Last Night on the Farm – 8/9/12

Three wins, one loss, and two rainouts equals a good night on the farm.  Let’s take a look:

Buffalo 10, Lehigh Valley 1

This one was called in the 7th, but the Bisons had long since proven their dominance over the Iron Pigs.  Josh Satin led the way with 3 hits, including 2 doubles.  Val Pascucci hit a 3-run homer.  Even Matt Den Dekker had a productive day, going 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI’s, upping his average to .198.  Lucas Duda sat this one out, but no promotion or injury has been reported.  Chris Schwinden pitched all 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 3.  Schwinden has had several quality starts since rejoining the Bisons after being DFA four times in a month’s time.

Binghamton 6, New Britain 4

Greg Peavey toughed it out for 6.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits and getting the win.  Jeff Kaplan pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and Ryan Fraser pitched a scoreless 9th for the save; Fraser has been real good over the last month.  Reese Havens was the DH from the leadoff spot and went 4 for 5.  Wilmer Flores was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.  Jefry Marte had 2 hits, including a double.

St. Lucie 5, Palm Beach 2

Tyler Pill mysteriously lasted just 2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits.  Jack Leathersich struck out 4 in 2 scoreless innings.  Jeff Walters and Hamilton Bennett also had 2 scoreless innings each.  Taylor Whitenton got the save after a hitless 9th.  Richard Lucas and Blake Forsythe had 2 hits each.  Forsythe hit a 3-run homer to put the Lucies up for good.

Savannah played a scoreless inning before their game was suspended.  They will play a doubleheader tonight.

Lowell 3, Brooklyn 1

Luis Cessa gave up 2 homeruns, accounting for all 3 runs, in 6 innings of work.  Matthew Bowman pitched 2 shutout innings of relief, striking out 3.  Just 3 total hits for the Cyclones, including doubles by Eudy Pina and Stefan Sabol.  Brandon Nimmo was absent yet again.

Kingsport was rained out.

So Schwinden…is he one of those type pitchers that’s dominant in AAA but will never quite make it in the MLs, even as a 5th starter?

most likely. just does not seem to have the “stuff” to survive in the majors, but he could end up in a pen somewhere, or add another pitch to get by for a bit as a 5th SP on a bad team.

To me, he’ll be that fill in for 2 starts while Santana is on the DL dealing with tennis elbow.

I wouldn’t say he’s dominant in AAA, but it’s a level where he can have success. I don’t think he’s a guy you want in your rotation for an extended period of time, but now that he’s off the 40, the Mets can keep him stashed in AAA until they need him, which is hopefully never. Even with Gee and Santana hurt, they’re no where close to going back to Schwinden. If they needed another starter right now they’d probably go with McHugh or Mejia before Schwinden.

That would be finer than hitting a deer with your truck right in front of a butchers shop. or so they say.

Just trying to blend in so I don’t get shot. I do still have all my teeth. I swear I do.

or more likely, assuming (a long shot) Havens is still around, let them fight for the job in ST. then either trade Murphy, or even better, make him a utility guy. He’ll get plenty of ABs and can be a good PH bat off the bench.

Are you referring to his baseball prowess? :-)
