Mets sweat one out over Braves 6-5: miss u GKR

 Box Score

The Mets won by a score of 6-5 tonight over the Braves.

Jon Niese pitched excellently in this one, going 8 innings, allowing 1 run and posting a K/BB of 6/2. He showed some late-season durability that has been rare to this point in his career, and hopefully this is a sign of better conditioning as he gets older. For what it is worth he has pitched 6 innings in his last 13 starts. Real useful.

The offense gave him more than enough support in this one, and it came from all different parts of the line-up. Everyone in the line-up reached base tonight with the exception of Daniel Murphy. Jordany Valdespin hit a HR to right field tonight (his 8th), and that was coupled with RBIs from Tejada, Wright, Torres, and Davis.

The first 8 innings made it seems like one of those easy to watch games, as the Mets seemed to be in control the entire time. The only stressful moment was a HR by Freddie Freeman, which was a reminder that Niese’s biggest weakness is the long ball. I also believe that we can safely induct him into the Mets troll Hall-of-Fame, congrats!

Bad bullpen was bad though, as they would allow 4 runs in the 9th, and the tying run to third and the go-ahead run to second with two outs. The culprits were Josh Edgin and Frank Francisco. Jon Rauch would come in and

Here are some of my assorted notes from the game.

  • Is it just me, or does Terry run every time he has a runner that can? Teams way as well sit there and throw over until they have no lead, because Torres and Valdespin are going when on first.
  • I would have liked to see Niese finish this one, but I also like to complain. Take this as you will…
  • That ump would not call a strike in the 9th, what was his problem?

    Nice recap, Spencer.

Great game by Niese. Good effort by the offense.
Buy holy-mother-of-god, this BP will one day kill me.

I just don’t understand the logic of bringing in the only lefty to finish the 9th with a 5 run lead. He’s gonna be overused just by virtue of being the only lefty right now. He didn’t want to bring in FF? Fine, should have went with Rauch to start with, or Parnell. IMO, that was a poor decision.

But….Edgin couldn’t close the door and FF was worse.
Thank god for Ike’s defense there on that last out……

I assume it was based on having a couple of lefties (Freeman) up that inning.

but mostly, Terry seems to have a lot of brain farts late in the game….

but, it was nice to see Freddy drilled like that!

Let’s see, off day today. And Terry said Johan will be making his next start Friday. So that means they are staying on rotation, with everyone getting an extra day of rest this week.

That means I will see Neise next Saturday when I go to the Nats game (seeing the Mets live for the first time this year no Saturday!)

was hoping to get Harvey just to see what the hype is about. But at least it is better than Young or Hefner!

      Lucky you.

Just an FYI: SNY is broadcasting the AAA game tonight. I believe Familia is on the mound.
