This is pretty much a depth move for this season and he is a free agent next year. I guess anything is better than Nickeas & Johnson?

a little pointless just for this season, so maybe they are looking at it as a test drive, to see if they want to keep him around for next year?

That would be my guess. They really need to do something about the catcher position in the off season, because I just don’t ever see Josh Thole being the #1 catcher on a team competing for a playoff spot.

unfortunately when the team is unwilling to spend money and there are no prospects on the horizon, Thole will continue to be the starting catcher.

Maybe that player to be named later is Jason Bay!

For his career he has a pronounced l/r split: .270 .364 .530 v. lefties. But this year he is about the same against both sides but slugging .500 v. lefties.

On a side note: The Red Sox are such a mess…

Unless much of this is overblown and exaggerated, I don’t know how you begin to fix that.

either a major overhaul of the roster, or let the inmates run the asylum and fire the manager. Guess which happens more often?
and if they run a 2nd manager out of town in 2 years, might as well not appoint one and let Pedroia or some player do the job, since a new guy will have zippo authority.

that was funny. I honestly had not heard about any of that.
but, when high paid teams lose, scapegoats are found. And it is easier to point to the manager, not the 25 guys on the field not getting the job done.
do they honestly think if Valentine was more touchy feely, or had a different personality, the team would be winning more?
this is basically the same bunch that got Theo run out of town, and threw tito totally under the bus (beer and chicken wings!). so the team management went for a disciplinarian type to change the culture. Can you blame them?

And none of this is any different than us 9-5 peons in the middle class workforce.
How many times has a new manager or management come in and employees immediately had a problem with them? Plenty in my working career.
Only difference is, none of us were getting paid multi millions of dollars to work there…..LOL.

Big time, hazmet…..
I work for DOD where the biggest cuts are going to hit.
I’ve got 18 months to go until full vested retirement. Crossing my fingers I can make it……

I’m not sure the value Shoppach brings, but I’m glad that they made a necessary move.

I’m thinking they want to get a look see – maybe he pairs up well with a platoon with Thole. Get a look at how he calls a game, handles the pitchers, etc.
If they like what they see, they’ve got first dibs on offering an extension, before the WS ends.
