And as annoyed as I was watching him call Torres out, it was nothing compared to after the game .
Crew chief said they all reviewed the replay and he made the right call, he didn’t touch the bag.
They’re either lying to save face or they really do believe he didn’t touch the bag. If it’s the latter Selig can just save any money instituting more instant replay. If they can’t get it right watching the replay, what’s the point?
he has to be BSing. At most, you say it was extremely close, judgement call, etc. to give a little wiggle room. But with the video shown all over, making a definitive statement like that is ridiculous.
besides, it should never have been in questions. that is the way they teach you to run the bases (cutting the corner like that), and there was no intent or advantage to what he did. The foot was right on the edge, there was no daylight, there was no play at 1st. 99 times out of a hundred, including if they showed that video in an umpire training class, they call him safe.
But,it was a real time call. The umps watch it once at full speed, and make a decision, without having HD slo mo replays to dissect. So that kind of call happens. But don’t have the arrogance to belittle the fans after teh fact too.
As a fan you get upset over it and continue to dwell on it until you kick your dog but for the Mets, in light of the overall 2012 “plan,” it’s a meaningless event. But for the teams fighting the Cardinals for a playoff spot it’s important. I’m amazed that umpires have problems with the simplest of calls these days. It appears they’re not concentrating on the task at hand. It’s great to have a strong union.

of course he did. and the Ump knows that he botched the play now. But, that is the “beauty” of baseball.
