Plenty of inclement weather affecting the farm last night, but five of the six teams were able to get their games in, so let’s check ‘em out:
Zack Wheeler’s AAA debut was rained out in Buffalo, so instead he will pitch game 1 of a double header today in Syracuse. Jenrry Mejia will pitch game 2.
Reading 5, Binghamton 2
Mark Cohoon struck out 7 in 5.2 innings, but he gave up 5 runs, all on 2 homeruns. Jeff Kaplan and Brad Holt each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Eric Campbell and Allan Dykstra singled to give the B-Mets their only hits of the game.
St. Lucie 9, Fort Myers 1
Chase Huchingson is back in the rotation and back to pitching well, giving up 1 run over 6 innings, with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Alonzo Harris, Richard Lucas, and Robbie Shields all had 3 hits. Lucas and Kai Gronauer both had a homerun and 3 RBI’s. Cory Vaughn and Travis Taijeron both drove in a run, although Taijeron’s average has dropped to .195.
Asheville 5, Savannah 4 (11 innings)
The Gnats were victims of a walk off when Brandon Sage let up back-to-back doubles in the 11th. Jacob DeGrom started and had a mediocre outing by his standards, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) over 6 innings with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Matt Reynolds was 2 for 5 with a 2-run homer, as he continues to rake. Charley Thurber also hit a 2-run homer.
Brooklyn 8, Auburn 0 (8 innings)
This one wrapped up early due to weather, but the Cyclones had the game well in hand. An up and coming youngster named Johan Santana started and pitched 3 shutout innings, striking out 3 and allowing 1 hit and 1 walk. Afterwards Johan threw 3 simulated innings to push his pitch count to 90. Julian Hilario followed with 5 shutout innings, getting the win. Kevin Plawecki was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Nelfi Zapata was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI’s while catching for Johan. Phillip Evans hit a 2-run homer, his 5th of the year.
Kingsport 3, Princeton 1
Miller Diaz allowed just 1 run over 7 innings with 7 strikeouts. Akeel Morris, now in the bullpen, followed with 2 shutout innings and his first career save. Tomas Nido was 3 for 4 with a double. Yeixon Ruiz and Jeyckol De Leon both had 2 hits, including a homerun. Jorge Rivero and Jeff Diehl also had 2 hits each. Still no Gavin Cecchini, who has been officially diagnosed with a fractured finger; there is no timeline for his return.

Johan seems to be right on track for coming back up here this weekend. No setbacks, didn’t get shelled….maybe the ankle was a problem in his starts after the no-no.

The ankle problem was courtesy of our illustrious manager that played Turner at 1st base. To TC’s credit in a subsequent game he played Murphy at 1st and Turner at 2nd. However, it appears that whenever there is a choice between offense and defense TC chooses offense.

TC will never be confused with Bobby Fisher.

Yes, I remember that low throw from Turner that caused Johan to bobble it a bit when catching it – which in turn probably caused him to not be able to pay attention enough when he was trying to get to the bag.
I never want to see Turner at first again unless it’s an absolute emergency.

I think Santana took pics with just about every one of the Cyclones yesterday. All I kept seeing were pics of him with different players.

I see SNY is airing Wheeler’s start tonight. I’ll be tuning in.
