All six affiliates were in action last night, and two of them had a double-header scheduled, so there was a lot going on down on the farm last night.
Scranton W/B 2, Buffalo 1 (12 innings)
Jenrry Mejia had another good start, allowing just 1 run while striking out 6 and walking 1 over 6 innings. After that the bullpen held until the 12th inning when Fernando Cabrera gave up the game-winning run. Lucas Duda and Josh Satin had 2 hits each, but other than that the Bisons offense was stagnant. Ryoto Igarashi got the win for the Yankees.
Binghamton 6, New Hampshire 3
Mark Cohoon continues to pitch well for the B-Mets, earning his 8th win of the season. Cohoon scattered 11 hits while giving up 3 runs, but he struck out 7 in 7 innings of work. Brad Holt and Andrew Carpenter each through a hitless inning of relief; Holt’s ERA has dipped below 3. Dustin Martin and Allan Dykstra both homered. Wilmer Flores and Francisco Pena each had a double. Reese Havens was 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.
Jupiter 7, St. Lucie 5 (Game 1, 9 innings, which is 2 extra in a double-header)
After back-to-back great starts Erik Goeddel took a half step back, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) and lasting just 4.2 innings. The Lucies came back to tie, but Adam Kolarek allowed 2 runs in the 9th and took the loss. Darrell Ceciliani returned from the DL after nearly 2 months away, going 3 for 4 as the DH. When Ceciliani has been on the field this year he has played very well. T.J. Rivera also had 3 hits, including a double, as well as 2 RBI’s. Blake Forsythe tripled and homered. Cesar Puello was 2 for 4 with a double. Alonzo Harris and Danny Muno both doubled as well.
Game 2 was cancelled; they’ll try to play two again tomorrow.
Asheville 8, Savannah 7
The Gnats put up a 4-spot in the 1st inning, but after Domingo Tapia cruised through the first 2 innings the wheels came off in a 5-run 3rd inning. Tapia finished 4 innings, giving up 7 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits, but with no walks and 5 strikeouts. It’s a shame Tapia struggled because the Gnats actually had a good night at the plate. Yucarybert De La Cruz was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored. Greg Pron had 2 hits with 3 RBI’s. Charley Thurber had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.
Brooklyn 4, Tri-City 1
More strong pitching from the Cyclones as Luis Cessa gave up 1 run over 7 innings, allowing just 6 hits and no walks. Matt Bowman struck out 4 in 2 scoreless innings to earn his 3rd save of the season. Brandon Nimmo struck out 3 times, going 1 for 5 with a run scored. Phillip Evans was 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.
Kingsport 2, Burlington 0 (Game 1, 7 innings)
Chris Flexen (14th round pick) got his first professional win after pitching 6 scoreless innings, giving up just 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. Flexen and a lot of other pitchers would ordinarily be in the GCL this year, but instead have gone to Kingsport, where they have struggled. Gavin Cecchini was 2 for 4 with an RBI, as he continues to DH coming off an injury. Maikis De La Cruz and Anthony Chavez both added a double.
Burlington 5, Kingsport 1 (Game 2, 7 innings)
More questionable pitching from the K-Mets in game 2, as Alberto Baldonado let up 4 runs in 3 innings. Robert Gseilman did strike out 4 in 3 innings of relief while giving up an unearned run. Jeyckol De Leon and Jorge Rivero both doubled, but the K-Mets had just 4 total hits, equaling the number of errors they committed in a 7-inning game.

Strong outing for Mejia, good to see.
Flores…reading his lone double was the 2 out variety in the 5th to drive in the go ahead run. ‘Clutch’?

I assume you will be seeing Mejia for a few September starts with the Mets. Buffalo season is over soon anyway.
Just please, don’t put him in the pen!

My thinking is that you give Mejia a few ML starts in September. If things go well you put him in the mix with the rest of the starters next spring. If he struggles some, then you tell him that he’s going to the bullpen next spring where he’ll stay, so he can mentally prepare for the move during the off season, instead of not being sure what his role is and being jerked around.
