Last NIght on the Farm – 7/30/12

Back from vacation – and I brought home a respiratory infection as a souvenir.  Binghamton ha the night off, and Savannah was rained out.  In between my chest heaves, let’s see what else was going on down on the farm.

Indianapolis 6, Buffalo 2

Seriously folks, I’ve stated before that I could live with Jenry Mejia in the rotation or the bullpen this year (probably the latter since he is coming off TJ surgery), whatever was the best way to get his arm strength back.  From there they could decide in the off season if they had a handle on where he would eventually end up.  But this constant jerking around in season makes it look like the Mets have no idea what they are doing with him, and that gives me reasons for concern.  Last night, back in the rotation, Mejia was again ineffective in three innings of work,  Though he gave up only one run and struck out three, he also allowed seven base runners (three hits and four walks),not to mention a wild pitch.  Dylan Owen got roughed up for the loss in relief of Jenry.  Lucas Duda was 2 for 5 with an RBI, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis struck out as a pinch hitter in his return to the Bisons.

St. Lucie 8, Clearwater 3

The Lucies rode a four run fifth to take the lead on the Thrashers and never looked back.  TJ Rivera and Rafael Fernandez were both 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.  Chase Huchingson kept St. Lucie in the game (5IP, 3R, 8H, 1BB, 2K) and Jack Leathersitch and Taylor Whitenton locked it down from there with two scoreless innings apiece.

Brooklyn, Mahoning Valley 1

Could the Cyclone bats be finally waking up?  For the second night in a row, Brooklyn produced a double digit hit output.  Leading the way from the leadoff spot was Brandon Nimmo, who went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.  His slash line is up to .252/.374/.406.  Rainy Lara picked up the win, going seven innings while allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out 10!.

Johnson City 3, Kingsport 2

Nice to see some things never change.  Kingsport continues its losing way, though this time with a heartbreaker instead of the ho-hum blowout.  Akeel Morris, now pitching out of the bullpen, threw three good innings of relief allowing just a hit and three walks.  But Trevor Martin led off the ninth with a solo homer and that was that.  Gavin Cecchini was 1 for 3.

Almost a sin what they’ve been doing to Mejia.
Can’t help thinking the only reason they pulled him from the rotation and stuck him in the BP to begin with is b/c of the epic fail on the big club in that pen. And that goes against everything this FO has been preaching.

Just leave him be for the rest of the season.

Oh, enough with this whining about Mejia. pitchers, particularly in the minors, move back and forth all the time.

If he is a mental midget that can’t handle it, he has no future as a ML player. And I just don’t buy it as a reason for him to totally suck.

How about, it is his fault, not the teams?

I also don’t blame them for trying him in the pen when they did. Everyone was screaming about the pen needed help, and he is someone likely to end up there, so they took a shot.

also keep in mind that Omar botched it bad by starting his clock early. They don’t control him much longer, and he is way short innings to become a SP unless the throw the 25+/year innings out the window. So they may not be able to keep him long enough to finish developing as a SP.

so, they took a shot at getting him back to the majors, it did not work, so back to the rotation to get his innings.

also, keep in mind that this guy is in AAA, but had been in the majors. So you would think that he would jump at a chance to go back to the pen, and get back to the majors?

wouldn’t he rather get back to the majors now, vs. spending this year and all of 2013 in the minors?

Just based on service time, options and 40 man limits, he will never make it to the majors as a SP with the Mets.

We’ve got some nice arms down on the farm.
Now if we can only draft/develop some nice bats to go along with those.

at some point, you are going to have to trade some of these arms for the bats you are missing.
