This Week in Fantasy

As always, “This Week in Fantasy” is brought to you by the the Miss Real Dirty Mets Pinky and Inky.

Standings:

OK 3 scoring weeks left and this is how the playoff hunt currently shakes out.

Clinched: “Snukes” and “Team Real”

Clinching barring a horrible collapse: “Texas I’m Stuck In”

That leaves one more spot with four teams in the hunt. “Dickey’s Disciples” has a record of 9-8 while “Pepsi Porch Tattooers”, “Reconsider Baby” and “Shockers” are at 8-9. Here are their rosters, place your bets below.

For these teams, if there was ever a time to stream pitchers to try and get some extra points, now is the time. Just don’t pick up a pitcher that wants to give you negative points!

Looks to me Shockers gave up, he is starting the all DL team… I am torn between Reconsider and Disciples. I think Reconsider has the pitching edge while Disciples has the offensive edge. I’ll say Disciples seeing they already have a one game lead.

I’m leaning Pepsi over Reconsider. Considering Stras will be shut down, that will hurt.

Now the Disciples have Mike Trout, so that should just clinch it for them anyway…

why the hell don’t the Mets ever get a rookie to come up and do what he is doing? About the only one I can remember is Wright, and that was a long time ago.

and he was not a top 3 draft pick or anything. Also a local kid to me (millville), and I know he was good, but even when drafted I don’t think anyone saw close to this coming out of trout.

          Hey we got Baxter.

Well, I’d have to say Wright, Straw, Gooden, Jeffries, Reyes, and Kazmir would fit the bill. Maybe even Hundley(?). You can’t expect that to happen on a yearly basis, though it would be nice.

          1. Stickguy

I should have put Straw in there as the last one before DW. Gee, 2 in a 1/4 century!

I was also just thinking about position guys. Reyes did not do anything close to this (he was kind of weak the first few eyars), nor did Jeffries.

but mostly, I just felt like complaining!

I hear you. Yeah, it is completely frustrating on that front. Granted, I do like that there seems to be a steady stream of pitching in the minors, the lack of position players is a bummer. Generally, if Bay had been what he was supposed to be, you can struggle through another schlep or 2 in the OF. It’s getting harder to find decent position players that aren’t in their thirties, starting to decline and want 4 to 5 to 6 year contracts…

It may well take trading Wrght and Dickey to bring in some Young and decent position players at C, 3B and OF, as well as a pitching prospect or 2. Though every time I read someone post that thought, Grave’s articles on trading superstars for prospects comes jumping to my mind.

And if I could trade Dickey for 2 prospects (1 position, 1 pitcher) that were blue chippers, i probably would, but he’s such an odd character it’s tough to gauge what he’d bring back. Fairly underpriced, upper 30′s, pitching like a Cy Young, is this a fluke, how long can he keep this up, etc. etc. etc. If he could be traded and wright kept, with Niese, Harvey, Gee and hopefully Wheeler on the way, I’d be OK with that. I’d prefer to keep both Wright and Dickey, but would choose Wright over Dickey 8 times a week.

dickey has actually pitched very ell for the last 3 years now. He just has more wins to show for it this season.

I think he would bring back quite a bit, and if they did get a solid offer (top catching guy ready for the majors, plus an OF?) I would certainly consider moving him.

It’s going to be Pepsi. Particularly if Ike Davis aptly tattoo’s the damn thing once or twice.

OT but this is the latest post:

Oh boy…..The FO better get busy if we have any shot at keeping Wright.

    1. NJstuckinTX

He’ll either be extended in the offseason or traded. No way he is kept and moved at the deadline and I doubt they’ll hold onto him for only 1 compensation pick.

      1. Stickguy

I agree. IMO they need to move him this off season, to make a clean break of things, and for a better return (due to compensation rules). Only, of course, after making there best offer to try and keep him.

I know Spencer says trade him, purely from an analytically standpoint (decline numbers), but if they only have to guarantee up to about 35, taking all the factors (off field too) into consideration, they should just “overpay” him. In quotes, because I mean market value, which is likely going to be more than he actually gives you. Just as long as it is not Bay level less!

Now, I might change my mind if some team (and I don’t think this is going to happen) just tries to blow the Mets away with a trade offer.

And if they do trade him, they need some solid position player prospects back.

        1. NJstuckinTX

I would think that return would have to be 2 top 50 type players and probably 2 other ones as well. I’d have to look up what Arizona got in return for Trading Haren (both for acquiring him and when they shipped him off to LAA) and think you would need to expect something similar in return.

Wow, his quotes in that article are pretty telling. As expected, he actually wants to win. He also seems to realize that ain’t happening in Flushing. He’s as good as gone, and we all know it. Just gotta hope Sandy gets a good haul for him. This team has a ton of offensive holes to fill and very little of real value coming up through the system. Gotta replenish that.

      1. Stickguy

oh, that is straight out of the baseball cliche book. There are also no guarantees for the future, so at most it was a “message” that he wants to see them making forward progress. Or cutting Bay, which is the same thing.

        1. darknova306

We all know Wright wants to win, and this next contract will present the best opportunity for him to position himself to make it happen. There are plenty of places out there where winning is more likely than with the Mets. If he stays with this trainwreck, I have no sympathy for him.

      2. srt

I want to keep Wright even more than I wanted to keep Reyes.

if they let him walk….they might as well brick up Citi. It’ll be a ghost town.

I think they’re gonna have a hard time spinning a trade too, but depending on the pieces they get back, might be a little more sell-able.

        1. darknova306

With or without Wright, the only way Citi has fans in it next season is when Harvey (and possibly Dickey) is on the mound. Unless they fix all the gaping holes in the bullpen, outfield, infield, etc, but we know that’s not happening.

          1. srt

Yeah, I don’t expect 2013 to be much better than 2012.

2014 – with Bay and Johan gone – will be a different story. At least I hope it will.

          2. darknova306

The story will be the Wilpons paying off lots more debt with the freed up money.
