From our friends in the media Relations Department
FLUSHING, N.Y., August 6, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced that Pat LaFrieda of Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors will introduce his Original Filet Mignon Steak Sandwich to the public at Citi Field tomorrow, Tuesday, August 7 when the Mets host the Miami Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
The original LaFrieda family recipe features hand-cut 100% black angus seared filet mignon topped with Monterey jack cheese and sweet caramelized onions, served with a secret au jus on a custom-made and toasted French baguete.
The sandwich will be available in LaFrieda Meats’ own stand in Taste of the City on the Field Level behind the centerfield scoreboard near section 139. This officially marks LaFrieda Meats’ first and only retail location. Prior to Citi Field, LaFrieda’s steak sandwich was only available to lucky family and friends.
“We are honored to be the first public venue to sell Pat’s signature sandwich,” said Jeff Wilpon, Chief Operating Officer, Mets. “Pat, with his long family history in the meat world, well-respected work ethic and choice of quality meats, is a perfect addition to the All-Star lineup of world-renowned restaurateurs and chefs at Citi Field.”
“Partnering with the New York Mets to bring our steak sandwich to the fans at Citi Field is a dream come true for our family,” says Pat LaFrieda. “While at a game recently, I noticed a great steak sandwich was the only thing missing from the phenomenal food line-up, and thought our LaFrieda family recipe would be a perfect fit. We are honored to be able to open our first retail location at the home of the Mets where the Pat LaFrieda Original Filet Mignon Sandwich will take its place amongst the superior quality of food at one of New York City’s most iconic venues.”
Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors will also supply Citi Field’s Delta Sky360 Club and Acela Club.
LaFrieda, known as the “Magician of Meat,” owns and operates New York City’s most prestigious and valued meat packing facility, Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors, which supplies the finest restaurants in NYC, DC, Philadelphia, Ohio, Las Vegas, Miami, Chicago and more. His family stars in the reality show “Meat Men” on The Food Network, which debuted in April. The third generation meat supplier is famous for its aged steak program and over 50 custom hamburger blends. LaFrieda is the mastermind behind such burgers as the famous “Black Label Burger” and aged steaks at Minetta Tavern (the reigning haute burger in NYC), as well as signature custom blends at hot spots such as Shake Shack, Spotted Pig, Union Square Café, and Blue Smoke.

He just did one for a pork sandwich in Philly someplace that almost made me hop on the train and go in for lunch.

Ha! I caught that. Thought it was just a problem with my browser and how it was loading.
Thanks for the fix.

On the one hand, that sandwich sounds absolutely delicious. Mmmmmm….caramelized onions…
On the other hand, how comical to issue a press release quoting Jeff Wilpon about a f***ing sandwich with the shape this team is in. Only the Mets. A press release about a sandwich.
But I am sure it is another integral part of THE PLAN from the adults in the room that us silly, unrealistic, bi-polar nabobs of negativity just cannot understand.
Clearly this sandwich is and will continue to be a central part of the secret but undoubtedly in-progress PLAN to return this team to its past glories.
There is a pastrami sandwich in St. Lucie doing very well, and a Reuben in Buffalo that Baseball America thinks VERY highly of.
All hail THE PLAN!

Reuben is obviously already on the big team.
Don’t we have some Cubans in the minor league system?
And I know there are multiple meatballs in the system as well.

The meatball sub has been a big disappointment; Fred held a press conference after they drafted the meatball sub. They say it hits a little better than Den Dekker, but still not well enough to be taken seriously. But it was an Omar pick.
They also drafted an awesome club sandwich in the 2nd round this year, but failed to sign it. Fear not though, supposedly they are saving their dough for a pbj that will be in next year’s draft.

Hmm, a double Den Dekker sandwich sounds mighty tasty for lunch…

They also sent out a letter this week saying if you don’t want your season ticket prices to go up, you need to pay by 08/31.

I have to say, in all seriousness, that I finally am starting to develop some serious dislike for the way this team does business.
This to the sorry hive of constant errors that is their chosen blog in Metsblog to a press conference about a sandwich.
The Wilpons really do, as my Dad would say, eat shit in chunks.

I’ll bite. What is the matter with that letter from the Mets? I understand making fun of MB of course, but that seems pretty straight forward.

A letter asking for 2013 payments in early August, threatening to raise prices if you don’t pay up soon, right on the heels of yet another summer collapse?
Yes, great PR from the kings of tone deaf PR.
Met attendance has dropped 40% in the last four years.
Perhaps a discount for renewing early might be appropriate?

lots of places do that. You can get your discount (or no increase) by renewing early. If you don’t want to, don’t bother, and just deal with the options later (get/don’t get, price up/down, etc.).

8/7/2012-11:08am at 11:08 am (UTC -4)
Absolutely correct. Of course lots of places do that.
But a business with attendance down 40% in the last four years, which has another losing team, which had a historic payroll cut, which did nothing to improve the team when it was contending, MIGHT have considered a goodwill gesture to remaining season ticket holders and not behaved in this manner.
There are lots of reasons why the team is continuing to lose, continuing to lose fans, and is regarded the way it is, and this move is yet another of those reasons.
But I am sure the breaking news about the new sandwich will bring in a few thousand new season ticket buyers!
All hail THE PLAN!

While I’m sure many other do business this way, the reality is the Wilpon’s Mets are broke. Since they obviously are not inclined to sell anytime soon, we’re just going to see more of the same as the Wilpons try and hang on.
The only thing that’s going to put fans in the seats is a contending team. Hard to do when you cut payroll some 50 MIL dollars. I’m not saying you have to spend like the Phillies to win but when you reduce the payroll in one season by such a historical amount – and half the payroll is taken up by just a few players – it’s going to take some y ears to turn this around.
On that note….hey Stick…yesterday marked the end of the Phillies long sold out game streak. Just goes to show…..if you’re not winning, they won’t come.

the fans are turning on the team, and it warms my heart to see it. I am figuring they will have a big rebound in the standings next year, but if that does not happen, the attendance drop will snowball.
Beauty is, they have pretty much maxed out spending now based on sellouts and post season revenue. The latter, not too likely this year!
They do have a new (bigger) TV deal coming soon, but not sure what year that starts.
I don’t think we will have to take up a collection for those owners, but the days of 180mill payroll may not last, because that group is not likely to want to subsidize losses!

That TV deal isn’t 2013. I believe I read it’s 2014.
With all the trades they did, I read they got their payroll down to 5 MIL under the luxury tax for this year.
I know they have some money coming off the books end of this season but not sure it’s going to be enough to fill the holes they’ve got on that team. They too need an OF – as well as some BP pieces and a 3rd baseman – unless they’re gonna resign the soon to be 37 year old, oft injured Polanco.

While the taste of said 2nd round sandwich may have been delectable, the thought of eating a Stanky-Sandwich is not all that appealing.

I have no problem with the release. Any team would do it. It is also not really about a sandwich rather announcing a “significant” new food vendor being added. I’m sure they would have done the same if they added some famous BBQ restaurant as a vendor.
But look at the bright side. Jeffy finally found something suited to his talents (food tasting)!

Hey Ed! I hope things are better for you my friend.
I actually think the sandwich looks absolutely delicious and sounds amazing. Not sure if I am going to make it to Citi this year–I hope to in Sept, and if I do, seeing you and seeing one of those sandwiches will be my top priorities, in that order!

where’s the sizzle on this team, oh it’s in the sandwich.
This is the best Met’s food story since Ike’s Mom’s soup in AZ.
Bobby Flay is destined to be the next manager no doubt.

It’s not like they are taking out ad space to promote this announcement or are they?
They teamed up with a reputable brand to exclusively it seems for the time being sell their product at the park and sent out a press release.
Let’s try not to make too much of this.
Looks like a good sandwich though I dare not ask how much will it set you back at the park.
