Last Night on the Farm – 8/8/12

Last night, both Buffalo and Kingsport saw their opponents walk off with a win while Binghamton and Savannah won convincingly.  Let’s take a look:

Lehigh Valley 5, Buffalo 4

Jeurys Familia pitched pretty well but was hurt by the defense behind him (including his own).  Familia went 6 innings, giving up 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7.  C.J. Nitkowski let up 3 hits and a walk but pitched 1.2 scoreless innings; the old timer may get a chance in the bigs sometime soon as an audition for next year perhaps.  After piching 2 shutout innings, Fernando Cabrera gave up the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th.  Fred Lewis doubled and homered, his 10th of the season.  Josh Rodriguez, Josh Satin, and Adam Loewen all had 2 hits.  Lucas Duda was 0 for 4 with 2 walks.  Matt Den Dekker was 0 for 5 with a walk and 2 strikeouts.

Binghamton 8, New Britain 3

Jefry Marte hit a 3-run homer as part of a 5-run 2nd inning to blow the game open for the B-Mets.  Reese Havens was 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.  Wilmer Flores was 0 for 4 but scored 2 runs.  Francisco Pena drove in 2 runs.  Darin Gorski got the win after giving up just 2 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings.  Armando Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning and Ryan Fraser got the final 5 outs, including 2 strikeouts without giving up a hit.

Palm Beach 4, St. Lucie 2

Angel Cuan took the loss after giving up 3 runs on 8 hits over 4 innings.  Erik Goeddel piggy-backed and gave up an unearned run on 5 hits over 4 innings, striking out 4 and walking none.  Aderlin Rodriguez homered for the second straight day, providing the only 2 runs for the Lucies.  Cesar Puello was not in the lineup a day after leaving a game early because “he was just a little tired”, as manager Ryan Ellis explained.

Savannah 9, Greeneville 1

The Gnats scored 2 in the 7th and 5 in the 8th for a rare blowout win.  Gilbert Gomez was 3 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI’s.  Greg Pron had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s.  Matt Reynolds and Dustin Lawley had 2 hits each.  Alex Panteliodis had another nice outing, allowing just 1 run over 6 innings while striking out 8.  Carlos Vazquez and Jared West combined for 3 shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Lowell 4, Brooklyn 1

Luis Mateo took the loss, giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits over 6 innings, although he did strike out 9 and walk none.  The Cyclones managed just 4 singles on offense.  Brandon Nimmo sat out again; apparently he was hit on the shoulder by a pitch over the weekend.

Bristol 3, Kingsport 2

John Gant was solid, letting up 1 run on 5 hits over 5.2 innings with no walks and 6 strikeouts, but Matthew Budgell gave up a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th as Bristol walked off with the win.  Maikis De La Cruz and Jeff Diehl both had 2 hits.  The K-Mets struck out 16 times, including two players who took home golden sombreros.

It is really hard ti imagine Familia ever making it as a viable ML SP.

and like many of these guys, it probably won’t be on the Mets, since they got added to the 40 man so early they will run out of control before they are ready for the Show.

Maybe he can make the pen next year? But without decent control, that would amount to Manny Acosta v2.0, right?

If he could only string like 6 good games together, he would be useful as trade bait.

Hey, I just thought of a crazy idea.

Package him up with Spin and see what you get!

I would be all for that, as Spin does have some value. But the sad fact may be that Spin could be in line to be an everyday CF for this team next year. Scary!

I am in the firm belief they need to turn about 4+ B prospects into 1 A prospect. Aderline is crushing the ball, but can’t move up as the next league up is full of players that play his position. just saying.

if you take out his time at KPort his BA is .247. He strikes out a ton and doesn’t walk. Couple that with a sub .900 FA and you have yourself a DH on a bad team.

We have to do something in the way of trades if they really have any plans to compete. Spending money as long as the Wilpons remain owners won’t be much of an option.

MF, they have to make some of those trades anyway (and the volume for quality concept needs to be how), just because they have too many guys that would have to be on the 40 man, or put through waivers (if not taken as a rule 5 pick).

this is the downside to doing nothing as a plan but trying to let your prospects develop, especially with young IFA guys. You end up running out of time/space.

Same thing is going to happen with Mejia. Before they can hope to build him up as a SP, he will run out of options and be elsewhere (Thanks Jerry and omar for starting his clock 2 years too soon!)

Aderlin just got to St. Lucie and he’s only 20 years old, so there’s no need to push him to AA just yet. Also, his career fielding percentage is increasingly irrelevant. The point of the minor leagues is to improve and develop, and his fielding is showing some improvement this year. He may also be moved to 1B ultimately.
