After Collin McHugh delivered a fantastic pitching performance for the big league club, the farmhands provided 3 more good outings by Logan Verrett, Gabriel Ynoa, and Miller Diaz. Of course, in an attempt to even things out Cory Mazzoni and Angel Cuan got bombed. Let’s take a look:
Scranton W/B 4, Buffalo 3 (11 innings)
Armando Rodriguez got the promotion and the spot start in place of Collin McHugh. Rodriguez lasted 4.1 innings, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits. C.J. Nitkowski gave up the winning run in the 11th. Lucas Duda was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. Matt Tuiasosopo, Matt Den Dekker, and Lucas May all had 2 hits each. The starting pitcher for the Yankees was former Mets LOOGY Mike O’Connor.
Portland 14, Binghamton 9
Cory Mazzoni got bounced after giving up 7 runs in 3 innings. Three of the four relievers that followed also gave up multiple runs. Ryan Fraser managed to pitch a scoreless inning. Wilmer Flores was 3 for 4 with a double, homer, and 2 RBI’s. Wilfredo Tovar was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Juan Lagares, Jefry Marte, and Dustin Martin all had 2 hits each.
Jupiter 9, St. Lucie 0 (Game 1, 7 innings)
Angel Cuan didn’t make it out of the first inning, letting up 4 runs. Jack Leathersich managed to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out 3. In the 7th inning, Hamilton Bennett gave up 5 unearned runs on 6 hits after a Daniel Muno throwing error. Offensively, the Lucies had just 4 singles.
St. Lucie 8, Jupier 1 (Game 2, 7 innings)
Logan Verrett pitched all 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. After 5 starts for St. Lucie, Verrett is rocking a 2.27 ERA. Aderlin Rodriguez was 3 for 3 with 2 homers, giving him 8 since his promotion to St. Lucie and 24 total on the season. Travis Taijeron hit a 3-run homer and Cesar Puello had a solo shot. Alonzo Harris was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Harris has followed up a July in which he hit .292 by hitting .364 thus far in August.
Savannah was rained out. They’ll play two on Saturday.
Tri-City 4, Brooklyn 3 (11 innings)
Gabriel Ynoa lasted 6.2 innings, giving up just 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 5. John Mincone blew the save in the 9th and then Beck Wheeler gave up 2 runs in the 11th and took the loss. At the plate, Nelfi Zapata was 3 for 5 to raise his average to .169. Alex Sanchez had 2 hits. Brandon Nimmo and Phillip Evans were both 1 for 5 with a pair of strikeouts; Nimmo did drive in 2 runs.
Kingsport 7, Bluefield 1
Miller Diaz gave up just 2 hits in 6 scoreless innings of work, while striking out 6 and walking none. Akeel Morris got his second save after giving up just 1 run in 3 innings of work, striking out 6. Morris has lowered his ERA to 7.98 (which is actually quite the accomplishment considering how he started the season). Gavin Cecchini was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Jeyckol De Leon also had 3 hits. Maikis De La Cruz was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI.

I like Flores. I like him even better if he can stick at 2B. Though entirely possible he is the starting 3B in 2014. Sorry SRT!

How far away is Flores, really? next September as a call up? Moves up to AAA and is a possible May/June call up? Could theoretically make the team out of ST?

If he is ready to field a position (and after this year, I want that to be more of a priority!) he could be closer than many people think. He is really hitting well now in AA, and it seems that his raw skills (quick swing, makes contact) should translate well to a promotion (in that he is not as likely as say Den Dekker to get exposed).
out of ST would be a shock. September call up seems like almost a worst case.
so, a big spring, then 2 months or so in AAA playing a position (hopefully 1) and I could see him coming up mid-season.
just such a huge question, what position does he play?

If I had to take a stab, let him roll with 2B. I think the transition to say, 3B or 1B would be easier and gives you flexibility should Wright or Murph get traded.

I agree about moving him to the corners being easier, especially since he seems comfortable at 3b already.
and of course, since I am happy to replace Murphy (and in your scenario, you seem to have him replacing Murphy, then being available to replace Murphy again).
although maybe you mean roll with 2B this year, in which case, never mind!

Well, it was either taking Murph’s spot at 2B (assuming he is traded), or if they traded Wright (or even Ike), I’d figure that if Murph was still around, he’d be the guy sliding over to that corner position. Nothing like having no power at the corners!

Well, he’s on the 40-man so he could get called up this September, but I don’t see that happening. Unless DW is somehow out of the picture, I can’t see him making the team out of ST, b/c they’re not going to bring him off the bench. Next year is definitely the year he’ll make his big league debut, at least in September, but he could certainly happen earlier, there’s just too many variables to know when. He could force his way up with performance, but there would need to be a position somewhere that he could play everyday, cause there’s no reason to bring a 21 year old to the big leagues just to pinch hit 4 or 5 times a week.
