Full slate and then some down on the farm, but the Cyclones are the only team to win – a win they sorely needed, and they had to work overtime to get it. The Lucies get swept in a doubleheader (as always, twin bills are seven inning affairs), and we say goodbye to the Kingsport Mets for the season. Fellas, it was….well, it was a season. Let’s take a look!
Rochester 10, Buffalo 4
Elvin Ramirez went 1.1 scoreless innings. That’s great. The bad news is that the Bisons used six pitchers and the other five all got touched up for at least one run. This one was relatively close until the Red Wings scored five in the ninth to put it away. Fred Lewis and Matt Tuiasasopo both connected for two run homers. Jordanny Valdespin is back in Buffalo, and back playing second. He was 0 for 4.
Reading 12, Binghamton 8
Not a good night to be a pitcher – on either team. The B-Mets actually put up a six spots in the top of the fourth to take a brief 6-2 lead. It was gone by the bottom of the inning and though Binghamton got it back the next frame, the Phillies scored all the rest of the runs for the game. Cory Mazzoni allowed six runs in 3.2 innings, Armando Rodriguez too the loss, giving up three in 2.1 innings (two of the three hits he gave up were homers, although he didn’t walk anyone and fanned four), and Brad Holt gave up three in the final two frames. Juan Lagares went 2 for 5 with a two run homer, Wilmer Flores (playing second) was 3 for 5 with two runs scored, and Jefry Marte was 1 for 3 with two RBI and a runs scored.
Jupiter 5, St. Lucie 4 (Game 1)
Adam Kolarek surrendered a leadoff single, then a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh to give the Hammerheads the victory, which is a shame because Erik Goeddel pitched well enough to win (5.1IP, 3R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 5K). Cory Vaughn was 1 for 3 with a three run homer (his 23rd of the season), and Cesar Puello was one for three with a solo shot.
Jupiter, St. Lucie 2 (Game 2)
The Hammerheads jumped on Angel Cuan for four runs in the first, knocking Angel out in just two thirds of an inning, and the Lucies never really recovered in the nightcap. Kyle Allen, Jack Leathersitch and John Church combined to shutout Jupiter the rest of the way, but the damage was done. Alonzo Harris and TJ Rivera were 2 for 4, while Danny Muno and Cory Vaughn both went 2 for three with a run scored.
Asheville 6, Savannah 5
The Sand Gnats scored three times in the top of the ninth, but Brian Harrison grounded out with the tying run on third as the rally fell just short. Domingo Tapia pitched well, but not great, in taking the loss (6.1IP 5R, 7H, 1HR, 0BB, 9K). Craig Hansen continues his rehab tour, now getting bumped up from Brooklyn. He walked two in a scoreless inning. Dustin Lawley was 2 for 4 with a solo homer.
Brooklyn 6, Aberdeen 3 (11 Innings)
Dimas Ponce (2 for 5, 3 RBI, 1 run scored) delivered a key two run double as the Cyclones posted three runs in the top of the eleventh to complete the two game sweep in Aberdeen. Luis Cessa had a perfect game going into the sixth, but the Iron Birds jumped on him for three runs to take a brief lead. Matt Bowman got the win with four shutout innings out of the pen. Jayce Boyd (2 for 5) had a solo homer for the second straight game. The Cyclones head to Hudson Valley to take on the first place Renegades, who hold a five game lead on Brooklyn with eight to play. The Cyclones still have a two game lead in the wild card standings over Batavia.
Pulaski 5, Kingsport 2
The K-Mets had a brief lead in this one, but the Mariners scored solo runs in five innings for what must have seemed like Chinese Water Torture as the Appalachian regular season comes to an end. Christian Chivilli took the loss in relief, but he pitched well enough to win (4IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 0K). Gavin Cecchini went 1 for 5 with a run scored. The Mets first round pick in this year’s draft finishes the season with a line of .246/.311/.330. Some K-Mets might get called up to Brooklyn for the stretch, and Gavin’s numbers strongly mirror those of Brooklyn shortstop Phillip Evans (.242/.324/.332) – though I’d love to get a firsthand look at him.

Very glad that the train wreck that is the K-Mets season is over. Amazingly they didn’t finish last in their division. Gavin should me heading to Brooklyn, although he still hasn’t played the field since his injury.

Curious to see what becomes of Juan Urbina. He started the year at Brooklyn out of the pen(BTW, bad sign), and didn’t pitch that poorly (ERA in the threes) – but not great either. He did tank at Kingsport, with an ERA over 5.

Tho he may also be injured – only threw 17 innings this year

It was an enormous step backwards. Not making the Brooklyn rotation was bad enough, but things got worse in Kingsport. I heard his velocity was way down and inconsistent. If he can’t rebound next year and make Savannah out of ST he’s done.

Flores…..does he start next year in Buffalo? (Or wherever that team winds up)

I wonder how much Hurricane Isaac is factoring into this decision. Gavin is from Lake Charles, LA., and with the storm stalling, he simply may have not been able to get home right now

Depends on what he does in the winter – I’m assuming he is going to play somewhere to get a better handle of where he fits defensively. My hunch right now is that he goes back to Binghamton to start the year – he only has a half a season under his belt AA. Also, if Las Vegas is the landing point for the Mets AAA team, you want a more accurate sense of what he can and cannot do. Las Vegas is a launching pad, so hitters’ numbers are usually better than the player is, and the inverse goes for pitchers.

But it might make sense to reduce the log jam of Flores, Havens and Marte all on the same team and Flores is probably the most ready to face better pitching.
However, an argument can be made that it is sh*t or get off the pot time for Havens and maybe it is time for him to go to AAA, face better pitching or maybe even artificially inflate his trade value with Las Vegas numbers.

very good chance Havens is not even with the club. Quite possibly they remove him from the 40 man, so he could get claimed as a rule 5 guy. That would help remove the logjam.

there’s quite a few candidates for removal from the 40 man. acosta, nickeas, rob johnson, etc. pelfrey, of course. can’t imagine there are so many guys they’ll need to add.

they have some. Dekker, wheeler, and I am sure there are others.

Den Dekker and Wheeler won’t be added to the 40 during the off season. Marte, Tovar, Gorski, ARod are the guys that need to be protected from rule 5.
