Labor Day means the minor league season is all but over. Let’s take a look at how teams finished, as St. Lucie prepares for their playoff game tonight, and Brooklyn continues to fight for a spot in the preseason.
Buffalo’s game was rained out and will not be made up. In addition to Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia, Elvin Ramirez, and Jordany Valdespin (all of whom are on the 40-man roster), Justin Hampson and Fred Lewis will also get September promotions. Hampson had a brief stint with the Mets earlier this year, while Lewis will make an appearance in the big leagues for the 7th consecutive season after hitting .294/.379/.482 this year in Buffalo with 13 homeruns, 7 triples, and 26 doubles. This is both a reward for Lewis and a chance to prove that the Mets should bring him to spring training next year to compete for a spot in an outfield that has a lot of openings heading into next year.
Trenton 8, Binghamton 5
The B-Mets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Gonzalez Germen couldn’t hold onto it, giving up 5 runs over 5.2 innings. Brandon Moore didn’t help, giving up 3 more. Brad Holt pitched the final inning of the season for the B-Mets and ends the season with a 3.40 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 53 innings. Wilfredo Tovar was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s from the leadoff spot. Eric Campbell was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. Wilmer Flores was 0 for 5 and finishes the season with a line of .311/.361/.493 in 66 games at AA.
Kannapolis 5, Savannah 2
Domingo Tapia was bumped for John Gant, who gave up 5 runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings in his A-ball debut. He did strikeout 5 and walked none. A Greg Pron 2-run homer provided Savannah with their only runs of the game, as the Gnats’ season of anemic offense finally comes to an end with a lineup that included 6 players hitting below .225.
Brooklyn 4, Lowell 1
The Cyclones took a big step towards the playoffs with a win, as Luis Cessa pitched 8.2 innings, giving up just 1 run. Tyler Vanderheiden got the final out for his 12th save. Kevin Plawecki was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Phillip Evans, Juan Gamboa, and Jayce Boyd had 2 hits each. Elsewhere, Batavia finally lost after winning their last 9 games. That means the Cyclones are back on top of the wildcard by a game, with a magic number of 2 with 2 games to play.

Bryan, you did a tremendous job all season. And thanks to Peter as well, you guys bring so much awareness to the minors and it’s a big asset to the site. Some sites break it down to a post for each team and others get way too deep into the weeds with the analysis. You guys have a great balanced approach.
