So Kirk Nieuwenhuis has torn the plantar fascia in his foot and is going to be out an indeterminate amount of time. Quick side note, I one got a wart on the plantar of my foot, hurt like hell. Began dating a doctor and she wanted to cut it out back at her apartment on the first date. She wasn’t even a podiatrist. True story. She was kind of crazy. On to last night’s action!
Buffalo 13, Syracuse 7
If a clean pitcher’s duel is your cup of tea, just move on now. The two teams combined for 34 hits, but it was the Bisons who made theirs count more. Lucas Duda went 3 for 4 with a two run homer and three runs scored, Josh Satin went 4 for 5 with a three run homer and four RBI, and Mike Nickeas went 2 for 4 with a two run homer. On the down side, Jeurys Familia started this one and didn’t last long (2.2 IP, 5 R, 5 H -2HR -, 3 BB, 0 K,). If you have any idea what he is going to mature into at a major league level, please let me know. Pedro Beato went 2.2 perfect innings of relief with 2 K’s.
Reading 4, Binghamton 1
The B-Mets were squaring off against the Phillies newly acquired Ethan Martin, who the Dodgers surrendered for Shane Victorino. Darren Gorski started for Binghamton and had a similar line to Martins (6IP, 5H, 1BB, 8K). However, three of the hits off Darren went out of the park, and that was the difference in the game. Tough to win when your outfielders are watching ball s sail over their head. Wilmer Flores played second base and went 2 for 4 with a solo homer. He turns 21 on Monday.
St. Lucie 6, Fort Myers 0
Look at Tyler Pill everyone (7.2IP, 0 R, 3H, 1BB, 10K, 2HBP). That’s dominance folks. Cory Vaughn and Rafael Fernandez both went 2 for 4 with solo homers, and Aderlin Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with two solo homers of his own. He now has twenty on the year, leading all Mets farmhands.
Asheville 3, Savannah 2
Domingo Tapia got the start and was strong (7.1Ip, 3R, 2ER, 3H, 0BB, 2HBP, 5K) but two unearned runs in the eighth doomed him and the Sand Gnats. Matt Reynolds was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Brooklyn 3, Connecticut 0
For a team that had out hit it’s opposition 12 to 2, this one sure felt closer than it needed to. The Cyclones put up all three of their runs in the first and the game just coasted from that point on. Luis Cessa went five shutout innings allowing two hits while walking none and striking out four. Matthew Bowman (3IP, 3K’s) and John Mincone, who notched the save, combined to preserve the shutout. Brandon Nimmo went 2 for 3 with a run scored, bumping his slash line to .265/.385/.416. His OPS is .801. Phillip Evans was 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Kevin Plawecki was 1 for 3.
Greeneville 18, Kingsport 2
The Baseball Gods don’t have a Kraken, so when the K-Mets defy them by winning a game, they have to release the Grasshoppers (the Baseball Gods don’t get the best agents of vengence. It’s all political). Maikis de La Cruz was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Gavin Cecchini was out again after being plunked two nights ago. Wanna hear about the pitching? I can take it if you can. A 7th round pick out of a high school in San Diego, Corey Oswalt got the start and was roughed up for six runs in three innings, Luis Rengel gave up nine (nine!) in 2.1 innings, Edioglis Viliasmil allowed two in .2 innings, and Juan Urbina gave up a run in an inning – while walking three and getting his ERA up to 10.38. I bet you would have rather not known.

The crazy ones are usually fun in bed LOL. I’ve taken nail clippers to those things when I was younger. Bloody mess and couldn’t get enough of it for it to stop growing back.

I know we have some teenagers on here, so I wanted to keep it PG. nevertheless, the old saying about the crazy ones also being vixens in the sack is under no threat of being disproven from any of my anecdotes.
In the end, I had to get a podiatrist to cut out the wart. Counted as ‘minor surgery’ on my insurance

At this point Familia and the coaches need to sit down and re evaluate all that they are doing because whatever they have been doing just is not working.
Familia leads the league in games started (23) and what stands out to me is that in nearly half of them (11 of 23) he has been unable to go at least 5 innings. Heck he has only gone more than 5 innings 6 times.
On the positive side nice job by Tapia and Pill.

With Familia it’s important to keep in mind he’s still just 22 years old. How many college kids get drafted as juniors and are in AAA a year later? not too many, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that he’s struggling. He did have three very good starts in a row not too long ago, so the potential is definitely there. At this point I don’t think there’s reason to over react or try to drastically change him in some way. He’ll take his lumps, but putting him out there every five days is the best way to develop him. I do believe his future is in the bullpen, but until he shows signs of being ready to contribute to an ML roster he should stay in the rotation and the organization should show some patience, because he’s still very young for a AAA pitcher.

Good point on the age. Looking at this season it’s hard to understand what the difficulty has been especially when he finally looked to be turning it around at one point. The stuff is there based on the strikeouts and from all accounts he is healthy as well.
Backman said in the postgame that Familia didn’t look confident and he has been inconsistent. He went on to say that the confidence is something that is just a matter of time so maybe the age as you said does play a part.
I wonder if him seeing Harvey move up and him possibly getting outside his game to impress that he too is ready played any part in his recent struggles?
In an case of one thing there is no doubt is he has the stuff just maybe needs a lil more time to mature.

Nice to see Duda have a good game at the plate. Familia, though… these control issues aren’t encouraging.
