Dodgers.

    Possibly Pence to the Giants.

And 1 win, 95 million left on his contract Lee is going no where! haha.

    1. Stick

If the phils get actual good talent that help the team for these guys, I am going to be really pissed.

      1. srt

So much for the Phills dynasty.

Took a couple of years but they finally fell apart. How the mighty have fallen.

They had almost no choice at this point. They’ve got virtually nothing down on the high farm ready to come up – with the exception of Dom Brown.

3 1/2 hours to go. Think they’ll send Lee packing too?

        1. Stick

no one is trading for lee I don’t think.

and they can be just fine next year, assuming the old guys rebound a bit. But they will be heavily dependent on the old crowd again.

of course, they freed up a ton of money, so expect them to go after a major free agent bat. Most likely Bourne for CF? Or just bring Vicky back!

          1. srt

I wouldn’t mind seeing Bourne in CF in Citi.

    2. SaltyGary

Pence deal is done, that is a great move for the Giants.

      1. Stick

I just hope it doesnt work out for the Phils the way it did for the mets last year.

man, must be nice to have a GM that is actually trying to improve the team for going forward.

        1. wanny

that’s not a fair knock on sandy. he doesn’t have material to offer like victorino or pence.

          1. NJstuckinTX

agreed. the only thing he has is trying to combine about 3-4 prospects for major league talent, and the only true stars in the minors is Wheeler and (was) Harvey, who aren’t going anywhere.

        2. srt

          I don’t get it.
The Phils had almost no choice but to restock.

I don’t think the Mets are nearly in that same position.
Not sure how many deals our FO tried to make these past couple of weeks – and probably never will. If any of those included creating a hole to fill a hole, what’s the point?

I’d better see some moves this off season to improve the team going forward though…..

      2. NJstuckinTX

Even though he has another year left on his contract at 14 mil, it’s a good move for the giants, as they get him for the year, can offer him a tender if they don’t re-sign him and get a pick should he walk.

        1. srt

This. The new CBA rules changed the game this trade deadline. Far preferable to acquire a player who isn’t a rental.

Still don’t know what the Phils got for Pence.

          1. srt

Dang. Looks like they acquired a 2009 second round pick 1st baseman/catcher prospect.

  8. wanny

Phillies get a pretty good haul of Ethan Martin and Josh Lindbom for Victorino.

    1. Stick

2 live arms, and lindblom could be a nice asset for them. Crap. I was really hoping they could have sustained their early post-ASG run and hang onto these guys to lose them for nothing.

Now that pence is gone 2, they are going to need to find some offense for next year.

  9. wanny

the bottom line is that it makes little sense for the Mets make a significant buy and they really have nothing of value to sell. trading murphy just to make a trade doesn’t make sense. he is a good young hitter who is under control. and valdespin and turner are not viable replacements.

the best i can see the mets doing is taking on a short term contract for little in return but i don’t see them being willing to spend a heck of a lot of money — and don’t really blame them at this point.

    1. SaltyGary

It doesn’t have to be significant. or any kind of blockbuster. To do something like that you would have to trade pieces like Dickey, Wheeler and no one wants that. My gripe is there are so many damn holes in the OF and BP, why cant a move be made to address it for this year and in the future. I have a hard time believing something can’t be done.

I was fine with them saying they have salary restrictions in the past. I am even fine with them being not even close to being out of the woods. But they can’t add 1-5 million annual salary guys right now?

They need to show that they can start investing in the team again and they are not.

      1. srt

Making a move for an OF right now that will help going forward is going to cost.

Maybe the FO did try to get a deal or 2 done. Or maybe they feel the market will open up some in the off season for getting better in the OF.

Pence’s defense in RF in CBP is not all that great. Can’t seem him being better in Citi field.

Victorino is well into the wrong side of 30 and a FA at the end of the season.

        1. SaltyGary

It will cost in the off-season just like it will at the trade deadline. It will always cost.

You are absolutely right in we don’t know what the FO has attempted to do, it’s all speculation. Deep down, since ASB, do you think they have really tried to do anything that wasn’t just picking up scraps?

In no way am I saying I am a Sandy hater, or giving into any of those silly conspiracy theories. I just feel that as fans we have a legitimate gripe that nothing was down after that good first half. No acquisition at the deadline can fix this team into a true contender but something should have been down to at least address some of these glaring issues.

          1. wanny

i’m scanning the sellers teams trying to figure out who that outfielder might be that could help down the road… and I am coming up with Jeff Francouer, who can’t even do the one thing he used to do: hit lefties.

          2. SaltyGary

Please don’t ever link that name to the Mets again.

          3. srt

I’m not as down on this FO not doing anything this trade deadline to help the team just for this season.

With the new CBA rules, and the Mets poor showing coming out of the ASB, I’m glad they didn’t panic. Then again, I was one of those Met fans that really like the Beltran and KRod trades last trade dealine in 2011.

However, all bets are off this off season. I don’t want to hear we’re standing pat with this OF, bare minimum. Absolutely have to do something with that.

BP still needs some help as well. Catcher should be in the plans too.

          4. NJstuckinTX

            SRT,

I think you are right in now we are passed the Grace stage, and next year we need to start seeing some progress. For me, I still think they are another year away, like 2014. But the Bay/Wright/Santana/Dickey contracts and how they are handled will be paving the way to how this team starts to take steps forward in 2014. You’ll have Harvey and Wheeler on the roster, no longer have Bay and Santana. May or may not have Wright & Dickey. Niese and maybe Gee (+harvey and wheeler) gives you some youth to a SP. I’m curious to how Sandy is going to revamp the OF, because it isn’t pretty and doesn’t look to get better right away.

  10. wanny

    from jim bowden:

Hunter Pence deal with the Giants does not include Gary Brown, Brandon Belt or Kyle Crick according to Philies source

doesnt sound like the phillies did great on this deal but they did get rid of $14m.

  11. NJstuckinTX

Quite a bit of movement today. Broxton to the Reds, who already have the best BP. (sheds a tear in envy…)
