Sandy Alderson spoke on WFAN two days ago and whether he was there to calm the Met Faithful or sell tickets for next year, one thing was for certain-he spoke things that might get a Met fan excited.
Or angry.
Depending on what transpires months from today.
Now personally, I like some of the things that Sandy said.
“We need an infusion of players, productive players.”
You see, I interpret that as saying “We are going to bring in some good, qualified outfielders/catchers”
Right?
Or how about this one…that they will not be “complacent over the course of the Offseasn….”
And finally…..”Maybe it’s time to make some moves”
Now honestly, these are all the right things to say. As a Met fan, it gives me hope that there is some silver lining in this mess of 2012…But I have to remind myself of a couple of things before I start saving money for playoff tickets.
1. And Sandy said this…he is unsure of his budget for next year.
2. There can always be that excuse of ….”That player was not a good fit” or “the team in question wanted too much in return for such and such a player”
3. Other Omar Minaya type excuses of why the Mets just missed out on a great player.
So a word of warning Sandy as you make your plans. Your boss may make a liar out of you. And also remember that Met fans right now are desperate for something positive, saying those things the other day might just come back to haunt you very soon.
We all remember.

Sandy is in the perfect situation though. He is a temporary guy, and has no intentions (or desires) to be around long. So frankly, he could not care shit 1 what anyone (including the fans) think about him.
He pretty much has free reign to do or say anything he wants at this point.

on the lighter side, saw this come across my Email. There are a few dickey jokes in there…
Here are the top nine comments made by NBC sports commentators during the Summer Olympics that they would like to take back:
1. Weightlifting commentator: “This is Gregoriava from Bulgaria. I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.”
2. Dressage commentator: “This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.”
3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: “I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.”
4. Boxing Analyst: “Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.”
5. Softball announcer: “If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.”
6. Basketball analyst: “He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn’t like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces.”
7. At the rowing medal ceremony: “Ah, isn’t that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew.”
8. Soccer commentator: “Julian Dicks is everywhere. It’s like they’ve got eleven Dicks on the field.”
9. Tennis commentator: “One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them…Oh my God, what have I just said?”

I viewed that as saying, if we can’t resign Wright, he’s gone this offseason, And quite possible he’ll be gone, anyway. Between him, RA and possibly Murph, that’s about all they have that will bring back an “infusion” of players.

Neise too, but I really can’t see the team trading him, since he is 25 and they just signed him to a reasonable LT deal.

It’s for that reason I don’t consider him tradeable. There is a line where young, decent and controllable (read: cheap & controllable) need to be held. If he was 27… different story.

I think we agree. he is very tradeable, and would bring back an infusion of talent, he should just not be/won’t be traded.

You know it’s bad when even Cerrone starts piling on. And as much as I dislike Fatcessa his rant was spot on. The team is awful. He really channeled his inner mad-dog on that rant.
Starting to listen to the Sandy cessa interview now. Sounds like he still needs “clarification” on payroll LOL.
Sandy: Hey Jeffy were still broke right? No additions to payroll right?
Jeff: Sandy leave me alone I’m picking out some new golf clubs, yea yea credit card maxed out.

what is the big mystery? of course they don’t know exactly what the payroll can be, until they get the final results from this year, see what season renewals look like, etc. No team really does yet, exactly.
but it seems clear (and they have pretty much said it) that it won’t be going up noticeably (a few mill maybe, but not some huge amount). So I guess the only real question is, are you going to chop it another 10-20%, and I am pretty sure they have indicated that was not in the cards.
so Payroll will be about the same, right around 100mill, in the top 1/2 of all of MLB, and not vintage Rays or Pirates territory.
Just because Sandy is not spending much new money, does not mean he is not spending money (as I like to say, Omar just pre-spent this years payroll for him)

Yea I am with you. It’s not even about Payroll its more of these bad contracts that are just slowing everything down. How much would Cleveland love a 100m payroll right now.
The team is just top to bottom bad and 500m wouldn’t fix it right away. Sandy in his interview used a analogy that for the last couple years it was about “home buying” and trying to find a place that is the right fit and now “it is probably time to buy the house”. Proof will be in the pudding. They need to have a good off-season and I think these guys are smart enough to understand the writing is on the wall.

Got thought the Sandy Fatcessa interview and I picked up these main points.
They don’t feel like they can just dump Bay at this point but Duda is more of a fit in LF at this point. This team needs a infusion of power and talent and needs to improve not incrementally but more immediately. Bay and Santana’s contract is screwing everything up and he really doesn’t know what he can do.

having 40% of your payroll (actually, 45% since Pelf counts too) as completely dead weight will drag down any team. They really are trying to compete with~55mill in payroll. When you had a suckadelic farm system too, not a good combination.
But, they were also let down by guys they were counting on, but who easily could rebound next year.
Just say that Ike and Duda were sophomore slumps, compounded by injury rust (ike) and worry about RF (Duda). and that a winter to work/rest/recharge will get them back on track. And that Duda is just way more comfortable in LF. etc.
well, if those 2 guys go from below expectations, to at or above, suddenly the middle of the order (and the power deficit) is much less of an issue.
the key then to the lineup would be adding a productive RH bat for RF. That can be done. CF then will likely be a more defensive minded player? Oh, and shoppach has to be a useful RH hitting catcher… Unless they can replace Thole.
Just rambling to point out that there is some way under utilized (or performaing talent) already on board, and a few get acquisitions (that don’t have to be superstars) can actually get the offense (and ideally defense at the same time!) at least up to adequate.
The pen, we can tackle that another day…

I can’t listen to Francesa so I’ll take y’alls word for what was said.
I don’t get the Bay issue. I can see holding onto him rest of this season. We’re not going anywhere, anyway.
But come next season I don’t see the problem with cutting him. We cut Castillo and Perez both in same ST. Their salaries almost equal Bay’s.
Yeah…they’re not gonna spend 18 MIL to replace one LF – I get that. But it can be filled internally or on the cheap I suppose. As much as I’d like to see a more improved OF next year rather than a 6 man platoon, I want to see Bay out there even less….

I just don’t want the distraction or the story anymore with Bay. He’s batting under 150 now, he is done. And if he went to another team and had a resurgence then good for him I still would have no regrets. It’s just not happening here and it’s time to move on.

Is it really a distraction? The whole team stinks. it’s a grin and bear it type situation at this point. And once Sept 1 comes and the benches expand, Duda comes up, just shove him in LF and let Bay watch the rest of the games.
And I’m guessing he does get cut in ST, or traded for a Fringe AAAA OF and Mets pick up 95% of his salary. Heck, cutting him and someone else picking him up for 400K is basically like the Mets covering 97.5% of his salary.

8/24/2012-11:30am at 11:30 am (UTC -4)
yeah, it should work out that bay just disappears in September. hell, they may just send him home.
And I suspect that if they can’t move him prior, he will just be released in ST, when the 40/25 man rosters have to be set.
I figured he would not be cut before next year, because my understanding is that they immediately have to pay all the rest of the contract out. So they would rather keep him until the spring, than come up with another $20mill right now to pay him to leave.
as long as he is not on the field, I do not care.

Agree with all of you on this.
If there’s one thing we should be positive of, it’s Bay should not be on this team next season.
As Salty said, if he goes to another team and revives himself on our dime, so be it. I don’t have a problem with that.

What would really help out would be Ike and Duda living up to their fangirls’ hype and finally hit those 40 bombs each. Unfortunately, neither of them has a very good major league track record yet, so you can’t assume they’ll be middle of the order answers while building a team.

Here is a question now that we are past the Madoff saga does anyone expect the Wilpons to address the fans at the end of the season?

And say what? Are they going to laugh at all of us for still following this mess of a franchise?
