Ugh.
Dickey deserved better. As in none of those runs should have scored.
Getting so tired of losing games aided by poor defense.
If Hairston had caught that ball which should not have been a problem,
If Thole could have held onto that throw,
If Thole and Wright were paying attention on that steal at third.
Of course, didn’t help that we got 9 hits and 1 lousy run.

The number of times a pitcher gets a win when he doesn’t “deserve” one will usually even out with the number of losses he gets that he doesn’t “deserve”. And no reason to rip on Thole. After the concussion, I’d be tentative to take a collision head-on at the plate after that

A catcher doesn’t absorb the brunt of a collision at homeplate if he knows what the hell he’s doing. John Stearns was one of the best I’ve seen at this play with the base runner usually coming out second best. It helped that Stearns was a defensive back in college and approached it as a defensive back taking on a receiver or running back coming right at him. Thole has to master the technique or runners will always attempt to take him out.
Last season when Buster Posey was injured in a collision at homeplate Vin Scully talked at length on a Dodgers broadcast how Posey did not execute the proper technique on that play. If he had he probably would not have been injured. I use the term probably because there is always the chance of being injured even if the catcher is perfect on the play. If Thole shies away from making that play then he may as well give up catching since he’s not much of a receiver anyway.
BTW in today’s game drill Carlos Quentin to let him know that all’s fair in love, in war and in a baseball game.

This one is not hard to figure out what went wrong. Pitching was there but the defense and bats weren’t.
9 hits are misleading as the Mets scattered those hits and couldn’t really bunch them together. I think they were something like 1 for 8 with RISP tonight. While hitting into 3 double plays as well.
Wright and the Mets fell asleep on that delayed steal that eventually scored on a sac fly. Hairston looked like he could of had that ball but even if he didn’t the out should of definitely been made at home but Thole with ample time to set still allowed the ball to pop loose. Sigh
After that Wright k’d in the 8th killing the best chance to get back in it for the most part with Spin also being unable to pick Wright up and grounding out to end the inning.
Need to win 2morrow or rather later today.

sounds pitiful. Good thing I went to bed after the 4th when Dickey still looked good.
horrible day by the offense, again. And losing the 1st game of the series with your #1, with 2 rookies on tap to follow, is not a good way to pick up ground!

The only ground they will pick up is when they’re flying home from San Diego.

so, sounds like the Mets are moving ahead with the idiotic idea to beat Dickey like a rented mule (pun not intended), to get the rest of the rotation extra rest. As opposed to the logical solution, use 6 starters. And less than a month until September, when that is really easy.

Why would you want to use your 38 year old pitcher and ace of your staff this way in what is pretty much a lost season? It’s just not a question of his throwing arm holding up because he throws a knuckleball but the wear and tear on his 38 year old body has to be considered. Didn’t Dickey suffer from a foot injury last year?

While I couldn’t locate their lifetime record in San Diego the place has always been like a black hole imo. Outside of the one series in ’86 I never expect anything good to come out of San Diego. Whether it used to be Winfiled or Gwynn beating us like a drum to today.
Hope they get one of the next 2 and get the heck out of there.

The Mets swept the Padres in San Diego in 1969.
Actually I love San Diego, the weather and especially the women. And before the days of the Mexican Drug Cartel it was the gateway into Tijuana. Now I would not make the trip into Mexico.

At what point does this team say enough? .150? .145?
