This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Free Falling” Edition 08-24-12

In the wake of the recent down turn of events with the Mets, I thought this was apropos.

And with that said…HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Back up catcher from ’78-’79, Butch Benton is 55 (1957).

The throw in for the Scott Kazmir to the Rays for Victor Zambrano trade, pitcher, Bartolome Fortunato is 38 (1974) .

The New York Mets signed free agent reserve catcher, Kelly Stinnett on August 24, 2006. This was Kelly’s second stint with the Mets, and was released after the season ended.

The song that Mo Vaughn thinks best describes the Mets at this moment of time is “MacArthur Park” – not because it describes a bad period in a persons life but because he is sad to see a perfectly good cake go to waste !!!

well, the longer this goes on, the larger the list of guys that won’t be back becomes.

Off the top of my head, just looking at the 25man (+ ML DL), at least as much as I can remember of it this early in the AM, you likely are seeing (or not seeing, after they are removed):

    Acosta
    Hefner
    Ramirez
    Rauch
    Torres
    Bay
    Pelf
    Hairston
    Spin
    Turner

that is about 40% of the roster, all likely gone (some are a lock). Plus others that could easily go, in Murphy, THole, Shoppach (not at all locked into them if a deal can be made).

No, not every one of those names can likely be moved, but it is not inconceivable. And of course, if the real napalm drops, Dickey and Wright.

about the only guys I would guarantee are back are Ike, Tejada, Baxter, Neise, Harvey, Snatana.

I wouldn’t be surprised is Rauch was brought back, as well as Shoppach, though he hasn’t shown me a great deal to warrant that. Hairston, I think, will not be back. i can see him getting a 2 year deal. If he was to come back, great, but he’s really a 4th OF/PH guy, so I’d almost prefer them go another direction. I think TRS has it right that they’ll non-tender Pelf and then re-sign him to a minor league deal. Does that mean he has to have a 40 man spot? I also think Ramirez will be back as well. For the rest… They don’t serve much purpose. Turner, goodbye. Acosta, ciao, Torres, buh-bye.

no, pelf in that case would not be on the 40 man. I consider that being lopped off anyway!

agreed though that not every one of these guys will go. Shoppach I do think comes back.

Ramirez, he could rebound, but I think they trim him to save money. Rauch I would not mind seeing back actually, but will he get a better deal?
