Last Night on the Farm – 8/25/12

This is pretty simple: if your city starts with a “B” you won last night, if it doesn’t you sucked at hitting and lost last night.  To be more specific, Darin Gorski and Hansel Robles excelled on the hill while Wilmer Flores and Darrell Ceciliani did good work with the bat.  Let’s read on:

Buffalo 5, Rochester 3

Chris Schwinden gave a nice effort, scattering 9 hits over 6.2 innings while giving up 3 runs (2 earned).  Fernando Cabrera notched his 22nd save of the year.  Zach Lutz, Matt Den Dekker, and Mike Nickeas all had 2 hits each.  Den Dekker is hitting a decent .244 in August, but he has a less decent .286 OBP and is slugging just .337 this month.  Val Pascucci hit his 16th homer, but will likely fall short of last year’s total of 21.

Binghamton 5, Portland 1

Darin Gorski looks to finish the season strong, going 7.2 innings, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 9.  Ryan Fraser, who is having a strong second half, got the final 4 outs.  Wilmer Flores continued his hot hitting by going 3 for 4 with a walk and 2 doubles.  Reese Havens was 1 for 5 with a homer (10th of the season) and 3 RBI’s.

Charlotte 2, St. Lucie 1 (12 innings)

Chase Huchingson threw 8 shutout innings, but couldn’t finish off the complete game and gave up the tying run in the top of the 9th.  Huchingson lasted 8.2 innings, allowing just 3 hits but only striking out 3.  Jeff Walters gave up the game-winning homer in the top of the 12th.  The Lucies had just 7 hits, all singles, 2 from T.J. Rivera and 3 from Darrell Ceciliani.  Cecilliani probably doesn’t have enough at bats to justify starting him in Binghamton next year, which is a shame because he has done nothing but hit when he’s been healthy this year.

Rome 2, Savannah 0 (Game 1, 7 innings)

The Gnats managed just 4 singles, giving Yohan Almonte the loss after giving up a 5th inning homer, which provided the only runs of the game.

Rome 4, Savannah 1

After 4 hits in game 1, the Gnats had just 3 hits in Game 2.  Cole Frenzel had 2 of the hits, including a double.  Alex Panteliodis struck out 8, but let in 4 runs in 5.2 innings.

Brooklyn 11, Staten Island 0

This was a good old-fashioned beat down of the Yankees.  Phillip Evans was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s.  Dimas Ponce had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.  Jeff Reynolds hit a 3-run homer.  Brandon Nimmo was 1 for 2 with a double and 3 walks.  On the mound, Hansel Robles did his part, throwing 7 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 8.  Logan Taylor and Tyler Vanderheiden each pitched a scoreless inning.

Bluefield 7, Kingsport 0

This game was vintage K-Mets: 3 hits and 5 errors.  Shortstop Anthony Chavez had 3 of the 5 errors.  Gavin Cecchini, who still isn’t back in the field, had 1 of the 3 hits.  Despite all the errors, 3 for the 5 runs John Gant gave up were earned.  Robert Whalen (12th round) and Brandon Welch (5th round) both made their professional debuts in relief.  Whalen threw a scoreless inning while Welch allowed a run on 2 hits.  Both were intriguing arms to me on draft day.

    Flores for 2B!

so, seems that I guessed right yesterday, and Spin was the guy sent down (though he will be back in a week when rosters expand and the AAA season is over).

still a bit odd why they waited this long, but not another week, to do it.

unless there is something brewing with a waiver trade?

It makes perfect sense I guess to send Spin down, since it seems they should be planning on having Duda out in LF every day, it is just the timing that seems odd. Since it isn’t like they are getting guys on the 25 man so they will be eligible for the post-season!

The timing is odd, why not bring him up at the beginning of the series and play him Friday night? I can’t imagine a waiver trade at this point. There’s nothing you can do now that you can’t do in the off season.

Spin won’t be eligible to come back for 10 days, which is either 4 or 5 Sep.

      1. Stick

I assumed that did not apply once we hit 9/1, but as always, there is a tiny chance I am wrong!

You could be right, I really don’t know the rule once minor league season ends.

        2. Bryan

He can’t come up again for 10 days or until the minor league season ends. So since he was optioned to Buffalo, he can’t come back until the day after Buffalo’s last game.

    Go Go Gorski!!!

So Hansel Robles…..is he starting to turn heads down in Brooklyn?

    1. Bryan

A lot of pitchers are turning heads in Brooklyn. Robles is one, but he’s already 22 and under 6′ so his ceiling isn’t as great as the others but he throws hard and has the best numbers of anyone this year.

Luis Mateo is also 22, but he could be a fast riser next year, same for Rainey Lara, who is 21. They have the highest K rates.

Gabriel Ynoa and Luis Cessa are a little younger, but are tall and have great numbers in Brooklyn this year.

        Thanks.
Only one I recognize that you mentioned was Mateo and Ynoa.

Off Topic: Collin McHugh got jokes. :-D

Collin_McHugh (Prospect) The Dodgers picked up over $200 million in annual salaries yesterday, or as they call it in LA, a James Cameron movie.

farm related, but if whatever Murphy did to his shoulder is serious (and a pop in the shoulder certainly has a shot at being serious) and he is done for the year, this is my plan:

call up Havens, and let him play every day.

hey, it is a lost/rebuilding year. Spin is not an IF, and really hard to see him as a future at 2B. Turner and Cedeno are no-future bench guys.

Flores, too soon, and still learning the position.

so, what the hell. havens is on the 40 man, and they need to make a decision on him this off season. So, call him up, play him for a month, and see if he looks to have anything to offer.

if yes, they suddenly have some trade options. If no, a 40 man decision for the off season has been made.

    1. Bryan

If Murph is out for the year and there’s playing time available at second base it’d be silly not to bring up Havens and throw him in there a few times a week. I don’t know how prepared he would be to have success and I don’t know if he could do anything to avoid being removed from the 40 (which I kind of expect to happen this off season), but like you said there’s nothing to lose.

Backman in today’s postgame said Murphy was getting an MRI so Valdespin was on hold as far as possibly going back up with the Mets.

    1. NJstuckinTX

Isn’t Valdy not able to go backup for 10 days?

      1. Stick

he can if they put murphy on the DL. If they don’t have to DL him no need for a move.

interesting bit on MLBTR about the Dodgers.

they now have contract commitments for 2013 of 189mill. Not including arbitration eligible or tender guys. That is just the guaranteed deals.

    2014, a paltry 131mill. Then about 3-4 years of 88mill.

when they spend, they spend. But unless they manage to trade off some of those contracts in the off season, they are going to blow right past 200mill next year.

    1. NJstuckinTX

Ah, to have owners with money…

      1. Stick

not exactly. More like a team with enough attendance and a huge TV deal, combined with an apparent lack of team debt, to be able to run in the black with a 200mill payroll.

though it is possible they are just spending as an investment for the future, even if they are losing money this year.

the real question I have about the dodgers is, while they have seemingly shot the wad for the next couple of years, are the guys good enough to make it worthwhile? AGon certainly can rebound and be a big guy for them, but Crawford and beckett? Are they doing anything the next couple of years besides sucking down payroll, and taking up roster spots?

      2. gategem

A major advantage the Dodgers new owners posses (and correct me if I’m wrong) is that the Dodgers new owners and former owner Frank McCourt jointly own Chavez Ravine. However, the Mets potentially can be a very lucrative franchise to own. If you look at Major League Attendance figures for 2006, 2007 and 2008 you’ll see that the Dodgers and Mets jockeyed for the 2nd and 3rd spot behind the Yankees. In fact in 2008 the Mets drew over 4 million people so the attendance potential is there for the Mets. The Dodgers signed a lucrative TV contract with Fox Sports but again with a winning team the potential from SNY, because the Wilpons have a stake in the ownership, is greater than with Fox Sports.

        1. gategem

the word should be possess not posses as in they went that-a-way. :-)

        2. NJstuckinTX

i’m not sure it is physically possible to draw 4 million at Citi Field as it’s a smaller park. Can anyone check that for me?

          1. Stickguy

not even close. I thought the capacity was a ridiculous 38K, but maybe it is a little more. Record I think in the house is about 42K? and at 42K/game, you are looking at bout 3.4mill people. Not happening.

the mets most likely (and the business model was built on this) will never draw more than 3mill again.

          2. Stickguy

got ambitious and looked it up.

seating capacity is 42,000, but with SRO they can supposedly jam 45,000 in there.

          3. NJstuckinTX

So, standing room only, for 82 games gives you 3.69 Million.

          4. Stickguy

and it is impossible to conceive (for me) getting from where the mets are at now, to selling out every game, including the super expensive seats, like that. But, you never know.

even the old days at Shea with the big #s were skewed by the weekend and pennant race games where they jammed 55K+ in there, to offset some of the 30K weeknight in the spring games!
