Just imagine how bad their record would be if RA wasn’t having a career year.

Hey Nova it’s not so far fetched. Coming into today the Rockies in the NL are 3rd in Runs (99) for the month of August, 3rd in RBI’s (93) for the month of August, 2nd in SLG(.442) for the month of August and 1st in BA (.303) and OBP (.356) for the month of August.

In this series the Mets starting pitching has been superb. But it appears that the rest of the team is mailing it in. TC was credited with doing an outstanding job at the beginning of the season in motivating this team to overachieve but it falls on deaf ears when the team loses faith in itself. So overall I would have to rate TC’s job performance as a manager as average. Over an entire season the team will play to its talent level with TC at the helm. He is the perfect care taker manager for this team. I wouldn’t praise him or blame him but I would commend him for keeping his wits about him.

Take away Wright and Dickey from the first half and this team was never in contention from the start. That’s not on the manager, that’s on the players having career year performances. This team is also hideously flawed, so the demoralizing failure in the second half is also not on him, it’s on the team’s lack of real talent (and some injuries). Basically, this team’s not very good, but they rode some nice streaks to trick us into thinking otherwise.

TC had accolades heaped upon him by the fan base during the 1st half. If you give him credit for the 1st half then he must accept some of the blame for the 2nd half. Personally I think he’s an average manager and when or if this team gets some talent I hope they will appoint someone a little more astute in game management.
Your argument could be made for Art Howe since if you look at his Oakland years some of his teams had some excellent records.

I don’t really buy the “mailing it in ” excuse for not scoring. More like a lack of talent, with the few guys that can hit mired in slumps. Even this series, they have managed to stay close and get lots of guys on in the last couple of innings, just can’t push them home.
Besides, these guys have money and/or jobs on the line. Getting a bigger (or next) contract or staying out of the minors is a powerful incentive to still try and produce, even if the team is out of the running. Call it padding their stats in garbage time if you want, but playets do it.
2nd nature to try and get a hit.

Throwing to the wrong base and lack of attentiveness are signs of mailing it in. You can’t ascribe everything to stupidity and lack of talent. If you give this team a pass then you similarly have to give previous teams, managed by JM, a pass. Some of these things go beyond slumps or lack of talent. I don’t know if you have ever managed people but there are times when people just go through the motions at their job even if they know it can lead to dismissal (unless you belong to a public union because then you can’t be fired, see NYC teacher’s rubber rooms).

Back injury for Johan… it’ll be interesting to see how he progresses in the offseason. I’m very weary of back injuries for a pitcher…

I’m not really convinced yet he’s got a back injury.
I’ll bet if you MRI’d all over the age of 30, it’s going to show something.
I believe he’s got some inflammation. He’s got a stiff/sore back. He’s been pitching since Dec. and he’s probably been tinkering with his delivery a bit to compensate for the fatigue and maybe the sore ankle.
Back might be fine next season. It’s the stamina of that shoulder I’m kind of concerned about.

Can’t blame you, Mr. NJ.
Only high spot in last night’s game of course was Matt Harvey.
We’ve reached a low water mark. When your starting pitcher is the only batter in the line-up to get more than 1 hit, you’ve really reached rock bottom. Not much more we can say here about this offense.

MF, as all good met fans know, rock bottom is never reached, only chased.

Good point.
I guess it just feels like rock bottom.

If they gave out trophies for the best comment of the year this would win hands down.
