This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Michael Kay Was Wrong Again” Edition 09-02-12

Well here we are on September second and the Mets just won their 63rd game – solidifying yet another season where they will not lose over 100 games, but don’t tell Michael Kay from E.S.P.N Radio !!

Before the season started Mr. Kay- the afternoon drive  host for E.S.P.N, and resident Yankee broadcasting shill predicted that the Mets would lose at least 100 games. He saw that the Mets had a very quiet off season transaction wise so he figured that it would be a shoo-

in that this season’s team would rival the ’62 Mets in futility.

Well just like his prediction in ’10 that his Yankees would steamroll through the Texas Rangers in the playoffs he will be off by a pretty decent margin again. The Mets have 29 games remaining this season, and they will have to win 18 games to finish at .500.  It won’t be a easy task – but it is still not impossible. Even if the Mets go lets say 14-15 the rest of the way, their win total will match the 77-85 finish of last year.

Either way Kay has proven that prognosticating is not his strong suit, and he should just go back to carrying Derek Jeter’s pom poms.

I just hope that he lives up to the friendly wager that he made with fellow Mets blogger, Mike Silva, and wears a Mets jersey on his show.

Quit yer crying and put your clown britches on !

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

One of the legendary players from those early and awful Mets teams, first baseman Marv Throneberry would have been 78 today.(1933)

The New York Mets signed free agent back up shortstop, Tito Navarro on September 2, 1987. Navarro appeared in 12 games for the Mets that season and batted .059 with 1 R.B.I in 17 at bats !

Mo Vaughn is always used to being at or above 500. That’s the range his weight usually hovers around !!!

I’ve never actually heard Kay but I’ve read plenty of comments this week about his pre season predictions and that bet.

It will even be more satisfying if the Yankees collapse this month and lose the division.

I don’t think the team is that far away, certainly not the doom and gloom of some posters.

This year, they had a terrible stretch in July into August (which improved later in the month).

If they had played about the same in those 2 months as in the first 3 (about .544), right now they would be a WC team (same record as the Cards).

Heck, if they had played 1 game over .500 in july-august, they would be tied with the pirates coming into today, 1.5 out of the WC.

so in real terms, that is what you need to address to make the team a contender. And what killed them? They lost Gee and Santana (with a gap to Harvey). And the OF died off together. But the biggie, the closer went down.

And losing Franky hurt more than you realized. after his rough patch early, since mid-May, he had been money, and anchoring the pen. He went down in late June, and the team hit the skids. He was rusty when he came back in early August, and once he settled back in, the team started winning again.

Yes, they need to upgrade a few pen spots again, but the SP could actually be fine going into the off season. so if they can get something worked out for the OF (probably 2 guys), suddenly they should be competitive with the rest of the WC teams.

and really, with a decent stretch in September then can still hit .500, and the jump from that to WC contender is not all that big.

Getting back up to .500 will require them playing way better in September than any other month this year. Highly unrealistic. Even when the rotation was pitching way over their heads in June, they only went 2 over .500 for the month. Ain’t happening.

And they’ve won a bit recently because the starting pitching has been better and they’ve started to get some offense. I think you way overvalue the closer. They started losing because the rotation stopped pitching great and offense went MIA.

Please don’t burst his bubble. :-)

What killed them the most this season – IMO – was the poor BP first half of the season. How many leads did they give up? Somewhere around 18?

If only they were average or even better yet, but as strong as they’ve been the past couple of weeks.

Gee going down didn’t help either and the anemic offense in August as well.

Still played better than I expected overall, going in.

Could always be worse – could be the Marlins.

well, Kay is probably even more bummed out, since the Yanks lost to the Birds again today. Makes my heart bleed.

Don’t care what Yankee fans are telling themselves….Yankees are in trouble.

We might be out of it, but some of the Sep races are gonna be fun to follow. Maybe Francesa will get off the ‘Mets have quit on Terry and are packing it in’ nonsense and start the ‘Yankees will be fine’ fantasy.

      1. Stick

the Mets were never packing it in or quitting. They just had occasional talent issues (mostly hitting).

and yeah, the races could be fun, And I am real curious to know how the WC playin games are going to work. Could be a train wreck. Big problem with such a tight schedule at the end, and who the hell knows what is going to happen if they need tie breaker games to decide who even makes it into the WC!

wow, mets back tied for 3rd. I looked at scores and phils up big in the 9th, and Braves put up a 5 spot to win it off papelbon.

    breaks my heart there too!

Maybe the Braves are tired of hearing about their fold last year, and don’t want another one?

Sweep of the Marlins in their house – that was fun.

      And Papelbon – HAHAHAHA

I’ll bet the Phills and Marlins are so happy they spent that much money on a closer. And some Met fans complain about Frankie Frank’s contract….

Most of the better prognosticators projected the Mets to win 77 games so I’m not sure why Kay picked the Mets to lose 100 or more games. I saw those Mets teams that lost 100 games and on paper this team was significantly superior to those teams.
